In order to preserve a growing Earth population, the AI has deemed that criminals and various by-products and pollutants should be sent to the Moon colonies.

After years of being Earth’s dumping ground, the children of the Moon have risen up and attacked Earth, destroying the new global lunar elevator, causing a massive loss of life on Earth and kicking off a war of rebellion.

For Jacob “Jack” Shadow, the son of the family that launched the lunar elevator project, he watches his family die in the lunar elevator attack and, vowing revenge, joins the military. Yet, the truth of his past waits for him on the Moon.

For Fans of AI Controlling Society

psycho pass anime

Psycho-Pass

In the 22nd century, the justice system has changed. The Sibyl System now determines the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for criminal intent. This has become known as their Psycho-Pass.

Once criminal intent has been identified, Inspectors like Akane Tsunemori are in charge of subjugating them.

However, this tough job is not without dangers. This is why Inspectors are paired with Enforcers, like Shinya Kougami, latent criminals with just the right amount of psychopathy to keep other criminals in their place.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Psycho-Pass

  • Futuristic society seems to be fine, for some, but at least some important decisions are left to an AI
  • Maybe letting a machine make decisions about human life is bad?
  • Unique, high tech guns and other smaller tech
  • Smaller scale missions are all feeding into unraveling a larger intrigue

Differences Between Moonrise and Psycho-Pass

  • Psycho-Pass is a futuristic police drama, so it is often cops solving crimes, and often the intrigue is building towards some larger reveal/arrest, not war.
  • Psycho-Pass is more about intrigue and less about action, as they are often investigating things and not fighting a war.
  • Psycho-Pass follows adult characters who are a bit grittier and more mature
tokyo 24th ward anime

Tokyo 24th Ward

On an artificial island in Tokyo Bay labeled as the Tokyo 24th Ward, a fire at a middle school changed the lives many, including three childhood friends, Ran, Kouki, and Shuuta.

Having drifted apart after the incident, they are brought together on the first anniversary of the fire when their phones ring simultaneously and they receive a call from Asumi, a girl that died in that fire, showing them a tragedy that will come to pass and asking them to choose the future.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Tokyo 24th Ward

  • A teen friend group endures a traumatic incident that will later thrust them into an action intrigue plot
  • Futuristic city where an AI sort of system controls/decides things for humans
  • Smaller missions are feeding into a larger intrigue involving the AI system that controls the city/planet.
  • Likable, color-coded characters that are stereotypes, but easy to like
  • Excellent animation and action, but occasionally frustrating plot.

Differences Between Moonrise and Tokyo 24th Ward

  • Tokyo 24th Ward is smaller scale in every respect since it takes place in one single city controlled by an experiential AI system, follows characters fighting smaller scale accidents/terrorism superhero-style, and isn’t about large scale war.
  • The AI has an important role in Moonrise, but isn’t a focus. The AI and the truth about it is fully the focus in Tokyo 24th Ward.

For Fans of Sci-Fi Military Action

aldnoah zero anime

Aldnoah Zero

Upon the discovery of a hypergate on the moon that could teleport humans to Mars, humanity became split. After years of warfare, an uneasy peace was forged between Martians and Terrans until the Martian princess was allegedly assassinated on Earth.

Inaho Kaizuka, a high schooler who witnessed the assassination, suddenly finds himself pulled into this interplanetary conflict. He had helped the princess escape assassination, and is now trying to keep her safe until she can secure the peace between their two planets.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Aldnoah Zero

  • An attack on Earth kicks off a war, and it was very much planned by some to kick off that war.
  • A series of teens get pretty much forced into the military with a very specific mission
  • Multiple women romantically, complicatedly interested in the relatively unremarkable main character.
  • Main character has a man on the opposing side that they fight against because they use more extreme means, but are doing so for the same desire for peace and equality.
  • Excellent animation and action, but occasionally frustrating plot.

Differences Between Moonrise and Aldnoah Zero

  • Aldnoah Zero is a mecha action anime, so the mobile suits are not quite as fluid and flexible in the action.
  • Aldnoah Zero is a “protect this important person who is crucial to stopping the war” sort of plat whereas Moonrise is a “go kill this person to stop the war” plot, at least at first.
86 anime

86

For years, the Republic of San Magnolia has been at war with the Giadian Empire. They were constantly plagued by their hordes of unmanned drones until the government created an unmanned solution of their own, finally able to wage their war without casualties.

However, that is not quite the truth. The “unmanned” combat weapons are actually used by those of the 86th sector of the Republic, but they are not considered even human.

This is the tale of both Shin, an 86er and battle commander, and Lena, their sympathetic handler who remotely commands the detachment from inside the city.

Similarities Between Moonrise and 86

  • The future is great, for some. It is also absolute trash for the people deemed to be “lesser” by a higher authority.
  • War is progressively ravaging multiple nations, and at least part of that war is against an organism created by mankind that is proving difficult to control.
  • Larger cast of easily likable characters that are made to suffer to varying degrees of severity.
  • Excellent sci-fi military action that is well animated and high quality in its CGI.

Differences Between Moonrise and 86

  • 86 is far more about its characters fighting a long-term war rather than going on a singular long-term mission to end the war.
  • 86 loves to make you like characters, and hurt you with the very real threat that they may die.
  • 86 is not a nation versus nation war, it is nations once at war now fighting self replicating AI robots, and losing.
  • 86 is not a humanoid mech anime, but they are using mobile machines for combat unlike Moonrise and its Engraves/SEED powers.
  • Moonrise touched on Sapientia’s plan for population control (via killing people in a war), but 86 is fully about the planned genocide of a group of people via frontline combat.
yakitori anime

Yakitori – Soldiers of Misfortune

In a future where trade federations have dominated the solar system and are constantly in conflict, a young man looking to escape his restrictive homeland of Japan decides to join the military.

