After accidentally falling off a cliff, Mitsuha wakes up in a fantasy land.
Upon saving a girl from a wolf attack, she discovers that she didn’t die in her previous life, but rather accidentally ripped away a piece of a God’s power that lets her transport herself between that world and modern Japan.
With this magnificent power, she decides to take items from modern Japan to sell in the fantasy world. She has calculated that making 80,000 gold in the fantasy land will be enough to retire if she were to get trapped in either world forever.
Now begins her money-making schemes!
I enjoy when money is the motive of a fantasy anime since it is so simple and universal, and allows the main character to be occasionally scummy. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement, head on down below.

For Fans of Making Money
Spice and Wolf
For generations, Holo was a revered wolf deity that helped the local wheat harvest in exchange for tribute. However, as the villagers become more self-sufficient, they no longer need or even believe in her anymore.
During her annual festival, she sneaks into the cart of Kraft, a visiting merchant, hoping he will let her hitch a ride home.
While Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement dips its toes into the basics of running a business and the economics of a medieval society, Spice and Wolf digs a bit deeper into things. The main character is a merchant, and boy does Spice and Wolf go to great lengths to make you believe that.
However, while Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement is about the main character running her business and often getting into light-hearted shenanigans, Spice and Wolf is more about the pair happily traveling, trying to do their business, and getting pulled into more serious shenanigans.
The Dungeon of Black Company
Kinji has finally perfected his NEET lifestyle through shrewd money management. However, just when he is able to hang out for the rest of his life, he is transported to another world.
There, he is immediately shoved into a harsh mining job for a black company that cares only about profits and quotas. However, as the world’s laziest and most clever NEET, Kinji is determined to be a layabout.
Both Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement and The Dungeon of Black Company are isekai-like anime where the main characters aren’t heroes, but instead they just want to have enough money to live happily – something that is more and more relatable with each passing day.
However, while Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement is rather aboveboard with all Mitsuha’s money-making adventures, The Dungeon of Black Company follows a more comically scummy main character and the comically scummy things he does to make himself more wealthy.
Uncle From Another World
Takafumi’s uncle has been in a coma for 17 years after being hit by a truck when he was 17. However, after all this time, he has woken up.
As Takafumi discovers, while his uncle was in a coma in his world, he was transported to a fantasy land and became a great hero despite constantly being confused for an orc due to his appearance.
Now, Takafumi has to room with this man who needs to catch up on 20 years of gaming and anime culture while still possessing literal magical powers.
Both series are innately similar in that they are part of the new wave of isekai where the creators have to start being extra creative with it. They share a similar twist in that the main character can either travel back and forth between the modern world and a fantasy land, or the characters have just returned from a fantasy land.
Unlike Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement, Uncle From Another World doesn’t have its plot centered all around making money. However, a decent-sized part of it is how his nephew uses his Uncle’s magic from another world to make money in our world.
For Fans of Starting a Business
Management of a Novice Alchemist
After her parent’s death, young Sarasa was inspired to become an alchemist and graduated from the Royal Alchemist Academy.
Sacrificing friendships for hard work, she graduates with top marks and under the apprenticeship of a master alchemist.
This master helps her get set up with her first alchemy shop. It is in the middle of nowhere, but surrounded by top-notch alchemy ingredients.
While starting up a new shop is hard work, Sarasa is no stranger to working hard for her dreams.
Management of a Novice Alchemist, while not an isekai, is also about a girl who is starting her first business in a fantasy world. Unlike Mitsuha who is simply procuring goods and selling them, Management of a Novice Alchemist has a main character with a skill that she also has to hone.
Regardless, these intrepid young girls find that starting a business is rewarding, but also more difficult than it looks. You watch them overcome struggles, make friends, and earn money.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill
Alongside three other heroes, Mukouda Tsuyoshi was transported to a fantasy world to save a kingdom.
However, it becomes very apparent that he was summoned as a mistake when the only skill he has is to be able to open an interface to purchase food items from modern Japan.
