Touya Mochizuki is accidentally killed, and as an apology, God allows him to be reborn into a fantasy world. He also gets one wish.
Touya chooses to use his wish to keep his smartphone that he uses to give him the knowledge to thrive his new world. However, after meeting a pair of other adventurers, he finds that, while his smartphone is handy, his powerful magical affinity makes him one of the strongest mages in the world.
In Another World With My Smartphone is certainly an unambitious isekai anime, but the low-key, quickly over, harem-stuffed adventures that it does offer are certainly exactly what some isekai fans are looking for. For Fans of Main Characters With OP Magic
Death March to a Parallel World Rhapsody
Suzuki Ichirou is a programmer for a game company, and in order to keep up with demands, he frequently sets his work pace to “death march” in which he works for days straight with little sleep and without going home.
During one of these death marches, he falls asleep and when he wakes up, he is somehow transported inside of one of his games.
Like Touya has access to useful information from his smartphone, Death March has the main character have access to useful information by being sent inside the game he was working on. However, while In Another World With My Smartphone explains how he got there, Death March leaves it a bit more mysterious.
Regardless, both of these isekai anime have main characters that attract a harem by both being nice, being very good at magic, or – like in Death March – buying them to free them from slavery. They then all travel around in a wagon and have adventures that are usually quickly concluded by the main character’s strong abilities.
Isekai Cheat Magician
Taichi and Ren, high school students and childhood friends, are transported to a fantasy world by a beam of light one afternoon.
After narrowly escaping a monster attack, they travel with a group of adventurers to the guild. There, they discover that their magical aptitude is off the charts!
Now in possession of incredibly magical ability, the must familiarize themselves with this world while they search for a way home.
It might be kind of insulting to say, but both In Another World With My Smartphone and Isekai Cheat Magician are isekai anime that don’t try very hard. They check all the boxes and don’t try very hard at all to be different, but that is what some people want in an isekai anime, so…
Both series are about characters that are sent to a new world, have an OP affinity for magic, become adventurers, show off their magnificent abilities, and those abilities often attract new harem members.
However, Isekai Cheat Magician is less about small adventures like In Another World With My Smartphone and occasionally dedicated to solving the mystery of why they were sent to that world and if they can get back.
Wise Man’s Grandchild
After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin.
However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew in to an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.
In Another World With My Smartphone has Touya just happen to have perfect magic affinity since God granted it to him. However, that isn’t the hook of the show. In Wise Man’s Grandchild, the hook of the show is that the main character has great magical ability, but poor social skills.
What you get in both anime series is a main character that can quickly dispatch any threat with his magic, which means the anime has more time to focus on the harem building up around them. However, Wise Man’s Grandchild takes more time out for comedy to play on the other end of its hook – his poor social skills.
Beast Tamer
Rein is a beast tamer and member of the Hero’s Party. However, because beast taming is rather weak magic, he is used as more of a errand boy for them instead.
That all changes when they finally fire him and he is set adrift. Kicked out of the party, he ends up meeting a girl from one of the strongest species of beast people and tames her.
Together, they become magnificent adventurers while the Hero’s Party begins to realize that their previous success was all due to Rein’s support.
Although the main character in Beast Tamers isn’t a mage in the same way Touya is, he is still overpowered in his beast taming magic as demonstrated throughout the anime.
While both series follow main characters with very strong, almost mythical magic abilities, what they most have in common is that the main characters are perfectly nice young men and their power as well as their niceness attract them a harem.
However, while Touya’s companions are strong, Rein has companions who are all also of top-tier ability since they are powerful beast people. This does also mean that Beast Tamer has more frequent action so it can flex these characters.
For Fans of Tripping Over New Wives in a Fantasy World
The Fruit of Evolution – Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made
Seiichi Hiragi is a fat loser who has been outcasted and bullied at school. However, one day it was announced by a being claiming to be god that they would all be transported to another world, but had to wait for the summoning to be completed.
The school formed up into groups, but Seiichi was shunned. This caused him to be transported elsewhere when they went to a new world.
Hungry, he ate a fruit that turned out to be the fruit of evolution, spiraling his life to new heights.
In Another World With My Smartphone and The Fruit of Evolution are cut from almost the exact same cloth. Both series have bouts of action, easily solved by the main character if not his battle harem, both series have the main characters being pretty laid-back about everything, both series have them becoming friends with royalty, and, most importantly – both series have the main character with multiple wives on deck.
Aside from The Fruit of Evolution having a goodly portion of his harem evolved from actual animals, neither anime tries to innovate the isekai formula, they just do it pretty well. The Fruit of Evolution, outside of the times it tries for serious action, is actually a pretty good comedy too.
The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?
One day, 25-year-old Shingo Ichinomiya goes to sleep and wakes up a 6-year-old in a medieval noble family.
Unfortunately, he soon comes to learn that his noble family is not only quite poor, but he is actually the 8th son and looking at virtually no inheritance.
He is, however, talented at magic and decides to work to bring prosperity to his family.
