In his life as the world’s strongest onmyouji, Haruyoshi only pursued power. However, even his immense power couldn’t stand up to the well-played cunning that saw him betrayed and slain.
Using a technique he formed, he is able to reincarnated himself into another world. In this world, he, unlike the other members of his prestigious mage family, has no affinity for magic.
Haruyoshi, now Seika, the son of his father’s mistress, is shunned for his origins and lack of affinity. However, while he lacks in traditional magic, he still excels in spiritual power, allowing him use of his onmyouji techniques.
While once he pursued power, he will now seek greatness by honing his cunning.
While this is the standard “OP MC goes to magic school and gets a harem” isekai anime, I was continuously impressed by how it still managed to make that tired formula fun to watch by having the main character work on his cunning. Anime Like The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
For Fans of Onmyouji Powers
Twin Star Exorcists
Parallel to our world is Magano where the Kegare dwell. Exorcists are sent in to deal with these monsters and cleanse impurities.
One day, a talented young exorcist named Benio is returning to Tokyo in order to meet with the Exorcists Union. On the road, she meets a young exorcist named Rokuro. After seeing some kids being plagued by Kegare, Benio rushes in and drags Rokuro with her. There, she discovers he has skill to rival her own, but refuses to fight.
Being paired up by the head exorcist, they are lauded as the Twin Star Exorcists and prophesied as the future parents of the reincarnation of the Abe no Seimei, who will cleanse the world of Kegare.
If you couldn’t get enough of the onmyouji powers in The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, then Twin Star Exorcists offers up more of that, but with more of a shounen action style story.
Both series are onmyouji-themed and stuffed full of action, but while The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World often treats onmyouji powers as a form of summoning, Twin Star Exorcist is more focused on tools and talismans.
Tokyo Ravens
Spiritual magic once helped Japan launch themselves into World War II, but the war was lost after an onmyouji caused the Great Spiritual Disaster that still plagues Tokyo to this day. As a result, the Onmyou Agency was established to combat the demons.
These days, spiritual powers have declined, and this is the case with Harutora, a young man tasked with protecting the reincarnation of the Great Disaster’s creator. However, when an an onmyouji attempts to recreate the Great Spiritual Disaster, he rises to the occasion to try and stop them.
If you enjoyed the onmyouji elements of The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World as well as the action and cute girls, Tokyo Raven does them all a bit more refined.
As Tokyo Ravens isn’t an isekai anime set in a fantasy-inspired land, it instead showcases onmyouji magic when combined with more modern aspects of our world. That said, both series really shine best when they have their main characters fighting as the magic is really the star of the show.
Jujutsu Kaisen
In order to gain more power, demons search for fragments of the legendary demon Sukuna to consume them.
One day, Yuuji Itadori, who just lost his grandfather, learns of this as he saves his school friends from being consumed by demons after they break the seal on one of the body parts of Sukuna that was at their school.
In order to stand a chance, he eats it, revealing himself as a rare vessel that can utilize and control the curse of Sukuna, meaning when he dies, Sukuna’s curse dies with him.
While Jujutsu Kaisen is more your standard shounen battler, like The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, it is onmyouji magic-themed. Everything from the talismans to the summons come into play as well as a variety of other techniques.
In both series, while Jujutsu Kaisen features more interesting characters, the real highlight is the action scenes. They both do them very well, though Jujutsu Kaisen has more of a darker tone.
For Fans of Letting Someone Else Be The Hero and Working From The Shadows
The Eminence in Shadow
Like most kids, Kagerou wanted to be a hero, but unlike most kids, he never grew out of that phase. He constantly trained his body to achieve it. In modern Japan, he was unable to achieve that goal, understanding that he could never reach enough power to be the type of hero he wanted to be.
However, when he was reborn in a new world, he pretends to be just another character in the world. He recruits people into his organization, Shadow Garden, and decides to target a sinister cult that is lurking in the shadows that he wishes to occupy.
