8 Spring 2017 Anime Series to Watch This Summer

No time to sit down and watch a new episode of anime each week? No problem, just save it all up for when you have a lonely weekend of anime binging ahead of you. However, the real problem with original series in a new anime season is that you don’t really know what is worth watching. If you are having difficulty sorting out what needs to be on your plan to watch this for the Spring 2017 anime season, look no further.

*Note: As always, these are original series, not second seasons, side stories, or re-imaginings. This means if you like Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Berserk, or Natsume’s Book of Friends, then by all means, go get current with them. However, if you want something new, this is for you.

Best Spring 2017 Anime

Eromanga-sensei

When their parents married, Masamune Izumi was thrilled to have a new adorable little sister. However, after their parents died, his little sister Sagiri became a shut-in. Now her only caretaker, Masamune supports them as a light novel author. However, one day he finds out that the mysterious illustrator Eromanga-sensei that draws the lewd covers for his light novel series is actually his reclusive sister.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – Well, it is made by the same creator of Oreimo, and not much has changed between that show and this one. The little sister, while not as feisty, is still just as cute, it has some great otaku characters, and if you don’t think about some of the specifics too much, it is a pleasure to watch.

Sakura Quest

sakura quest anime

As part of a nationwide movement during a Bubble economy period, one failing small town tries to reinvigorate itself with a tourism program. They hired five different girls to work at a tourism agency, this is the tale of the year’s time these five girls worked to try to breathe life into this little town.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – There is something to be admired for slice of life series that follow adults instead of high school girls. Sakura Quest is like that. Yes, these adult women look very cute, but it is still a slice of life that proves there is life beyond high school.

Grimoire of Zero

grimoire of zero anime

While witches exist, very little is understood about magic, so their kind is ostracized. Half-beast men like Yohei are also shunned, causing him to make his living as a mercenary and wish he was human. One day, he meets a witch called Zero who offers to grant the wish to turn him human, but only if he agrees to be her escort.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – Apparently you have to have “Zero” in your title these days to become a good fantasy anime series. However, while it somewhat echoes back to potions of Re:Zero, Grimoire of Zero is a nice adventure series that doesn’t get too convoluted or too boring.

The King’s Avatar

anime series like the king's avatar

In the multiplayer online game Glory, Ye Xiu was a legendary professional player. However, when he gets into an altercation with a team mate, he is kicked from the team and forced out of the pro circuit. Ye Xiu manages to find work as manager in an internet café. One day he notices that Glory has launched a new server, and throws himself into the fray once more. With ten years experience, he is set to play towards the summit.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – If you like MOBAs like League of Legends (the owner of which made this anime) or just video game anime series that are so popular now, The King’s Avatar, a series about a pro gamer, is worth a watch. If nothing else, it has the season’s best animation behind it. However, it is Chinese made and uses Chinese names and dubs, which can be a dealbreaker for purists.

WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world?

worldend anime

It has been five hundred years since humanity went extinct at the hands of the mysterious beasts that roam the land. Now the surviving races have retreated to floating islands in the sky out of reach of most of the beasts. However, there are ones nimble enough to put these people in danger. A small group of young girls, a race called the Leprechauns, are now raised as the only ones that can wield ancient weapons to fend off invasion by the beasts, but it often requires them to sacrifice themselves and they don’t often live to see adulthood. Enter Willem, the last surviving human woken from his slumber and sent to watch over these girls, still feeling the sting from the final battle where he lost everything five hundred years ago.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – Really, WorldEnd is worth watching for the cute girls. However, while the first episode makes it seems rather boring, the second does a good job turning up the intrigue of the story. As the series goes on, it finds a nice balance between the cute, funny, and action-packed moments that make it out to be one of the better fantasy shows of the season.

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor anime

Sistine is a dedicated student at the magical academy where she hones her skills. She eventually hopes to solve the great mystery of the Sky Castle, but when he teacher retires, the replacement, Glenn, turns out to be a lazy bastard. How is it this incompetent man was hand-picked as the best magician in the academy?

Why It Is Worth Watching? – Think of this series a bit like Mahou Sensei Negima come again. It’s about mages, but it is also comedic and you watch a straight-laced student try to understand her lazy, but powerful professor. The concept makes it seem rather lackluster, but they pull it off in a way that made you come back each week.

Re: Creators

recreators anime

What if our fictional characters were real? That is the question that Re:Creator asks as it follow a high school boy who creates drawings, but finds himself sucked into his favorite anime. From there on in, it explore the nature of consequences on if we should be responsible for our fantasies.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – I’ll be honest, Re:Creators has some frustrating moments were literally nothing happens. However, the concept overall is a deeply intriguing one. While it stumbles at times, it explores it in a way you want to see and never thought you would.

The Royal Tutor

the royal tutor anime

Heine Wittgenstein is the royal tutor in the court of king Grannzreich. Unfortunately for this little professor, he has a big job cut out for him by being in charge of the education for the king’s four distinctly personalitied sons.

Why It Is Worth Watching? – As most reviews you might of read state, “don’t worry this isn’t a BL “Yuri on Ice”-type series”. Well, that’s true, but what makes it so good? Think of this series a lot like Ouran High School Host Club. it is a comedy series primarily and you have four princes who are four different clichéd tropes. Dealing with their dalliances is as much of a pleasure in this show as it was in Ouran.
