Upon moving with his family from Tokyo to Kitami City in Hokkaido, Tsubasa Shiki is captivated by the rural serenity of the Hokkaido winter. He was so captivated that he ended up getting out of his taxi way earlier than he needed to, leaving him to trek an unfamiliar city in the middle of winter.
Stopping to ask directions from someone waiting at a bus stop, he has his first encounter with Minami Fuyuki, a fashionable gyaru who has an elevated interest in this new boy from Tokyo.
After learning that Fuyuki is also in his class, the pair grow closer as he learns that girls in Hokkaido are all super adorable.

However, while Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is about a city boy moving to Hokkaido and the girl thinking he was interesting despite being unpopular in Tokyo, Out Dating Story is about a unpopular guy asking a gyaru out on a dare and starting a wholesome relationship instead.
My Dress-Up Darling
Living with his grandfather who makes beautiful Hina Dolls, Wakana Gojo has loved them since he was a child. He aspires to one day make Hina Dolls as good as his grandfather, but his dedication has made him a bit of a loner in school after a girl in his childhood said that boys shouldn’t like dolls.
After a run in with the beautiful and popular Marin Kitagawa, he discovers that she wants to cosplay a character from an eroge game.
However, her sewing skills leave something to be desired, and after seeing her passion, Gojo agrees to help her make her costume.
Both Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable and My Dress Up Darling are about quiet, somewhat unpopular boys who have a clandestine meeting with popular fashionable girls and strike up an instant friendship.
They both present the male main characters as fairly normal, but not popular. Meanwhile, they present the girls as actually nice and friendly instead of popular and mean like is the more common stereotype. However, romance moves at a reasonable pace in Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable. My Dress Up Darling is more focused on cosplay and baiting a romance that moves very slowly.
My First Girlfriend is a Gal
Although he has reached the spring of his youth, Junichi is finding it harder than expected to get a girlfriend, but that is due in no small part to his friends brazen habit of reading dirty magazines in class.
In order to “help” him, his virgin friends submitted a love letter in his name to the resident gyaru of his class, Yame Yukana. However, while she may dress like a gal, this tough-looking girl is actually as pure as the snow.

Both series are about a normal, unpopular guys who starts a romance with a gyaru who is a nice, surprisingly innocent girl that isn’t afraid to show a little flesh. However, Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable sticks to friendship at first while My First Girlfriend is a Gal has them dating in the first episode. My First Girlfriend is a Gal is also, as mentioned, a lot more ecchi-focused, using it frequently for comedy.
For Fans of City Meets Country
Hanasaku Iroha
Ohana Matsumae is an energetic teenager that lives with her mother in Tokyo. However, when her mother decides to run off with a man, she is sent to the country to live with a grandmother she has never met.
As it turns out, her grandmother runs a traditional Japanese inn, but due to her frivolous mother, treats Ohana quite coldly. Eager to earn her keep and grandmother’s affection, Ohana begins the hard work that makes sure an inn runs smoothly.
Both Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable and Hanasaku Iroha follow a city person moving to a rural area where they do their best to integrate from fast city life into a slower, hard-working country atmosphere.
However, while Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is about a love affair with a country gyaru, Hanasaku Iroha is more slice of life focused, but does have an element of romance between the main character and a boy who confessed to her before she left the city. However, happy romantic relationships are definitely not the focus in Hanasaku Iroha. It is distinctly more of a coming-of-age story.
Waiting in Summer
While testing out his filming camera one night, Kaito is blown off the bridge by a streak of blue light. As he is falling, the last thing he remembers is a hand, grabbing his own.
When he wakes up, he finds himself mysteriously back in his room, dazed but uninjured.
As Kaito proceeds with his summer break, deciding to make a movie with his friends, he takes an interest the new upperclassman wandering the town, Ichika Takatsuki, and she ends up invited to join them.
In truth, Waiting in Summer is a bit different than the “city boy moves to the country” set up of Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable in that it is about a romance between a teen boy and an alien girl. However, the alien girl is presented as “the new girl in town” in a similar way as Tsubasa in Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable.
What Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is to winter romance, Waiting in Summer is to a summer romance. Both series capture those seasonal vibes masterfully and carry out interesting romance stories. However, Waiting in Summer doesn’t have any ecchi to it.
Non Non Biyori
Asahigaoka is rural village in the middle of nowhere, and for the five students who go to school there, their days are all about keeping the boredom at bay.
All of different ages, the ways they entertain themselves never border on normal.
Both Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable and Non Non Biyori are about city people moving to the country and befriending the local rural children who are fascinated by their big city ways.
That said, Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is a ecchi romance anime and Non Non Biyori is a very much a plotless, Cute Girls Doing Cute Things slice of life anime. So they provide fairly different experiences. Yet, what they actually do share most of all is a dedication to presenting the seasons in an aesthetic nature.
Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable really emphasizes winter and its charms while Non Non Biyori enjoys its long, lingering shots of the countryside in the summer time. They both, as the kids would say, have distinct vibes, just for different seasons.
Silver Spoon
Yuugo Hachiken is a hard-working, studious student, but he is tired of trying to live up to the academic expectations that are placed on him. So when it comes time to go to high school, he enrolls in the Ooezo Agricultural High School in Hokkaido.
Being so clever, he thinks he will excel in the institution, but soon learns that farming is much harder work, both physically and emotionally, more so than he expected.
Both Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable and Silver Spoon are about Tokyo boys moving to Hokkaido and almost immediately falling for a country girl that they meet. However, while they share that same initial hook, they follow different types of stories.
Both series are school anime, and Silver Spoon does have some hints at romance. However, Silver Spoon is actually more of an educational anime that takes place in an agricultural high school in Hokkaido where the main character learns a variety of different farming practices and techniques.

More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers
Jirou Yakuin, third-year high school student and otaku, has had a crush on his childhood friend, Shiori. He hopes to be paired with her for their school’s upcoming marriage practical – an exam where two people are paired to live together in order to practice married life as they are observed and scored.
For popular Akari Watanabe, she hopes to be paired with the handsome Minami. Much to each other’s dismay, Jirou and Akari and paired together while Minami and Shiori are paired together.
Luckily, if both couples rank in the top, they can change partners, thus do Akari and Jirou venture to pretend to have a perfect married life.
Both Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable and More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers are school-focused romance with plenty of flirting at home between a gyaru and an average, not popular male main character.
However, while Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable has a main romance and a little hint at harem, More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers is more focused on a love triangle that develops between the girl he is forced to live with and his crush.
Regardless, a lot of girls in both series like this normal guy and both series are very suggestive with their female characters without being as bodaciously ecchi as some other series could be.
Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro
After an encounter in the library where she teased him about his manga, Naoto Hachijouji is relentlessly teased by a younger first year girl named Nagatoro.
She takes every opportunity to toy with him and leave him embarrassed, but over time, he has found a friendship was built between them.
While Minami likes tease Tsubasa a fair bit at first in Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable, the teasing never gets to quite the same level that Please Don’t Bully Me, Miss Nagatoro has throughout its run.
Both series are about normal, unpopular guys that have a clandestine run-in with a popular girl who develops an interest in him. While Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is often flirty, Please Don’t Bully Me, Miss Nagatoro is bordering on malicious before developing into more of a flirty affair as they actually grow closer.
