Anime Like KamiKatsu – What God Does in a World Without Gods

As his father is the leader of a cult religion, Yukito Urabe is often at the mercy of his whims. One whim sees him tossed into the ocean with the belief that their god, Mitama, will save him. As he drowns, Yukito wishes to be reborn in a world without gods and religion.

His wish comes true when he wakes up in a world completely devoid of religion, but learns that the government carries out an end-of-life system where people regularly are killed and those who do not wish to be killed voluntarily toil away in isolated villages until they are taken by force to be executed.

After Yukito’s new friends from one isolation camp are taken to be forcefully executed, he awakens Mitama with a prayer who descends from the sky and annihilates anyone that hurt him and his friends.

The one time I was like “a world without religion, that seems like an interesting hook for an isekai,” the series turns out to be a comedy isekai. Oh well! It pleased the degenerate in me. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like KamiKatsu, head on down below.

anime series like konosuba

Konosuba

On his way back from buying a new game, Kazuma Satou died a pathetic death.

However, he awakens before the Goddess Aqua who gives him two choices: go to heaven or reincarnate into an actual fantasy world. Naturally, the gamer picks the fantasy world.

Now, Kazuma must deal with defeating an evil demon king, useless party members, and paying living expenses.

KamiKatsu and Konosuba are both comedy isekai anime in which the comically scummy main character is isekai’d to a new world with a goddess who is comically useless except in specific circumstances.

While KamiKatsu builds its series all around deities and religion, Konosuba remains a more traditional fantasy isekai adventure. It is just that, like in KamiKatsu, every member of the main cast is some kind of flawed. However, in both series, those flawed characters are still powerful in specific situations, but comical in most others.

cautious hero anime

Cautious Hero – The Hero is Overpowered But Overly Cautious

In the divine realm, Gods and Goddesses are assigned worlds in peril to summon heroes to guide on their quest to save those worlds.

The Goddess of Healing, Ristarte, is assigned a difficult S-class world and told to pick a hero to defeat the Demon King. While her choices are underwhelming, one low level hero with super stats catches her eye!

Seiya Ryuuguuin is indeed a powerful hero, but he also has the problematic quirk of being overly cautious. His desire to stay on the safe side, over-preparing and over-training for all encounters, is a source of frustration for all.

Both KamiKatsu and Cautious Hero are comedy isekai anime that are better if you don’t take them too seriously.

While KamiKatsu sets itself from the wild herd of isekai with its unique concept of a world without religion, Cautious Hero sets itself apart by being about a hero that is on his second time being an isekai hero.

Both series have an abundance of deities, but while the deities in KamiKatsu run the gamut of serious to silly, Cautious Hero starts with all the deities being serious, but eventually being some form of mentally broken by the hero’s insatiable lust for training.

Honestly, Cautious Hero is a series easy to overlook, but it is a great watch if you liked the comedy in KamiKatsu.

The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace anime

The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace

800 years ago, as terrifying demons pushed mankind to the brink, they prayed to the gods and called for their aid. Emerging from these prayers, battle deities called Idaten came forth.

With great strength and endurance, they defeated the demons, sealing many of them away. Now, in a long era of peace, the present generation of Idaten have grown soft, save for a spare few that endure the brutal training of Rin, the last Idaten from the demon war.

However, the Zoble Empire seeks to resurrect the demons and it seems these peaceful Idaten must remember their original purpose.

As both series are built around – at least in part – people fighting against an evil empire and their minions, I feel like you can easily describe both KamiKatsu and The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace as “weirdos fighting weirdos.” Neither the empire’s forces/the deities that previously served the empire nor the “heroes”/idaten deities are normal, well-adjusted people.

Both sides of the fight in these anime series are quirky, degenerate characters that are pretty amusing to watch. However, the big difference is that, while often comical, The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace actually does do action really well.

For Fans of Manipulating the World

dungeon of black company anime

The Dungeon of Black Company

Kinji has finally perfected his NEET lifestyle through shrewd money management. However, just when he is able to hang out for the rest of his life, he is transported to another world.

There, he is immediately shoved into a harsh mining job for a black company that cares only about profits and quotas. However, as the world’s laziest and most clever NEET, Kinji is determined to be a layabout.

Both KamiKatsu and The Dungeon of Black Company are comedy isekai anime where the main characters really didn’t want to be isekai’d, but are determined to make the best of their new situation.

While Yukito has rather noble motives for manipulating the world, Kinji in The Dungeon of Black Company is a more selfish manipulator. Regardless, both main characters are accompanied by an ensemble of companions that are all comically flawed and varying degrees of useful.

