When she was a young child, Princess Anisphia recovered the memories of her previous life. Despite her having disappointingly no aptitude for magic, she uses the world’s magical capability and her past life knowledge of technology to form the realm of magicology.
One day while testing an invention, Anisphia crashes into a school party where her older brother is publicly breaking his engagement with Euphillia, robbing her of her future as a queen.
Anisphia whisks her away and asks her father to let her have her as an assistant and secretly hopes to make her a lover as well.
Magical Revolution would have been good as a fantasy-set shoujo ai romance, it would have been good as a royal political anime, and it would have been good as a magical adventure anime about magicology. However, while doing all three does add complexity, things did tend to feel a bit unfocused. For Fans of Being Dumped And Starting Fresh
I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss
Being constantly ill, a girl passed her time in the hospital playing otome games. However, one day she wakes up in the world of the game she was playing. What’s more, she wakes up as Aileen Lauren Dautriche, the villainess of the game.
After childhood friend and crown prince Cedric publicly breaks up with her for the game’s protagonist, Aileen makes moves to avoid the tragic future that results in her death.
She decides to propose to Cedric’s half-brother, Demon King Claude who, if left alone, would transform into a dragon and off-handedly kill her in the game.
So begins her quest to tame him.
There is a moment in both Magical Revolution and I’m the Villainess where a noble girl is getting very publicly broken up with by the crown prince for another girl, and if you switched the characters, it would be the same scene. Of course, I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss doesn’t have a girl to crash through a window to save her. She has to pick herself back up.
Regardless, both series have girls that are broken up with by the prince and immediately get into a relationship with the princes’ sibling. However, I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss is a straight romance – both in relationship and plot.
Whereas Magical Revolution has a variety of plot threads that give it complexity, I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss is always focused on the romantic relationship and the intrigues that spring up because of it.
The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent
Sei, a young office worker, is summoned to a new world. However, the people who summoned her to banish dark magic from the world only meant to summon one person they would call Saint. Instead, they summoned two, and Sei discovers that they actually like the other girl better.
Not really caring about that, she ends up making potions at a research institute using her newfound magic. Unfortunately, while she is unexpectedly talented at her work and happy doing it, she begins to think that she is indeed the Saint.
Unlike Magical Revolution that starts with a girl being romantically dumped, The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent is about a different kind of dumping. In this series, she is dumped by a kingdom when they accidentally summon two heroes.
However, both series follow those girls who go on to have a more fulfilling life with new comrades and a new purpose.
Furthermore, while both of these isekai anime start off rather light-hearted, they start to get more serious over time. However, The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent isn’t quite as dark as Magical Revolution.
Chillin’ in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army
Dariel is a dark soldier in the Demon King’s army – or rather, he was. After the son of the previous demon general took over, he swiftly fired Dariel for a lack of power and supposed usefulness.
Set adrift, Dariel rescues a girl from a monster in the woods and she takes him to her village. There, he discovers that he wasn’t actually a demon, but is a human – and an incredibly powerful one.
Now he pays the village back for all their kindness by helping them out.
Although Chillin’ in My 30’s follows a male main character, it, like Magical Revolution, starts with that character kind of having his whole life turned upside down. He is fired instead of broken up with, but like Euphillia, he finds a happier life with new friends and a potential lover almost immediately.
The big difference, however, is that Magical Revolution dedicates itself to serious issues within the kingdom and Chillin’ in My 30’s is about solving local issues, but they are easily solved. This means Chillin’ in My 30’s is more a light-hearted comedy with bouts of quickly concluded action where the main character was never under any threat of losing because he is very overpowered.
For Fans of Odd Couple Duos
Lycoris Recoil
In order to cut down on crime and terrorism, an organization called Direct Attack was formed. They take orphaned girls and turn them into agents that protect the country in the Lycoris program.
Takina is one gifted agent, but after a hostage situation leads to insubordination, she is transferred out of the main unit to a lower key branch of Lycoris ran out of a cafe.
Despite being paired with a famed, but more easy-going Lycoris prodigy Chisato while there, Takina is determined to get back into DA, but her new partner is determined to prove that there is more to life than just taking lives.
When you watch Anis’ intense interest in Euphillia and hide-the-pain cheerfulness, you can’t not see Chisato from Lycoris Recoil. They even look similar.
Both anime series follow the adventures of two opposite personalities, put together through circumstance. One reserved and dignified, one hyper and cheerful. However, while both anime series smack of shoujo ai, Lycoris Recoil lets it dwell in (very strong) subtext.
The big different between Magical Revolution and Lycoris Recoil is the setting. Magical Revolution is the standard medieval fantasy world isekai while Lycoris Recoil takes place in modern Japan. As such, one has action through swords and magic, the other has action through guns.
Reborn to Master the Blade – From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire
On his deathbed, Hero-King Inglis is visited by the goddess who gave him her blessing in his youth. He used it to build a mighty empire, but regrets that leadership had to take priority over his martial training.
Offering him a wish, he wishes to be reincarnated in order to devote himself to the life of a warrior.
She grants it, but when he awakens, he finds himself in the body of a baby girl.
Despite the setback, Inglis still maintains some power from his previous life as well as his memories. With his body growing stronger each day, he continues to hone his blade skills.
Although Reborn to Master the Blade is a gender-bender anime, the main character is reincarnated as a baby girl, and it quickly moves from the standard gender-bender anime tropes into being a lovely fantasy action anime in its own right.
