When they were children, Jinta and his demon-infused sister Suzune run away from their abusive home. They are taken in by the Sentinel of Kadono village, who raises them alongside his daughter.

While Jinta is raised to protect the village from demon threats, even becoming the new Sentinel for the new shrine priestess he is in love with, Shirayuki. He is devastated when demons attack the village resulting in Suzune turned into a full demon, Shirayuki dead, and him transformed into an ageless demon.

Knowing it is his duty to stop his sister, Jinta now travels Japan dealing with demonic threats as he tries to prevent the rise of the prophecized Demon God.
