Far to the north, the Demon Lord used Hell’s Gate to invade the human realm. However, he was stopped by legendary sword wielding hero Shion and his companions.
While the portal was sealed, the seal was incomplete and now with it weakening, the demons have begun to attack again. Worried about his village, the young perverted farmer Touka Scott dug a series of pitfall traps for protection around town. Unfortunately, legendary hero Shion finds one of these traps, falls in, and dies.
Trying to cover up the accident, Touka buries the hero secretly in the forest. While that was to be the end of it, Touka’s soul is taken from his body and stuffed into Shion’s rotting corpse by Shion’s companion and necromancer, Anri Haynesworth. Now, he is forced to travel to Hell’s Gate in order to attempt to seal the portal for good and save the world.
While it is never going to be the best anime, I can really appreciate that The Legendary Hero is Dead never tries to take itself seriously. It is the stupid and lewd comedy that makes it great. Konosuba
On his way back from buying a new game, Kazuma Satou died a pathetic death.
However, he awakens before the Goddess Aqua who gives him two choices: go to heaven or reincarnate into an actual fantasy world. Naturally, the gamer picks the fantasy world.
Now, Kazuma must deal with defeating an evil demon king, useless party members, and paying living expenses.
What Konosuba is to isekai adventures, The Legendary Hero is Dead is to the standard shounen adventure. Both series have pretty simple, traditional set ups – a guy sent to another world, a boy forced to become a hero – and then it completely twists that towards comedy early and often.
You could call both series harem anime, and The Legendary Hero is Already Dead feels a bit more traditionally harem, but neither show is traditionally harem either due to the degenerate nature of the protagonist.
Both series focus on comedy and jokes above anything else, and it is why people watch them. There isn’t much else aside from the fun jokes.
Ixion Saga DT
While playing an MMO, Kon thinks he lucks out when he receive a request from a female character in the game, hoping to parlay that into getting himself a girlfriend.
However, when he accepts, he is transported to the world of Mira where he accidentally saves the young princess by landing his computer chair on her attacker.
With no idea how to get home, Kon joins the princess as part of her honor guard as she travels on her way to an arranged marriage in order to save her country.
While The Legendary Hero is Dead dares to not be an isekai in an industry bursting full of them now, Ixion Saga DT is an older isekai before the wave and when the concept was still somewhat original. However, what these two anime series share is a particular love for silliness and never taking themselves too seriously despite threatening to have a serious story line.
Both series follow main characters who sort of accidentally become heroes, but they are still the scummy, silly sort of boys they were before that. As such, it sort of fuels the comedic misadventures that go on around them.
Essentially, both series are good for a solid laugh, but do have a plot they causally follow as well.
Combatants Will Be Dispatched
On Earth, the villainous Kisaragi Corporation has finally conquered everything, but they have their eye on the entire universe. Having finally created a transporter, they send agent Roku-gou to the kingdom of Grace where he is to infiltrate and eventually conquer the kingdom for the corporation.
Of course, to ensure the success of one of their more disposable agents, they send with him Alice, an exceptional android, to make sure the mission is carried out.
Finally arriving, Roku-gou and Alice end up infiltrating the inner circle of the kingdom and helping them secure victory against an invading Demon Lord.
Both The Legendary Hero is Dead and Combatants Will be Dispatched work with a similar concept of “What if the hero was degenerate and scummy?”
While The Legendary Hero is Dead has a pervert become a zombie version of the hero,. Combatants Will be Dispatched follows a scummy guy serving an evil corporation as a disposable pawn for a paycheck. Neither series has the main characters acting traditionally heroic, and that is often the comedy of the series. However, The Legendary Hero is Dead more frequently uses sexual comedy.
For Fans of The Hero is Flawed
Is This a Zombie?
One night, Ayumu is killed by a serial killer. Just as suddenly, he is brought back to life by a necromancer.
To further complicate things, he also accidentally puts on a magical girl uniform and gains her powers. While she searches for a way to get her powers back, he is forced to fight evil in her stead.
Most obviously, both The Legendary Hero is Dead and Is This a Zombie are about main characters that were revived by a necromancer. Now living as a zombie, and because they got in the way of somebody else, both main characters inherit another character’s mission and have to fulfill that.
As both are comedy anime with a few harem sensibilities, the only real difference is the setting. Is This a Zombie is set in the modern day and is more about fighting creatures than a heroic quest.
Cautious Hero – The Hero is Powerful But Overly Cautious
In the divine realm, Gods and Goddesses are assigned worlds in peril to summon heroes to guide on their quest to save those worlds.