In this age where all isekai needs to have a hook, both In Another World With My Smartphone and the 8th Son have their hook that is stated in the title, but neither hook plays that large of a part in the actual series. The smartphone is handy, but Touya’s magic is handier. Being an 8th son has almost no impact aside from motivating the main character to learn magic to secure a comfortable future.
Regardless, both series see the main characters becoming wildly good at magic and then tripping over women that will soon want to marry him. However, The 8th Son is trying a little harder to be an action anime.
The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar
Yuuto Suoh and his childhood friend set out to prove an urban legend one day at a nearby shrine. However, when he does, he is transported to another world called Yggdrasil.
In this land of constant war, he is taken in by the Wolf Clan who struggle due to their inferior tactics. However, using his knowledge of tactics (and his smartphone) he gains the affection of both the patriarch of the clan and a group of warrior maidens known as the Einherjar.
Although it isn’t made obvious in the title like with In Another World With My Smartphone, The Master of Rargnarok is also an isekai about a main character whose “special power” is to just keep his smartphone in another world.
While The Master of Ragnarok has the main character using his smartphone a lot more often, it remains pretty similar to In Another World With My Smartphone. The main character is OP in their world – this time because of his knowledge – and that overpowered-ness attracts a harem of girls that he’s not really interested in, but they are all super into him.
Conception
On his graduation day, Itsuki is approached by his cousin and told she is pregnant. At that moment, a gate of light opens and the pair are transported to Granvania.
In this world, impurities are plunging Granvania into chaos, but it is discovered the Itsuki has the power to save them. By meeting Star Maiden and making Star Children with them, his children can help purge the world of impurities.
Waifus. Waifus everywhere. Can’t walk ten feet without tripping over a new one trying to pull off your pants and make some kids.
That’s what these two anime have most in common. The harem of women that constantly grows and obsessively love the pretty normal main character. However, unlike Touya, who is a nice young man, the main character in Conception takes his duties as a main character more seriously.
While Conception is about having kids with a bunch of girls, they are more like magical MacGuffins for battle than actual children. It is less lewd than it sounds.
For Fans of Light-Hearted Isekai Adventures
By The Grace of the Gods
After leading a miserable life, Ryouma Takebayashi passes away at age 39.
Three deities, taking pity on him, reincarnate him into a fantasy world with an aptitude for magic, telling him to enjoy life and that they will always watch out for him.
With his newfound existence, he spends it studying slimes, amassing a slime army, and learning some magic, but he misses humanity. Being persuaded to join a group of travelers, Ryouma’s new world opens up for him.
You know that one time in In Another World With My Smartphone where they go to the mansion full of slimes? I like to think that was once the home of Ryouma from By the Grace of the Gods since the only thing he really enjoys is breeding and making new slimes.
Outside of that, both of these series are what I would call “soothing isekai,” and what that means is there is action, but it is often finished quickly. The rest of the time, the main character is having rather wholesome adventures and bonding with his friends or harem.
However, By The Grace of the Gods isn’t a harem anime and the main character tends to spend more time developing his business or his talents privately, whereas Touya is almost never alone.
Farming Life in Another World
After dying of an illness, Machio Hiraku is given the opportunity to reincarnate into another world.
The god grants him a healthy body and his wish to live peacefully. Machio also asks if he can have a talent for agriculture in hopes that he can live a more fulfilling life.
The god grants him all this as well as the ability to summon a farming tool that can turn into any agricultural tool he needs, including one that makes any seeds he can think of.
Machio is sent in the middle of a forest full of dangerous creatures. Without any civilization in sight, he makes his own small farm that slowly accumulates residents that wander the woods.
While In Another World With My Smartphone takes the standard approach of making the main character so strong that his adventures are actually finished pretty quickly, Farming Life in Another World takes the different approach of having the main character just be a farmer. Of course, he is also has an “OP I win” weapon that solves any dangerous problems immediately as well as a battle harem.
Unlike In Another World With My Smartphone, Farming life in Another World, while perhaps having the biggest harem of any anime ever, isn’t really focused on harem activities. The main character is building out his village while the girls thirst after him.
What makes these series so similar is that they are always very positive, never dramatic, and always pretty wholesome if not slightly horny. If you like your isekai not stressful and don’t mind it being low on action, but high on character interaction, Farming Life in Another World is a great option.
Outbreak Company
With parents that write light novels and draw eroge, Kanou Shinichi was born to be an otaku.
One day, he finds himself transported to a fantasy world full of elves and dragons.
In this world he is given a quest, not to fight monsters, but to become a moe missionary to teach everyone on the finer points of being an otaku.
Both In Another World With My Smartphone and Outbreak Company have main characters who are constantly adored by every lady that he meets and uses his knowledge of the modern world to help his new fantasy land.
However, while Touya uses his smartphone to occasionally do that, Outbreak Company has the main character more dependent on his own personal knowledge.
Regardless, both series are about nice young men enjoying rather soothing isekai lives in another world. However, Outbreak Company doesn’t quite have as much action as In Another World With My Smartphone.
