Operating in the shadows, an evil organization of invading aliens is working to take over Earth and wipe out humanity. While a group of brave heroes constantly fights back against them, everyone needs a chance to rest.
For one high-ranking general in the evil organization, he is very diligent with his work, but also takes his days off very seriously. During his time off, he often enjoys well-deserved rest by engaging in fun human activities like going to the zoo to see the pandas, eating ice cream from the convenience store, or doing a little shopping.
If you are perhaps a person stuck in a job that always devours your time, an anime about a villain getting normal time off may sting a bit more than such a wholesome anime should. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Mr. Villain’s Day Off, then head on down below.
Anime Like Mr. Villain’s Day Off
For Fans of Tough Guys Being Soft
The Way of the House Husband
The Immortal Tatsu is an legendary yakuza name, but after taking down a rival gang single-handedly, he disappears.
Now, he has reappeared as an apron-wearing, laundry-doing, bento-lunch-making househusband for his office-working wife.
Both Mr. Villain’s Day Off and The Way of the House Husband are about tough men, be they yakuza legends or still-active high-ranking generals in an evil organization, but the actual content of the both anime series is about these tough men doing super soft slice of life activities.
Mr. Villain’s Day Off is obviously about the normal and occasionally cute things he does on his days off while The Way of the House Husband is about a retired yakuza cleaning his home and making lunches for his office lady wife. So, different, yet similarly cute slice of life plots surrounding the off-time of tough men.
The Devil is a Part-Timer
Right on the verge of taking over the world, evil Demon Lord Satan was foiled by the hero Emilia and was forced to retreat through a dimensional portal.
He ends up in our modern world where he is without powers and without money. In order to pay his way, he gets a part-timer job slinging fast food.
Similar to how Mr. Villain’s Day Off is riffing off the evil organizations traditional to Tokusatsu or many traditional “super heroes versus super villains” sort of series, The Devil is a Part-Timer is riffing on the fantasy concept of an evil Demon Lord.
Instead of being yet another story about a hero going to defeat a demon lord, The Devil is a Part-Timer is about a demon lord that gets transported to our modern world, without his powers, and has to get a McJob/part-time fast food service job just to pay his bills.
Essentially, Mr. Villain’s Day Off and The Devil is a Part-Timer work with a similar concept of evil beings doing completely normal and occasionally cute things in a modern world despite having access to fantasy powers.
The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting
Tooru Kirishima is known as the Demon of the Sakuragi crime family due to his overly violent tendencies. Because of his skill and loyalty, he has been selected by the boss of the family for an important job – the job of babysitting the boss’ daughter.
While Mr. Villain’s Day Off doesn’t have much in the way of childcare outside of the villain’s interactions with Mugi and Sora, The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting knows the quickest way to make tough guys look and act cute is to put a child in their orbit.
While both Mr. Villain’s Day Off and The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting are about super strong, should-be-evil individuals doing relatively cute things, The Yakzua’s Guide to Babysitting is notably different as it is a childcare-focused series rather than the more aimless slice of life that Mr. Villain’s Day Off offers.
Sanrio Boys
Kouta Hasegawa is a completely normal high school student who likes his Pompompurin stuffed animal, a Sanrio character modeled after a Golden Retriever, which his grandmother gave him when he was young.
However, after being made fun of, he became ashamed of them. That all changes when he starts meeting other boys that like Sanrio characters.
Mr. Villain’s Day Off definitely seems like it has a main character who doesn’t know that it is uncommon for big tough men to like cute things rather than being about a man who just doesn’t care what people think. In that same vein, Sanrio Boys is about a variety of high school boys who know that liking cute Sanrio mascot characters, as a man, is not traditionally manly, but who bond over their shared love regardless.
If nothing else, Sanrio Boys is for people who just want more anime about men who enjoy cute things regardless of gender expectations. While not every character in Sanrio Boys is a tough guy, there are plenty of male stereotypes represented within – all of whom can and do enjoy cute mascot plushies.
For Fans of Inside Evil Organizations
Love After World Domination
Fudo Aikawa dons the mantle of Gelato Red, leader of a group of protectors that stand against an organization bent on world domination. Desumi Magahara is a fierce warrior in the ranks of that organization.
After first meeting, it was love at first sight for Fudo, and they agreed to go out.
However, their relationship must remain a secret, though that doesn’t mean they can’t make special moments for themselves.
Both Mr. Villain’s Day Off and Love After World Domination are twisting the same concept of evil organizations fighting Super Sentai good guy heroes, but the evil organization is also just made up of pretty average people who just work there.
