Once a dark lord that trampled over humanity, Leonis is awoken from his thousand-year stasis by Riselia, a girl exploring the ruins where he was entombed with her maid.
When the three of them are attacked by beings plaguing humanity in this new age named Voids, Leonis decides to enroll in the Excalibur Academy to train with the future Holy Knights that he once fought against. Between his body only being that of a ten-year-old and the world having greatly changed from what he knew in the past, Leonis is determined to figure out what is going on in this new age as well as why these Voids seem to have some connection to him.
With a lot of potential, I can’t say this series does enough to be different from the other series that have a very similar premise. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, head on down below.

For Fans of Demon Lords At Magic Academy
The Misfit at Demon King Academy
After countless wars, Demon Lord Anos Voldigoad decided he would reincarnate into the future.
However, 2,000 years later, he has found that his descendants have become too used to peace and their magical powers weakened because of it.
Reincarnated with his full strength, the sheer magical power of Anos makes him a misfit at the Demon King Academy charged with educating the next generation in waning magical prowess.
Of all the other anime recommendations, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and The Misfit of Demon King Academy share the most fundamental similarities.
Both series are about demon lords who wake up in the far future of their world and discover things have changed to varying degrees. The plots of both series are centered around discovering why these changes occurred while the characters go to magic school and deal with various events there.
Both series also feature an immediately OP main character and a harem, though The Misfit of Demon King Academy keeps the harem more compact.
The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
The Demon Lord Varvatos is a power unrivaled. However, being at the top with no challenges and no one who is unafraid enough to be a friend is lonely, so he decides to reincarnate.
In his new life as a boy named Ard, he aims to have perfectly average powers, except that everyone in this new age has grown so weak.
While he remains overpowered, he has a singular goal of amassing meaningful friendships.
Like The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn a Typical Nobody is about a demon lord who is reincarnated into the far future of his world, and discovers that beings from his past are also there in different forms.
Unlike The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, The Greatest Demon Lord is about the demon lord wanting to live a low-key life where he can make friends. While they have that key difference in plot, these series actually still go a similar way. Both focus on the demon lords going to magic school, gathering a harem, and interacting or fighting with the people from their past. However, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy does take its plot more seriously.
The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
In his life as the world’s strongest onmyouji, Haruyoshi only pursued power. However, even his immense power couldn’t stand up to the well-played cunning that saw him betrayed and slain.
Using a technique he formed, he is able to reincarnated himself into another world. In this world, he, unlike the other members of his prestigious mage family, has no affinity for magic.
Haruyoshi, now Seika, the son of his father’s mistress, is shunned for his origins and lack of affinity. However, while he lacks in traditional magic, he still excels in spiritual power, allowing him use of his onmyouji techniques.
While once he pursued power, he will now seek greatness by honing his cunning.
While it takes a bit to get to the “demon lord” of it all in The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, it also follows an overpowered main character at magic school that uses knowledge from his past life and his overwhelming power to defend his growing harem.
Furthermore, both series become increasingly similar in the depth of intrigue going on at the school, melding the past with present issues. The main characters are also disguising their powers from a different era as magic from that time period rather than risk scrutiny by being able to use a non-standard form of magic.
Both The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World are actually great if you enjoy an overpowered main character who mostly does good things, but also has no problem with doing objectively evil things to everyone outside of his harem if it is more practical.
For Fans of Reborn In The Same World, But Far in The Future
Reborn to Master the Blade – From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire
On his deathbed, Hero-King Inglis is visited by the goddess who gave him her blessing in his youth. He used it to build a mighty empire, but regrets that leadership had to take priority over his martial training.
Offering him a wish, he wishes to be reincarnated in order to devote himself to the life of a warrior.
She grants it, but when he awakens, he finds himself in the body of a baby girl.
Despite the setback, Inglis still maintains some power from his previous life as well as his memories. With his body growing stronger each day, he continues to hone his blade skills.
