Ray White is the first commoner to be admitted to the prestigious Arnold Academy of Sorcery. As such, he is also the immediate target of contempt by some of the nobles at the academy.
However, what they don’t know is that Ray’s real identity is the current Iceblade Sorcerer, one of only a few powerful magic wielders that once led their country to victory.
Despite being the current holder of such a legendary power, Ray just wants to live an ordinary school life that he hasn’t been able to experience until now.
This series has a premise that has been done hundreds of time, and it does try to set itself apart. However, if you like this series, you like it for what it is because what it tries to do to set itself apart doesn’t really pan out. Anime Like The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World
For Fans of Overpowered People Wanting to Live Normal Lives
The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
The Demon Lord Varvatos is a power unrivaled. However, being at the top with no challenges and no one who is unafraid enough to be a friend is lonely, so he decides to reincarnate.
In his new life as a boy named Ard, he aims to have perfectly average powers, except that everyone in this new age has grown so weak.
While he remains overpowered, he has a singular goal of amassing meaningful friendships.
Both The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World and The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical nobody are built on the same basic foundation of guys that just want to make friends. However, they go about it in different ways.
Ray never got a chance to live a normal life since he was raised by soldiers, Ard had to reincarnate himself in order to get his shot at a normal youth. Regardless, both series have main characters with magnificent power that they hide in order to make friends. However, The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn a Typical Nobody does lend some time to him being kind of socially awkward.
Trapped in a Dating Sim – The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs
After starving himself to beat an otome game for his sister, office worker Leon falls down the stairs and dies. When he awakens, he is a young son of a minor noble that wasn’t featured in the game.
Looking to live quietly as a nobody “mob” character, he is soon saddled with an arranged marriage he is against where he decides to use his knowledge of the game to get out of the match and reach for his own happiness.
While The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World has Ray become overpowered through ability, Trapped in a Dating Sim has its main character be overpowered – at first – with knowledge because it is an isekai, and then had him become actually overpowered with the special item that his insider knowledge led him to go get.
Regardless, both series focus on main characters that are strong, but just want to live a normal life. As this is anime, of course neither of them do. As they go about getting pulled into incidents that require their power, they also gather the attention of a number of girls.
The Eminence in Shadow
Like most kids, Kagerou wanted to be a hero, but unlike most kids, he never grew out of that phase. He constantly trained his body to achieve it. In modern Japan, he was unable to achieve that goal, understanding that he could never reach enough power to be the type of hero he wanted to be.
However, when he was reborn in a new world, he pretends to be just another character in the world. He recruits people into his organization, Shadow Garden, and decides to target a sinister cult that is lurking in the shadows that he wishes to occupy.
While they are innately similar in that both series follow overpowered main characters who hide their powers as they go to magic school, The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World and The Eminence in Shadow progress differently.
The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World generally plays the set up straight, using the intrigue of his powers and how he got them to keep you interested. However, The Eminence in Shadow, as an isekai series, twists things by making the main character a chunibyou. He thinks his minions are just humoring him, but he actually is fighting a shadow organization with his magnificent powers.
For Fans of Magic Schools
The Irregular at Magic High School
After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over.
At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.
Both series follow the main characters and their various adventures in a magic school.
Like in The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, the main character in The Irregular at Magic High School is discriminated against, but this time, it is for being weak. However, he is not weak, they just can’t accurately measure his magic.
While both main characters are unpopular with the masses, they of course act heroically and endear themselves to a whole bevy of women. However, while The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World is obviously harem, The Irregular at Magic High School is most often focused on how much his sister loves him.
Seven Knights Revolution – Hero Successor
In its darkest hour, valiant heroes fought the forces of Destruction to protect the world. While their deeds have become legend, their powers have not faded from the world.
After the passing of each hero, their powers were imparted to a successor to continue fighting the remnants of Destruction.
One of the successors, Faria, saves an ordinary boy named Nemu one day, who then in turn awakens the power of a hero and becomes a successor himself. However, his hero power is one that is unknown to history.
Both The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World and Seven Knights Revolution are both magic school anime that most people watch and then forget about because they don’t do a lot to remain memorable in the long term. However, what makes them so innately similar is that they create worlds where magnificent magical power can be passed to a successor.
However, while The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World shows Ray interacting with the person he inherited the power from, Seven Knights Revolution puts more emphasis on the current holders of the power interacting with each other.
