You can toss a rock at an anime list of even a modest length and hit an anime about the members of a school club doing something. It is a quick and easy excuse to bring characters together for a variety of club shenanigans. However, while a lot of school club anime series keep things realistic or just stick to comedy, others use the club as a way to explore the supernatural occurrences of their members.
Best Supernatural School Clubs Anime
Kokoro Connect
The club in Kokoro Connect seems like a club akin to any other, though with most members being there in order to shirk having to join a real club. Everything is normal for awhile, too. That is, right up until the members start switching bodies. As you can expect, when you slip into a person’s skin, the emotions start slipping out with it.
When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace
This is a fun one. Essentially those chunibyou delusions you occasionally see in anime become real. Some of the powers are amazing, and some of the powers seem absolutely useless. However, the club members think major anime-esque battles are coming, train for them, and then those battles never come. There does end up being something else going on, but much of the series is just tackling emotional issues of the members.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
It isn’t clear immediately, but any series that starts off with the main character saying they don’t believe in aliens, time travel, or espers means that it is totally going to be about those things, right? Well your completely average main character is dragged into a club that seems to be about nothing, and over time you get the feeling that there is a lot more going on under the surface.
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches
Imagine, if you will, a club formed all around having a guy smooch girls to discover if they have powers activated by smooching. It is a recipe for comedy or sexual assault allegations. Apparently their school has a legend about having seven witches who have powers that can only be activated by a kiss. Of course the main character discovers this accidentally and then the Supernatural Studies Club gets involved. They then deem that they must kiss all the girls!
Charlotte
While Charlotte initially starts about a guy with the power to switch bodies for five seconds getting caught cheating and forced to join the student council of another school to find more people with powers, that quickly goes even more off the rails. Charlotte starts off a lot like these other fun supernatural club happening series, then gets really quite dramatic and serious by the end. It’s actually a really great change.
Beyond the Boundary
Lazy literary club by day, world-saving youmu fighters by night. Essentially the club in this series is a convenient cover for the spirit world warriors that safeguard the world. While that all sounds quite serious, Beyond the Boundary is often nothing short of absolutely adorable, especially considering one youmu is dispatched through an idol-like performance.
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Students that enjoy ghost stories meet an actual ghost of a school, form a club, and investigate more about the ghost herself and other mysteries. It is actually quite logical, if you think about it. If you see one ghost, then it becomes infinitely more likely that all those other ghost stories are actually real. However, eventually the story shifts towards the less fun/creepy and more towards the dramatic and romantic.
Rewrite
This series is about a guy with a superpower getting drafted into the Occult Club. Apparently superpowers are more common than one would think as all the members have them. The fun bit of the series is that each members’ power is discovered and explored throughout there series, so everyone isn’t immediately endowed with an ability.
Angel Beats
I’m not entirely sure this counts, but I’m counting it. Considering the school is really just a facade, I’m not sure if the SSS Brigade counts as an actual club. Regardless, it is established in the first episode that everyone is dead and they are in some sort of school-like purgatory. As such, the leader of the club gathered people to rage against God.