Kicked out into the world, Tsuyoshi sets out into the world and his ability to make delicious dishes soon pays off. He attracted the attention of legendary wolf Fenrir who enjoyed the meal so much that he forms a pact with him to be his familiar.
Now employed as a merchant and adventurer, he travels and cooks to earn a living.
Campfire Cooking in Another World is, like Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement, an isekai anime where the main character isn’t gifted with magnificent combat abilities. However, they use the abilities they do have, which are both about having at least some access to our modern world, to their advantage.
While Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement is about making money through running a shop and other business venture, Campfire Cooking in Another World is all about cooking. Furthermore, it is often about combining ingredients he can buy from our world with fantasy ingredients that his familiar hunts down.
As Campfire Cooking in Another World is a food anime, it is similarly light-hearted and pretty low action like Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement.
By the Grace of the Gods
After leading a miserable life, Ryouma Takebayashi passes away at age 39.
Three deities, taking pity on him, reincarnate him into a fantasy world with an aptitude for magic, telling him to enjoy life and that they will always watch out for him.
With his newfound existence, he spends it studying slimes, amassing a slime army, and learning some magic, but he misses humanity. Being persuaded to join a group of travelers, Ryouma’s new world opens up for him.
Both series are isekai anime, and while By the Grace of the Gods frequently threatens to make its main character into an adventurer, his core interest outside of taming and creating new slimes is to run a laundry business.
By the Grace of the Gods and Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement are both isekai anime that are more laid-back and focused on main characters that want to make enough money to live comfortably without the help of anyone else.
For Fans of Improving A Fantasy World
Ascendance of a Bookworm
Motosu Urano loves books. She recently got her librarian certification and was about to enter her dream job when an earthquake caused her to be crushed by her collection of books.
She is reincarnated into a new world as the five year old daughter of a soldier. Unfortunately, in this world, books are reserved for the elite nobility.
What do you do when your station in life does not afford you access to books? Make your own.
Like Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement is about bringing items from our world into a fantasy land without completely ruining their society and economy, Ascendance of a Bookworm is more about recreating one specific thing from our world – books.
Like Mitsuha starts a shop, Ascendance of a Bookworm is all about a girl sent to a new world who commits herself fully to making books and making them accessible to everyone. While Ascendance of a Bookworm has a distinctly more wholesome main character when compared to Mitsuha’s motives, neither anime is about weak female main characters.
High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World
After their plane goes down, seven prodigy children wake up to find themselves in another world.
However, as none of them are just normal students, they set out to improve and take over this world through the use of their specialties.
Both of these series are isekai anime about people from another world either trying their best to make things better or trying their best to make some cash, but also not completely ruin their fantasy world at the level of technological advancement that it is at.
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement tries reasonably hard to not bring over too many items from our world that would completely upend the society or the economy, as well as not get Mitsuha burned as a witch. However, while High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World tries that at first, it kind of forgets… So things get a little bit out of control with what the prodigies start doing, but it is still an interesting watch.
Gate – Thus the JSDF Fought There
Japanese Self-Defense Force solider and otaku Youji Itami is in the Ginza district of Tokyo feeding his hobby one afternoon when a gate to another world opens and medieval soldiers flood modern day Japan.
While Itami, in conjunction with the local police, manage to save many civilian lives, his hero status forces him to go beyond the gate with his fellow soldiers to explore a mysterious new world filled with swords, magic, elves, and dragons.
Both Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement and Gate are about characters that can travel between a fantasy world and our modern world. However, while Mitsuha is the only one that can travel in Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement, Gate is about a gate that anyone can go through at any time.
While Gate, being about the Japanese Self-Defense Force, has distinctly more militaristic chest-beating, it also showcases how they are trying to improve life in the fantasy world, but not absolutely ravage their economy with goods from our world.
That said, Gate is more your standard action adventure isekai where the main character gets a harem of fantasy girls. Although, it doesn’t forget to give time to exploring the JSDF’s effect on the world.
