For Fans of Filthy Female Otakus

the wallflower anime

The Wallflower

Four boys are offered to live in a fantastic mansion free of rent, but on one condition. They must make the girl of the house into a fine young lady. Enter Nakahara Sunako. She loves horror movies, death, and all things gloomy, stemming from a junior high school trauma. Blinded by all things beautiful, these four handsome men have their work cut out for them.

Sunako and Kae are similar in the respect that they are both below average looking girls that find themselves surrounded by gorgeous boys. While Kae is an actual otaku, Sunako fan girls over horror movies and macabre things. However, both shows are about rehabilitating a girl so that she is hot, but the guys end up falling in love with the girl inside.

tsukimi-kurashita-from-princess-jellyfish

Princess Jellyfish

Kurashita Tsukimi loves jellyfish, to the point of obsession. One day, when she sees a jellyfish being mistreated in a pet store, she tries to stick up for it, but her social awkwardness gets in the way. Thankfully, a sparklingly beautiful woman steps in and sparks the beginning of an unlikely friendship. While Tsukimi’s new friend charms her and her roommates, what they don’t know is that this princess is also a man.

Both Princess Jellyfish and Kiss Him, Not Me are about female otakus that prefer BL to actual love. While romance is a large part of the plot in Kiss Him, it is more of a subplot in Princess Jellyfish. It is also worth noting that while both series deal with personal appearance, Princess Jellyfish is more serious about it.

tomoko from watamote

WataMote

Tomoko Kuroki is well on her way to becoming a full hikkikomori. The only problem is, she has to get through high school first. However, her short lifetime of playing dating sims and watching anime hasn’t prepared her for the social interactions of real life. Still, Tomoko struggles through each day and the social interactions that they bring.

Both series tell the story of a female otaku and her… Passions. While WataMote is more about a girl and her passion for gal games, Kiss Him is the opposite with Kae being obsesses with Boy Love. While Kiss Him, Not Me is about the girl getting pretty and attracting a harem, WataMote has no such drastic changes.

For Fans of Reverse Harems

brothers conflict anime

Brothers Conflict

After being an only child her whole life, Emi Hinata’s life takes a dramatic turn when her father remarries and she suddenly has 13 new stepbrothers. Moving in with them, she is now surrounded by a whole lot of unique personalities.

Both shows are about average girls managing their ridiculously beautiful harems even if they don’t really deserve them. Of course, a number of unique personalities come together and clash to give the show some sort of substance.

amnesia anime

Amnesia

After fainting at work, a young lady awakens in the back room of the café she works at with no memory of her life or those around her. Two of her friends, whom she soon learns are named Shin and Toma, are called to help her get home safely. Once she is alone, she meets a spectral boy named Orion that only she can see and hear. He explains that she lost her memories because of his chance visit to her world, so he vows to help her remember who she is.

This might be what Kiss Him, Not Me might be if you took out the fujoshi and all the parody. Both Amnesia and Kiss Him are ultimately about a lot of different dudes all trying to date one girl, occasionally fighting it out over her.

first love monster anime

First Love Monster

As the daughter of a wealthy family, Nikaido Kaho is used to everyone being nice to her. However, on the way to move into her high school dorm, she is saved from almost getting hit by a truck by a handsome, but mean man. It is love at first sight, she even discovers he lives in the dorms too. Mustering her courage, she asks him out, to which he accepts. Only later does she discover that he is actually a 5th grader.

At first, First Love Monster presented the same kind of romance reverse harem parody that Kiss Him, Not Me presented, but later it actually got serious about the romance and weirded a lot of people out. Anyway, essentially the reverse harem in First Love Monster is a less mature harem while Kiss Him features mature boys dealing with an immature fan girl.

monthly girls nozaki-kun anime

Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun

Chiyo Sakura has fallen head over heels for the handsome and oblivious Umetarou Nozaki. However, when she confesses her love, he gives her an autograph. It turns out this stoic boy is actually a respected shoujo manga artist. After a series of misunderstandings, Chiyo winds up not as his girlfriend, but as his manga assistant.

Not only do you have a somewhat otaku-ish comedy in both series, but in Nozaki-Kun and Kiss Him you also have two leading ladies that obsess over something and are oblivious to what is happening around them. In Nozaki-kun, Chiyo is chasing after Nozaki even though a whole little harem of other boys are showing her affection. In Kiss Him, Not Me, Kae is a little less dense towards the affections coming at her, but she is still dead set on the yaoi of it all.

For Fans of Fringe Oddballs

The High School Life of a Fudanshi anime

The High School Life of a Fudanshi

Ryou is a complete normal high school boy, aside from his secret love, that is. Ryou is a fudanshi – a man who loves reading Boy’s Love manga. He only has one wish in life – to have friends that understand and share his secret love.

Fujoshi aren’t rare, but fudanshi are a little more of a treasure, and an anime about fudanshi? Well, that is the rarest treasure of all. If you like rabid fan boys and fans girls, then that is basically what these two series are about.

masamune's revenge anime

Masamune-kun’s Revenge

As a child, Masamune Makabe confessed his love to the wealthy and beautiful Aki Adagaki. However, she brutally rejected him and nicknamed him “Piggy” due to his chubby appearance. Fleeing to his grandfather’s home in the country, Masamune toiled endlessly to become fit. Once he became skinny and handsome, he returns to his old neighborhood in order to wreak vengeance on the girl that wronged him. With the help of Aki’s maid, Masamune sets out to make her fall in love with him so that he can be the one to break her heart.

The only thing that these two series have in common is a once-fat character gets skinny. However, while Masamune is narcissistic and out for revenge, Kae acts no different whether she is skinny or not. However, you do get to see that same shallow view come out in some of the guys that surround her.
