In this world where everyone is born with a special skill, the useful skills find respect in society. Those with particularly good skills are often elevated into noble families and rise through the ranks of the Holy Knights that protect the people.
However, for people like Fate Graphite whose Gluttony skill just means he is always hungry, he struggles through each day just to stay fed.
However, one day Fate discovers the true nature of Gluttony. His skill awakens and allows him to absorb the stats and skills of everything he kills. However, the more he devours, the more he must devour or risk losing himself in a berserk starving state.
This series creates an interesting, if not edgy, ability, but I think its animation holds it back from a lot of its potential. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Berserk of Gluttony, head on down below.

For Fans of Weak to Strong
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
In the fantasy city of Orario, there is a massive labyrinth underneath it. For brave adventurers, glory and fortune can be found within. In order to tackle the challenging monsters inside, adventures join guilds of strong gods and goddesses.
However, for newbie adventurer Bell Cranel, no good guild will have him, except for Hestia, a goddess with no followers. Together they team up to grow strong and find glory.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon and Berserk of Gluttony present worlds of hierarchy where the strong loom over the weak who are left to languish. However, both series are about those weak main characters rising up in power.
While both series are adventure tales that always take the characters to that next stronger enemy, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon does have a place for Bell to return to whereas Berserk of Gluttony features Fate wandering more from place to place.
Arifureta – From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
Otaku Hajime Nagumo and several of his classmates are summoned to a fantasy world and tasked with saving mankind. However, while his classmates are gifted with great abilities, Hajime only has transmutation skills that have no real offensive use.
He is soon betrayed by a classmate and sent into an abyss filled with monsters. Resolving to not die to the darkness, he struggles to survive and teams up with an imprisoned vampire to return to the world above.
Both Berserk of Gluttony and Arifureta feature initially weak main characters who believe their innate, unchangeable abilities aren’t anything special. However, one day they make a sudden discovery that leads them to rapidly grow into an overpowered protagonist.
While Berserk of Gluttony just has Fate discover the true nature of his power from a sword, Arifureta has the main character grow strong after a betrayal. This does make him distinctly less friendly than Fate and on a path for revenge. However, both Fate and Hajime have the ability to gain abilities from the foes they kill.
So I’m a Spider So What?
On one normal day in high school, the lives of many students ended unexpectedly. Some were reincarnated as nobles or strong heroes. Others were reincarnated as wondrous fantasy creatures.
Unfortunately for one girl, she was reincarnated as a lowly cave spider.
No stranger to hardship given her difficult school life, she vows to not give up, and through an RPG system, grows stronger each day.
So I’m a Spider So What has the distinct difference from Berserk of Gluttony of being an isekai, and one with a spider as a main character at that.
What Berserk of Gluttony and So I’m A Spider So What have in common is that both main characters start off pathetically weak. However, they slowly grow in strength and unlock new abilities throughout their many battles.
Both series feature a strong emphasis on the main character leveling up from each new encounter and have a strong action focus.
I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too
As he was ugly, fat, and disappointing, Yuuya has been the constant target for bullies. Even his parents and siblings treated him like an outcast. However, Yuuya’s grandfather was the only source of affection in his life, but he eventually passed away.
Being left his grandfather’s home, Yuuya discovers a strange door that opens to another world. Inside, he finds himself in the home of a sage and discovers a number of powerful weapons. Using these to defeat dangerous creatures in the surrounding forest, Yuuya discovers that he can level up, gain equipment, and even sell items upon leaving the world for real life currency.
After a day of adventure, Yuuya wakes up to discover that leveling up in the other world has leveled up his body in the real world too.
While Cheat Skill in Another World has the distinct difference of being a sort of isekai where he can travel back and forth between his world and a fantasy world, it does feature a similar sort of power system to Berserk of Gluttony.
Both series feature main characters that start off very weak, but due to their unique power – or unique ability to level up in another world – they become quickly overpowered from slaying enemies. Unlike Berserk of Gluttony that takes skills from fallen foes, Cheat Skill in Another World is more about getting skills from battle drops and leveling up. Regardless, you watch these genuinely nice main character suddenly elevate their lives in every way with their new powers, friends, and wealth.
For Fans of Dark Fantasy
Goblin Slayer
A young priestess fresh out of the temple is excited to start her life as an adventurer. On her first day, she joins an adventuring party to go slay some goblins.
However, like so many young adventure parties before them, they underestimate the goblins. It ends with two dead, one viciously raped, and the priestess saved from fate by a man whose only mission in life is to slay all the goblins.
While Goblin Slayer and the beginning of Berserk of Gluttony share a big pile of dead goblins in common, both of these dark fantasy anime have plots that rely on and are driven by the need to slaughter creatures.
In Berserk of Gluttony, he kills to gain abilities and not go into his berserk starved state. In Goblin Slayer, the main character doesn’t necessarily need to kill anything, but he has a strong need to destroy every goblin that he comes across.