However, while KamiKatsu is religion-themed, The Dungeon of Black Company is more focused on corrupt companies that overwork employees for profits, poking fun at Japan’s ‘black’ companies that abuse workers.

combatants will be dispatched anime

Combatants Will be Dispatched

On Earth, the villainous Kisaragi Corporation has finally conquered everything, but they have their eye on the entire universe. Having finally created a transporter, they send agent Roku-gou to the kingdom of Grace where he is to infiltrate and eventually conquer the kingdom for the corporation.

Of course, to ensure the success of one of their more disposable agents, they send with him Alice, an exceptional android, to make sure the mission is carried out.

Finally arriving, Roku-gou and Alice end up infiltrating the inner circle of the kingdom and helping them secure victory against an invading Demon Lord.

Both KamiKatsu and Combatants Will be Dispatched are comedy isekai anime that also feature non-traditional types of being isekai’d – i.e. KamiKatsu is actually a far future of Earth while Combatants Will Be Dispatched is the main character sent to another planet that just so happens to be a traditional fantasy setting.

However, what they most share in common is their not really heroic main characters who are consistently manipulating people and events in the world to get the outcome they want. KamiKatsu doesn’t really have a clear overall goal, but Combatants Will be Dispatched has the main character helping a kingdom so his organization can take it over later.

For Fans of Degenerate Comedy

grand blue anime

Grand Blue

Iori Kitahara is excited to travel to the seaside town of Izu for his first year of college. He moves into his uncle’s scuba shop, Grand Blue, but things don’t go according to plan.

Inside the shop is a bunch of naked and drunk upperclassman who get him drunk. After his cousin walks in, his college life starts to derail, but his work getting it back on track doesn’t go quite as planned either.

To be perfectly candid, KamiKatsu and Grand Blue differ greatly in both setting and plot. However, the similarities between them are actually perfectly noticeable.

Both series feature main characters that are normal, but also a little scummy and manipulative – in a comical way, not in a psychopathic way. Furthermore, they both share a similar style of comedy – degenerate ecchi comedy that isn’t actually lewd.

Frequently throughout each series, you watch the main characters take a break from any sort of plot to do some serious drinking, followed by degenerate drunk shenanigans. Grand Blue shows a comical university club experience with drinking and debauchery. By comparison, KamiKatsu really shows the same thing, but it is in a fantasy setting.

Although they differ in plot and general setting, both series are really just rather random, loosely tied shenanigans that follow a very broad plot, instead choosing to focus more on jokes.

the legendary hero is dead anime

The Legendary Hero is Dead

Far to the north, the Demon Lord used Hell’s Gate to invade the human realm. However, he was stopped by legendary sword wielding hero Shion and his companions.

While the portal was sealed, the seal was incomplete and now with it weakening, the demons have begun to attack again. Worried about his village, the young perverted farmer Touka Scott dug a series of pitfall traps for protection around town. Unfortunately, legendary hero Shion finds one of these traps, falls in, and dies.

Trying to cover up the accident, Touka buries the hero secretly in the forest. While that was to be the end of it, Touka’s soul is taken from his body and stuffed into Shion’s rotting corpse by Shion’s companion and necromancer, Anri Haynesworth. Now, he is forced to travel to Hell’s Gate in order to attempt to seal the portal for good and save the world.

While KamiKatsu is a comedy isekai anime and The Legendary Hero is Dead is just a normal comedic fantasy anime, what these series have most in common is the form of comedy they employ.

The type of comedy that KamiKatsu and The Legendary Hero is Dead use can best be described as degenerate ecchi. It’s not lewd ecchi comedy, instead it is more comically degenerate and aimed more at kinks and fetishes than boobs and butts.

Both are series that do actually have plots, The Legendary Hero is Dead more so, but they never take themselves too seriously for very long.

shimoneta anime

Shimoneta – A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist

While Japan was once the pit of sexual depravity, new morality laws and the Peace-Making System used to monitor the populace have seen Japan rise to the peaks of public morality.

With all lewdness censored to the point that children do not know how babies are made, an infamous erotic terrorist named Blue Snow has risen.

One day, average high schooler and the son of another infamous erotic terrorist, Tanukichi Okuma, is saved by Blue Snow on his way to his new high morality high school, only to be drawn into her new erotic terrorist organization, SOX, instead.

KamiKatsu had no indicator that it would be filled with degenerate ecchi comedy. However, with Shimoneta’s title, you can infer pretty quickly that it will be stuffed full of dirty jokes. However, you probably wouldn’t expect the sheer volume of dirty jokes that it wedges into each episode. Honestly, it’s impressive.

Anyway, if you enjoyed the sexual, kink-and-fetish-based comedy that’s not actually very graphically lewd, but don’t necessarily need the fantasy setting that KamiKatsu has, then Shimoneta is great.