Both The Eminence in Shadow and The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World are isekai anime where the main character is reincarnated into a new world with their old memories and skills still intact. However, due to events in their previous life, they want to live their life under the radar despite impressive skill.
Both series enjoy their big action and magnificent magic moments as well as have some harem elements. You also watch them do a not insignificant amount of manipulating and planning in order to maintain their low-key lifestyle.
Reborn to Master the Blade – From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire
On his deathbed, Hero-King Inglis is visited by the goddess who gave him her blessing in his youth. He used it to build a mighty empire, but regrets that leadership had to take priority over his martial training.
Offering him a wish, he wishes to be reincarnated in order to devote himself to the life of a warrior.
She grants it, but when he awakens, he finds himself in the body of a baby girl.
Despite the setback, Inglis still maintains some power from his previous life as well as his memories. With his body growing stronger each day, he continues to hone his blade skills.
Both of these series are about characters who were reborn and decided they wanted to live lives that were different from their previous one, despite retaining their memories from their previous life.
In The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, he wants to use cunning in order to not be betrayed like he was when he only pursued power. In Reborn to Master the Blade, his desire is more simple – he wants to be a warrior instead of a king. Although, Reborn to Master the Blade is notably different in that it has him reborn as a woman.
Trapped in a Dating Sim – The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs
After starving himself to beat an otome game for his sister, office worker Leon falls down the stairs and dies. When he awakens, he is a young son of a minor noble that wasn’t featured in the game.
Looking to live quietly as a nobody “mob” character, he is soon saddled with an arranged marriage he is against where he decides to use his knowledge of the game to get out of the match and reach for his own happiness.
Both of these isekai anime have the more unique twist of having the main character actually not wanting to become a big hero. Instead, they just want to live a nice life and pursue their interests without having the responsibilities that come with fame.
However, while The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World has the main character actively manipulating things so that he isn’t the center of attention, after awhile in Trapped in a Dating Sim, the main character gets swept up into being a main character.
For Fans of Being Overpowered at Magic School
The Irregular at Magic High School
After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over.
At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.
If what you enjoyed about The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World was how the main character was pretty much the strongest person at his school despite not standing out so much, The Irregular at Magic High School is very much that.
Both series are set in magic high schools where the main character has a tremendous amount of power, but it can’t be measured by the traditional means they measure that skill. However, The Irregular at Magic High School is a bit more detailed in its magic system and dedicated to explaining that. The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World is more focused on simple action and his powers are easily explained to us, the audience.
The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World
Ray White is the first commoner to be admitted to the prestigious Arnold Academy of Sorcery. As such, he is also the immediate target of contempt by some of the nobles at the academy.
However, what they don’t know is that Ray’s real identity is the current Iceblade Sorcerer, one of only a few powerful magic wielders that once led their country to victory.
Despite being the current holder of such a legendary power, Ray just wants to live an ordinary school life that he hasn’t been able to experience until now.
This isn’t the best way to sell a potential anime recommendation, but The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World is like a less detail-oriented The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World.
Essentially, the Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World is a magic school anime about an overpowered main character that doesn’t want to stand out, but does ends up helping his harem of powerful female friends. However, it doesn’t have the variety of onmyouji powers that made The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World stand out.
Spirit Chronicles
When he was a child, Amakawa Haruto made a promise to his childhood friend to reunite. However, he could never fulfill that promise both because she had disappeared and because he was killed in a bus accident.
Now, his memories awaken in a young orphan named Rio who seeks revenge for his mother that was brutally murdered in front of him. Confused about these memories of Haruto’s life, Rio ends up saving the kidnapped young princess and awakening a special power in the process.
As reward for his heroism, he is granted a scholarship to the Royal Academy.
Like The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, Spirit Chronicles is an isekai anime where the main character retains memories from their previous life. Spirit Chronicles is a bit different in that the isekai’d character is just inside the body of someone who was already in that world. However, both isekai’d main characters do have encounters with people from their previous life that have also be reincarnated.
Both anime have their main character attend magic school, be fairly overpowered there, and gather themselves a harem of talented girls.