In both of these series, they really aren’t so much about the characters. Goblin Slayer doesn’t even give the characters proper names. Instead, what shines is the interesting and occasionally gruesome action in a bleak world where there is never a shortage of things to kill.
The Eminence in Shadow
Like most kids, Kagerou wanted to be a hero, but unlike most kids, he never grew out of that phase. He constantly trained his body to achieve it. In modern Japan, he was unable to achieve that goal, understanding that he could never reach enough power to be the type of hero he wanted to be.
However, when he was reborn in a new world, he pretends to be just another character in the world. He recruits people into his organization, Shadow Garden, and decides to target a sinister cult that is lurking in the shadows that he wishes to occupy.
Despite being an isekai, Eminence in Shadow portrays a dark fantasy world similar to Berserk of Gluttony and also appreciates giving the main character a certain degree of edginess.
Both series feature main characters who act, or legitimately are, pleasant and friendly during the day, but they have a dark, masked side that comes out at night when they do all their shadowy activities.
Unlike Fate, Cid is a powerful mage, but his magic is as overwhelming as Fate’s sword skills. Aside from the difference in combat style, they both hide their power during the day so they can continue to fight creatures and villains in the shadows at night without earning any fame.
I’m Standing on a Million Lives
Bored with the world that surrounds him, loner Yotsuya Yusuke is one day transported to a new world with two girls from his class.
There, he finds out that they have been playing a game with ten increasingly difficult rounds. After beating each round, they get to pose a question to the game master before heading back home.
On this, the third round, Yusuke finds himself excited for the first time in a long time, only for his battle class to be rolled as a weak farmer.
Together with his teammates, they struggle to survive and move forward or face certain death.
While a sort of isekai, I’m Standing on a Million Lives presents a gamified version of isekai where the characters gain classes, abilities, and level up. However, while an isekai world, it does portray that world as a dark fantasy where people and things die gruesomely, not unlike Berserk of Gluttony.
While Fate is definitely the nicer main character of these two series, both series feature main characters that are weak, but eventually grow strong. While Fate often relies on Greed to handle strategy and advise him, I’m Standing on a Million Lives present a main character that is colder, but much more calculating when it comes to battles.
For Fans of Noble Organizations That Are Actually Evil
Ningen Fushin – Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save The World
Nick, Tiana, Zem, and Curran are all adventurers who have been pushed away, betrayed, and trampled on by their peers.
One night, these four paths cross in a tavern where they air their grievances to each other as well as the hobbies they took up to take the sting out of the way they were treated.
After a long night of drinking, the morning brings with it a bright idea – they should make their own adventuring party!
Together, they agree to team up, with everyone watching the group finances and an agreement to never interfere with each other’s hobbies outside of their jobs. However, for four people who find it hard to trust others, they now have to adjust to working together.
Berserk of Gluttony and Ningen Fushin are fantasy anime that follow main characters that are considered the dregs of society. While Fate is stepped upon by Holy Knights that treat the weak poorly, Ningen Fushin is about an adventuring party made up of adventurers that have all been betrayed before.
Essentially, both series emphasis characters that are down on their luck, but have the hearts of real heroes. They also emphasis how terrible some famous, noble, and powerful heroes can be to the weak.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
The stories tell of four heroes summoned from another world – the sword, spear, bow, and shield heroes who will prevent calamity. With darkness bearing down on them, the Kingdom of Melromarc summons these heroes from modern day Japan.
For otaku Naofumi Iwatani, unfortunately he is labeled the shield hero, the weakest of the group. Worse yet, betrayal sees him labeled as a criminal and outcasted.
With hatred and vengeance consuming him, he sets forth to grow strong.
Similar to the Holy Knights in Berserk of Gluttony that are a mix of honorable and wildly corrupt, The Rising of the Shield Hero shows off a kingdom that prizes certain heroes over others. It also shows how terribly they treat those who are not preferred.
While The Rising of the Shield Hero is an isekai, it features a main character similar to Fate who is made cold and bitter by a serious betrayal. However, while their personalities differ, both series have a similar power system where they can gain stats and abilities based on what they kill.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
At the Tower of the Fang where they train future sorcerers, Krylancelo and his foster sister Azalie were both promising students. However, one night during an experiment, Azalie is turned into a monster and flees.
Not wanting to hurt the Tower’s reputation, the elders rush to cover up the incident. Wanting to saving his sister, Krylancelo leaves the Tower to find a way to change her back, taking up the new name of Orphen.
Five years later, he has finally found Azalie, but the Tower of the Fang is making their move as well.
Both Berserk of Gluttony and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen create interesting, non-isekai fantasy worlds with intricate cultures, organizations, and characters. They then show off that world by having the main characters travel the world and get involved in various issues.
Unlike Fate that was tread on by Holy Knights, Orphen was part of a mage organization where he discovered that they were not as noble as he thought when they tried to save face after a failed experiment that transformed his friend.