On the recommendation of a military cook friend, Akira Ihotsu joins an orbital drop infantry unit that he discovers has a 70% casualty rate, dubbed Yakitori for how expendable they are.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Yakitori

  • A main character joins/is forced to join the military
  • High tech military weapons and dangerous combat in an otherwise cyberpunk world
  • Multi-national intimate strike squad of soldiers to bond with and maybe watch die.
  • Solid action, occasionally frustrating plot.

Differences Between Moonrise and Yakitori

  • Moonrise is about its large war/intrigue plot, Yakitori is about how much it sucks to be a soldier that is expendable.
  • Yakitori features a down on his luck guy who joins the military to leave his unhappy surroundings, not a rich kid forced into the military.
  • Yakitori doesn’t use its CGI with as much success in the animation, especially outside of action.
iron blooded orphans gundam anime

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

However, they soon find themselves under attack by Gjallarhorn who seek to assassinate the revolutionaries that threaten their agenda.

  • Inequality for Earth’s colonies is the major motivator for everything happening.
  • Dangerous singular mission where friends are made and lost along the way
  • Both series accent how shitty the world is for everyone not rich or on Earth.

Differences Between Moonrise and Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

  • Iron Blooded Orphans is a Gundam, so expect mobile suits when it comes to combat.
  • Iron Blooded Orphans is more about a journey to get a girl to a place and being dogged by frequent attacks along the way.
  • The main characters in Iron Blooded Orphans are underdog orphans without options other than to be child soldiers, not rich children forced into the military.
Full Metal Panic anime

Full Metal Panic

Specialized troops armed with state-of-the-art weapons, Mithril is an organization tasked with stopping terrorism and keeping the peace on earth. However, their success hinges on the Whispered, individuals that possess remarkable knowledge of machinery and devices.

Enter Sousuke Sagara who is tasked with protecting Whispered candidate, Kaname Chidori. In order to do so, he joins her in high school as a student. While Sousuke has a talent on the battlefield, it seems that doesn’t transfer as well to the classroom.

However, the enemies of Mithril are just beginning to make their move.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Full Metal Panic

  • Main/major characters who are of an advanced human evolution, giving them powers
  • Military sci-fi action plot where smaller battles are building up to large intrigue reveals
  • Romantic tension between the male main character and at least one woman.

Differences Between Moonrise and Full Metal Panic

  • Full Metal Panic is an alternate Earth where the cold war didn’t end, and follows a secret organization that works in the shadows to keep global stability besides, so it is not the same large scale, massive loss of life war between two nations story that Moonrise is telling.
  • Full Metal Panic is a mecha action anime, though they also have various other combat technology besides mobile suits.
  • Full Metal Panic is as much a school-set romantic comedy as it is a military sci-fi action anime.
  • Full Metal Panic has the more satisfying romantic tension, as it actually does something with it.
  • Full Metal Panic’s action is often motivated by its “protect the special girl” plot, which Moonrise has in the later half, but FMP has throughout.

terror in resonance anime

Terror in Resonance

The pair are soon linked to the terrorist attack on the nuclear facility by police.

Threatening more mayhem to come, it is up to the police to catch these terrorists. However, Sphinx has been very careful to never kill anyone with their attacks. Instead, they hope to use them to expose a secret government experiment and its cruelty.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Terror in Resonance

  • Human experiments that were the next evolution of humanity escaped their facility and are out in the wild doing stuff.
  • Human experiments start attacking things to work towards specific goals. Both shows also slowly reveal why they are doing these things.
  • The darker secrets of society are brought to light through the events of the show

Differences Between Moonrise and Terror in Resonance

  • Terror in Resonance is about small scale terror attacks in a fairly modern (not futuristic) Japan by two boys.
  • Terror in Resonance is lower action, but far more focused on exploring its characters and plot.
  • Terror in Resonance is not especially sci-fi or dystopian/cyberpunk.
Heavenly Delusion anime

Heavenly Delusion

Two young survivors, Maru and Kiruko, wander the wasteland and make money off Maru’s ability to kill these man-eaters with a touch. Together, they are searching for a place called Heaven that they both hope will hold the answers to the tragic burdens that they hold in their heart.

Similarities Between Moonrise and Heavenly Delusion

  • Human experiments that are, at least part of the time, living in a special facility away from everyone else.
  • Something happens, and those human experiments get loose, throwing the world into chaos as a by-product
  • Futuristic, dystopian setting with varying degrees of enshitification and technological advancement.
  • Some characters have mysterious powers despite most people not having them
  • The truth of things is slowly being unraveled throughout the series. Both are very much “you understand things, but only once you watched the entire show” sort of anime.

Differences Between Moonrise and Heavenly Delusion

  • Heavenly Delusion is very much a post-apocalypse series, whereas Moonrise is far more cyberpunk (high tech, class inequality) coded.
  • Heavenly Delusion is about two characters on a journey for different reasons. It is not a war intrigue story like Moonrise.
  • Heavenly Delusion is following the main characters’ stories, but is also fleshing that story out with an extensive, frequent flashback to different characters that gives more clarity to what is going on over time.
  • Heavenly Delusion is lower action, and what action it does have is often a bit more realistically displayed since they have limited weaponry to use.