The Misfit of Demon King Academy
After countless wars, Demon Lord Anos Voldigoad decided he would reincarnate into the future.
However, 2,000 years later, he has found that his descendants have become too used to peace and their magical powers weakened because of it. Reincarnated with his full strength, the sheer magical power of Anos makes him a misfit at the Demon King Academy charged with educating the next generation in waning magical prowess.
While The Misfit of Demon King Academy is about a demon lord reincarnating himself in the future of his world, he, like Ray, uses that to go to magic school despite both him and Ray both being so proficient in magic, they could teach at the school.
In both series, the main characters manage to a get on the bad side of some students, but absolutely stomp them with their overwhelming power, ultimately attracting the attention of at least one member of their future harem.
However, while they both are technically focused on events happening within the school, The Misfit of Demon King Academy does have some further intrigue going on in the world that the main character is unraveling.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight
A certain selection of people, known as Blazers, are able to manifest their souls as weapons. To harness these powers, a number of schools have been established to teach these people how to use them.
Ikki Kurogane is an aspiring Mage-Knight, but unfortunately is also one of the lowest ranked Blazers around. However, there may be more to his powers than meets the eye.
While the powers in Chivalry of a Failed Knight aren’t the more traditional form of magic that you see in The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, it is still very much a “magic school” anime in every respect.
Like The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, the main character enters his magic school and is immediately discriminated against. Not for his commoner status like Ray, but for his general weak rating. However, both series have them become close with a fiery red-haired girl with a more obviously powerful ability.
Both series also have a harem feel about them, though they both utilize an obvious “main girl” among the others.
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor
Sistine is a dedicated student at the magical academy where she hones her skills. She eventually hopes to solve the great mystery of the Sky Castle, but when her teacher retires, the replacement, Glenn Radars, turns out to be a lazy bastard.
How is it that this incompetent man was hand-picked as the best magician in the academy?
Ray is very obviously strong enough to be a teacher at his school. He was even raised around a fair few of his actual teachers. So Akashic Record of Bastard Magic Instructor is like if Ray was older and became a teacher.
Both series take place in magic school and have a guy that is occasionally silly, but also wildly powerful. In order to not raise too many questions about their past, they often hide this power even when not hiding it would make things easier for them.
For Fans of Helping Your Fantasy Harem of Girls
The Wise Man’s Grandchild
After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin.
However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew into an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.
Both series are about young men raised away from society that decide to go to magic school even though their magic abilities are already top-tier.
Both series are about the main character attracting a harem of girls and becoming invested in their problems. However, The Wise Man’s Grandchild has the added twist of the main character, because he was raised in the wilderness, having rather poor social skills.
The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
In his life as the world’s strongest onmyouji, Haruyoshi only pursued power. However, even his immense power couldn’t stand up to the well-played cunning that saw him betrayed and slain.
Using a technique he formed, he is able to reincarnated himself into another world. In this world, he, unlike the other members of his prestigious mage family, has no affinity for magic.
Haruyoshi, now Seika, the son of his father’s mistress, is shunned for his origins and lack of affinity. However, while he lacks in traditional magic, he still excels in spiritual power, allowing him use of his onmyouji techniques.
While once he pursued power, he will now seek greatness by honing his cunning.
The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World and The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World both have overpowered magical abilities that are not very common in their worlds. As The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist is an isekai, his magical abilities are based on the magic he used in his previous life, but he disguises them to not raise suspicions.
So, alongside being magic school anime, they also both have main characters who hide their magnificent abilities, but when they do use them, end up adding more members to their harem of talented female students.
If you wanted a “OP main character who goes to magic school and gets a harem” anime where the main character uses their powers more frequently then the sparse few times that Ray does, this is it.
The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest
When they are born, mages are each given a random and unchangeable crest that will effect their powers and potential. Gaius, a man widely known as the strongest sage, reached the limit of his potential, but decided to reincarnate far into the future to attain a different crest.
He is reborn as Mathias Hildesheimer thousands of years later and gets the crest he hoped to receive. However, in this future, his crest has been slandered as the worst crest due to demons that have now infiltrated humanity and pull the strings in order to limit humanity’s magical potential.
As is pretty popular in fantasy anime recently, The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest is about a powerful main character that decides to reincarnate to get a different power. Like in The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World, he decides to go to magic school despite having a better grasp over his power than most other students, and once there is discriminated against for his differences.
As both main characters are powerful and nice, they attract themselves a harem and unwind the intrigues going on in their world.