Like Magical Revolution, the eccentric main character gets into various shenanigans, including kingdom-wide intrigue, with a side-kick that both compliments them as a friend and contains them as an eccentric person.
However, there isn’t really much girl’s love in Reborn to Master the Blade and it doesn’t take itself quite as seriously as Magical Revolution does. The main character is a battle maniac, and really all she wants to do is fight. That leaves very little room for intrigue.
Flip Flappers
Paprika and Cocona hold the keys to open the door where they can meet from their different times in a dimension called Pure Illusion.
In this dimension, they search for the Shard of Mimi which is said to grant any wish. However, finding it will not be easy.
Both Magical Revolution and Flip Flappers are isekai anime that follow the adventures of two girls with differing personalities who are close as both friends and potential romantic partners. However, while Magical Revolution is the standard medieval fantasy with swords and magic, Flip Flappers dwells distinctly in the realms of surrealism.
Both series look like they are fun and light-hearted stories, but they get pretty complex as they go on.
For Fans of Fantasy-Themed Girl’s Love
Otherside Picnic
After accidentally entering, Sorao finds herself in the desolate, and as she discovers, dangerous Otherworld. As she ponders whether to just die or not, she is saved by a girl named Toriko who is looking for her friend Satsuki who she believes is somewhere in this world.
After meeting, a friendship and partnership springs up as they explore the new reality before them.
While Otherside Picnic isn’t considered a true isekai anime since the girls can return to the modern world as they please, both Otherside Picnic and Magical Revolution follow the adventures of girl duos in another world.
While both have shoujo ai source materials, the Otherside Picnic anime is a little more withholding with the girl’s love, but it is still clearly there.
Both anime series have the rather unfortunate similarity of needing more than one season to really flesh out both the plot and the character relationships.
The Executioner and Her Way of Life
For years, the Lost Ones have come from the distant world of Japan to a fantasy land. Not even these Lost Ones know how or why they arrive there, but their immense powers only bring destruction.
In order to secure the safety of their world, Executioners are charged with exterminating these Lost Ones.
While on the job, Executioner Menou happens across Akari, a Lost One summoned by an ambitious king. However, she finds that the girl is immortal and cannot be killed. Traveling with Akari, Menou seeks a way to end her life.
Both Magical Revolution and The Executioner and Her Way of Life are isekai anime that follow female characters in their adventures and growing romantic relationship.
However, while Magical Revolution has shifting focuses, The Executioner and Her Way of Life is more focused on the main character journeying with a girl that she intends to find a way to eventually kill. Of course, feelings – and various intrigues – grow and get in the way of that goal.
Izetta – The Last Witch
After invading a neighboring country, Germania thrust Europe into war. Now they turn their eyes on a small nation of Elystadt, a campaign bolstered quickly by capturing the Elystadt princess named Ortfiné “Fine” Fredericka von Eylstadt.
While transporting her, Izetta, the last living witch, who was also being transported, breaks loose and Fine recognizes her from her own childhood.
These reunited friends now have a chance of turning the tides of war against the imperialist giant bearing down on their country.
While Magical Revolution takes place in your more standard medieval fantasy world with monsters and magic, Izetta The Last Witch has a different approach. The world is instead modernizing to a World War era and the titular witch is one of the last remnants of magic from a dying age.
While Magical Revolution and Izetta are similar in that they explore magic when combined with invention and technology, they are most similar in the relationship between the main characters. Both series follow a princess bound by duty to her country and a girl who is gifted with powerful magical abilities.
While Magical Revolution is very straightforward with the growing romantic nature of their relationship, Izetta leaves it to subtext.
For Fans of Debated Royal Succession
Bibliophile Princess
Ever since she was a child, Elianna Bernstein has preferred the company of books to people. As such, when she is proposed to by Crown Prince Christopher, she believes that she is just a temporary fiancee to protect the royal family from the schemes of other noble families.
Yet, when Christopher appears to be getting closer to another girl, Elianna looks up from her books and realizes that she is not as indifferent to him as she thought. What’s more, Christopher was never anything other than in love with her either.
Unlike Magical Revolution, the succession in Bibliophile Princess isn’t really in question, but as a shoujo romance between royalty, of course her worthiness as a fiancee is the topic of debate.
Both series follow, to some degree, the romantic lives of royalty. While romance plays a much larger part in the plot of Bibliophile Princess, both series really focus on what is expected of royalty in the way they act and who they form relationships with.
However, while Magical Revolution has its intrigue, Bibliophile Princess is often more focused on diplomatic and administrative issues in their kingdom.
Ranking of Kings
In this world, kings are ranked based on their power, skill, and how they treat their subjects.
Bojji is the first son and heir of powerful 7th ranking king, Bosse. However, while Bojji is good-natured, he is often mocked as a fool because he is cannot speak and they believe him to be deaf.
While not physically strong either, Bojji has a strength of heart that earns the affection and loyalty of many he crosses paths with, including his most recent friend, a jaded shadow creature who swears to always have Bojji’s back as he tries to become the best future king he can be.
While Anis is perfectly happy to let her younger brother be the heir, Ranking of Kings is all about how shocked and disappointed the eldest son is when his younger brother becomes king instead of him.
While Ranking of Kings has a distinctly younger looking art style, make no mistake that Ranking of Kings is a lot more brutal and bloody than it looks. That is part of its charm, really.
Both series follow the eldest royal of a family as they live their life rather lackadaisically until events happen that force them to come to terms with a difficult reality. However, Ranking of Kings is more about growing as a person and embracing your unique strengths through that story of kingdom intrigue.