The whole “demon lord going into the far future” thing is a small, but increasingly popular concept, but it doesn’t always have to be a demon lord. Reborn to Master the Blade shows that by reincarnating a heroic king into the far future instead.
Both The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and Reborn to Master the Blade center their plot around exploring how the world is very different from the past of the main characters and how it got that way. However, instead of watching the main character wield devastating magic like in The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, Reborn to Master the Blade is fully dedicated to a main character that is mastering sword skills. It also has a bit of a gender-bender element that isn’t much of a focus outside a few initial jokes.
The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest
When they are born, mages are each given a random and unchangeable crest that will effect their powers and potential.
Gaius, a man widely known as the strongest sage, reached the limit of his potential, but decided to reincarnate far into the future to attain a different crest. He is reborn as Mathias Hildesheimer thousands of years later and gets the crest he hoped to receive.
However, in this future, his crest has been slandered as the worst crest due to demons that have now infiltrated humanity and pull the strings in order to limit humanity’s magical potential.
Both The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest and The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy feature main characters that reincarnated into the future of their worlds and find that their new present has significant changes from the past.
While both characters are immediately overpowered, they use their power to both gather a harem of misfits at magic school and investigate why the world is the way it is now. However, The Strongest Sage With The Weakest isn’t about an evil being.
For Fans of Battle Harems
The Asterisk War
Ayato Amagiri just got accepted to an elite academy for Genestella – a new breed of humans with amazing skill. Through duels at this school, the students learn to better control their powers.
Unfortunately, due to some unfortunate peeping accusations, his new school life is off to a rough start.
Like The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, the world underwent a drastic change that essentially changed how civilization operated as well as introduced a monstrous menace for humanity to fight. However, whereas The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy is about waking up in a very different world, The Asterisk War simply has that as part of its history.
Both The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and The Asterisk War are about students at a magic academy where the main character isn’t especially interested in academics so much as he is in solving his own personal mystery. Regardless, events see him gather a harem of diverse girls that fight for and beside him.
Spirit Chronicles
When he was a child, Amakawa Haruto made a promise to his childhood friend to reunite. However, he could never fulfill that promise both because she had disappeared and because he was killed in a bus accident.
Now, his memories awaken in a young orphan named Rio who seeks revenge for his mother that was brutally murdered in front of him. Confused about these memories of Haruto’s life, Rio ends up saving the kidnapped young princess and awakening a special power in the process.
As reward for his heroism, he is granted a scholarship to the Royal Academy.
Similar to how “demon lord in the far future of their same world” is “isekai-adjacent,” Spirit Chronicles approaches similar isekai adjacency by being about a guy from modern Japan reincarnating into and sharing a body with a boy that was already alive in that world. However, instead of figuring out what happened to the world, Spirit Chronicles centers itself more on figuring out several character-focused mysteries as its plot.
Regardless, both series are fantasy anime with an OP main character who goes to magic school and gathers himself a tidy harem of cute anime girls. The action is great, the main characters are a little cold and calculating, and the harem is cutely designed.
World Break – Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman
At Akane Private Academy, students who possesses memories of their previous lives are trained to use astral arts that help defend humanity against monstrous beings called Metaphysicals.
These students, known as Saviors, are separated into two categories. Students who use their arts to summon offensive weapons and those who are able to wield magic to fight.
For Moroha Haimura, when he enters school he meets a girl who claims she was his little sister in previous life where he was a heroic prince capable of slaying entire armies with his sword skill. However, another girl claims to know him from a completely different past life where he was a dark lord wielding destructive magic and saved her from slavery. With his past lives effecting his present future, which will hold the most sway over who he is today?
While they go about it in different ways, both World Break and The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy base their present plots around events that happened long ago. However, instead of reincarnation, World Break simply uses the concept of past lives to effect the characters’ present powers.
Both The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and World Break actually present interesting concepts, but in the end, they are both just pretty standard fantasy battle harem anime.