The Goddess of Healing, Ristarte, is assigned a difficult S-class world and told to pick a hero to defeat the Demon King. While her choices are underwhelming, one low level hero with super stats catches her eye!
Seiya Ryuuguuin is indeed a powerful hero, but he also has the problematic quirk of being overly cautious. His desire to stay on the safe side, over-preparing and over-training for all encounters, is a source of frustration for all.
Both series focus on heroes that are imperfect and not what people expected. However, while Touka is a bit of a powerless degenerate, Seiya is actually a competent hero, he just runs away frequently to train and over-prepare.
Both series are fantasy comedy anime, and actually pretty good comedies. The heroes are flawed, but likable, and they wedge quite a few lewd sexual jokes into both series.
Senyuu
It has been a thousand years since the demon lord was sealed away by the legendary hero, Creasion. However, when the demons return, it is decided that the demon lord would soon return as well.
Now it is up to the great hero’s descendants – all 75 of them – to seal him away again. Unfortunately, most of their skills are not what you would call top-notch.
Both The Legendary Hero is Dead and Senyuu are about heroes that are not quite as perfect and heroic as you would expect. The Legendary Hero is Dead has some guy being the hero while in his rotting zombiefied corpse and Senyuu follows the disappointing and often quirky descendants of a legendary hero that now have to try and save the world.
Both are comedy anime aimed at fantasy misadventures. However, Senyuu leaves out all the sexual comedy for the most part and focuses just on the quirky, flawed characters.
For Fans of Ecchi Comedy Adventures
Ayakashi Triangle
The spiritual creatures of Ayakashi are invisible to most people, but as children both Suzu Kanade and Matsuri Kazamaki discover they can see them. For Kazamaki, he comes from a long line of exorcists that destroy powerful Ayakashi. For Kanade, she is an Ayakashi medium, a rare individual whose vitality attracts Ayakashi.
After discovering Kanade’s power, Kazamaki decides to take up his grandfather’s role as exorcist to keep her safe. However, after one encounter with the King of Ayakashi, Kurogane, who had targeted her, Kazamaki finds that he has been turned into a girl!
Still following his mission, Kazamaki and Kanade try to find a way to turn Kazamaki back into a boy again.
Both The Legendary Hero is Dead and Ayakashi Triangle feature men who are no longer technically themselves. Touka was placed in the zombified body of the dead hero and Kazamaki was gender-bent into a woman by a demon.
So while both series are about the main characters trying to fix that situation by adventuring or, more so in Ayakashi Triangle’s case, fighting, both series often retreat to ecchi comedy to keep things lighter in tone.
KamiKatsu – Working for God in a Godless World
As his father is the leader of a cult religion, Yukito Urabe is often at the mercy of his whims. One whim sees him tossed into the ocean with the belief that their god, Mitama, will save him. As he drowns, Yukito wishes to be reborn in a world without gods and religion.
His wish comes true when he wakes up in a world completely devoid of religion, but learns that the government carries out an end-of-life system where people regularly are killed and those who do not wish to be killed voluntarily toil away in isolated villages until they are taken by force to be executed.
After Yukito’s new friends from one isolation camp are taken to be forcefully executed, he awakens Mitama with a prayer who descends from the sky and annihilates anyone that hurt him and his friends.
Both The Legendary Hero is Dead and KamiKatsu are fantasy series that never let themselves be too serious, or at least don’t stay serious for very long. When they do adjourn for jokes, those jokes are often very sexually driven, though KamiKatsu takes things a lot further.
While KamiKatsu is different in that it is technically an isekai anime, it also does this thing where it takes itself seriously for a bit, but then undermines all of that with a bunch of degenerate jokes. As such, it is a little unclear sometimes if it is actually a comedy anime like The Legendary Hero is Dead clearly always is.
Fairy Tail
While looking to enhance her magic, celestial mage Lucy meets an energetic fire mage named Natsu. After finding out he is a member of the famous wizard guild Fairy Tail that she has long admired, the pair travel home so Lucy can join.
Together with her new guildmates, Lucy and Natsu embark on adventures to help people, make money, and explore their vast magical world.
There is quite a bit that about The Legendary Hero is Dead that feels quite a bit like Fairy Tail. From the type of causal adventure-based story-telling, the random ecchi comedy, and even to how the characters are designed.
However, the big difference is that while Fairy Tail can be silly, it does have its serious moments. It know when to put the comedy away, and The Legendary Hero is Dead never does that, even in its most serious moments.