Whereas Mr. Villain’s Day Off is a slice of life comedy about a what a normally scary villain does on his day off, Love After World Domination is a bit different. It is a romantic comedy between a the Red Ranger of a Super Sentai group and a female general in the evil organization he is fighting. They have to keep their love a secret, but make plenty of time to do cute couple stuff together.
Both series really emphasis that “we’re different outside of work” element about the characters, leading to similar comedy and cuteness.
Too Cute Crisis
Liza Luna is part of a destructive race of aliens, and when seeing Earth, she determines it should be destroyed. However, upon further inspection, Liza discovers a number of pleasures on Earth – primary among them, our pets!
After visiting a Cat Cafe and adopting a stray cat of her own, Liza spars Earth from destruction and gets caught in too cute pet shenanigans.
Both Mr. Villain’s Day Off and Too Cute Crisis are about alien invasions that are quietly being thwarted by the cuteness of Earth’s animals.
Mr. Villain’s Day Off is a little more subtle, but just like he was worn down and warmed up by pandas, Too Cute Crisis features a fiercesome alien scout who was charmed into submission by cats, dogs, and all variety of cute house pets.
Essentially, both series are slice of life comedies about what should be scary people enjoying cute things, and doing so cutely.
Miss Kuroitsu From The Monster Development Department
While Agastia is known to the world as a firm that specializes in theme parks, beneath the surface it is actually an evil organization bent on world domination.
Working in Agastia’s Monster Development Division, Touka Kuroitsu is a researcher who is the frequent victim of the eccentricities of her division seniors.
Each day she is responsible for meeting the ridiculous demands for new monster designs, giving abruptly scheduled presentations, and forced to accompany her monsters to fight the enemies of Agastia that thwart their evil designs of world domination – all for the sake of promotion that may never come.
While Mr. Villain’s Day Off shows what a villain in an evil organization that wants to conquer the world does on his day off, Miss Kuroitsu From The Monster Development Department is actually about the exact opposite. It is a workplace comedy about what a person does at her job creating monster fodder for the evil organization shes works for.
Both series are aimed at comedy from the exasperation of their main characters, showing how nice they are despite working for something evil. However, while Mr. Villain’s Day Off is soothing and iyashikei, Miss Kuroitsu From The Monster Development Department is more about comical work stress.
For Fans of Simply Daily Life Slice of Life
Astro Fighter Sunred
In the city of Kawasaki, the villainous General Vamp is constantly creating schemes for world domination with his minions only to be foiled by Sunred, the stalwart ally of justice that protects the city.
However, in reality, the heroic Sunred is a bit of a jerk. He is rude, violent, and mooches money off his girlfriend to play pachinko all day. Meanwhile, General Vamp and his (mostly harmless) minions are polite and conscientious.
Both Mr. Villain’s Day Off and Astro Fighter Sunred are about Super Sentai heroes and evil villains when they are not on the clock. Instead of being about those people on their off-time like Mr. Villain’s Day Off, Astro Fighter Sunred is about the red ranger and his nemesis from an evil organization who do lackluster battle in a small suburb.
Both series are slice of life comedies about the everyday lives of these people. However, the comedy in Astro Fighter Sunred often comes from how much of a jerk the Red Ranger is while the villain is a polite and nice citizen, which is not too dissimilar from Mr. Villain’s Day Off, its just that the villain and Super Sentai group are both nice citizens.
Play It Cool, Guys
Despite having different personalities, four boys in various stages of young adulthood all have one thing absolutely in common – clumsiness.
All four boys are naturally clumsy, but often cover their small slip-ups with a smooth recovery to keep the cool air they have cultivated around themselves in front of others.
A not insignificant part of the charm in Mr. Villain’s Day Off is that is he is a handsome, serious man who does often cute things. Play It Cool, Guys works with a similar concept by being about several separate male characters who navigate those clumsy moments that we all have in our lives with varying degrees of smooth cuteness.
You know those awkward moments like waving at someone who, as it turns out, was not waving at you? Play It Cool, Guys is all about handsome men cutely recovering from moments like those.
Life Lessons With Uramichi Oniisan
On the set of children’s show “Together with Mama,” 31-year-old Omota Uramichi is upbeat and cheerful to the children, but they are all ultimately put off as they get a taste of his adult angst and darkness that comes out in his cheerful voice.
Yet, failed gymnastics coach Uramichi isn’t the only one who is feeling the burden of a life passing him by. Others on the show suffer similar adult darkness.
While Mr. Villain’s Day Off is about the villain’s cute and wholesome life outside of work, Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is almost the exact opposite. It is about the chronic depression and disappointment in the adult life of a man at his job as a children’s show host.
Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is more of a dark comedy about depression, but it is a slice of life comedy regardless and a fun option for those who don’t mind things being a little less wholesome, but not truly disturbing either.
