Not quite human, not quite kemonomimi, not quite animal – Anime characters with human bodies and full animal heads are a rarity in the realms of bit beastly anime. Typically, they are the victim of a curse wherein the animal head is meant to make them an outcast. Though you’ll find that in most cases, the animal head only makes them more vicious. If you are looking for the few gems that show off human anime characters with beast heads, then head on down below.
Best Anime Featuring Human Characters With Beast Heads
Dorohedoro
Living in a town where the residents are frequently the target of torture and experiments by mages who live in a separate realm, Kaiman is a man who doesn’t remember who he is or who cursed him with having a lizard head. However, as he is impervious to magic, he hunts down mages to try and lift the curse and right the wrongs done to many at the hands of callus mages.
Guin Saga
After their kingdom was invaded and fell, the twin prince and princess were spirited away from the palace by a device to distant woodlands. There, they are rescued from soldiers by a man with a leopard head. Guin, which is what he presumes his name to be, is a man cursed with that head and without memories of who he was or how his disfiguration came to be.
No Guns Life
Thanks to a corporation, powerful cyborg soldiers roam the city, often causing problems. Juuzou Inui is one such cyborg soldier who was created for war, but doesn’t possess any memories after a certain point. Part of his augmentation means having a literal gun for a head. While he has plenty of other weapons at his disposal in his augmented body, his gun head is the most powerful, though it requires someone else to fire.
My Hero Academia
While the main character is a normal boy in every sense, having a non-human head is a common occurrence in My Hero Academia, a series all about a world where almost everyone has a super power. You have dog and cat-faced police, bird-headed people, even one dude with a manga speech bubble for a head.
Wonder Egg Priority
Unfortunately, the odd-headed people in Wonder Egg Priority don’t make an appearance until near the end. The major antagonists of the series are a group of girls with rather beautifully ugly bugs instead of heads. The whole series is a trip like that.
Beastars
In Beastars, predators and prey live side by side, but not always happily. While you could argue that, since they are covered in fur too, they don’t quite fit this list, but their bodies act human in every way.
Grimoire of Zero
If I added Beastars, I have to include Grimoire of Zero as well. While the Zero may dominate the title and drive the plot, it is her companion Mercenary that has a beast head. He is a cursed human called a Beastfallen that possesses the characteristics and strength of an animal. It is good for mercenary work, but has made him shunned his whole life.
Durarara
Celty, a major character in the large cast of characters in Durarara, is a Dullahan. This type of fairy means their head is not attached to their body, though it is human. However, her head is missing and instead of being a headless monstrosity, she goes about town with a motorcycle helmet in its place.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride
While the animal skull face of Elias may look like that of a curse akin to some others on this list, it is not. In fact, very little is known about him except he is discriminated by both mages and faerie people. Unfortunate, since he has traits of both with his skull face coming from his faerie side.
