While she has long been a shut-in, vampire Terakomari Gandesblood is dismayed to learn that her father bragged about her to the vampire queen, and she has somehow now been appointed as a commander in the Mulnite Imperial Army.
While Komari isn’t actually that powerful due to finding blood repulsive, she needs to project strength or risk being killed by her subordinates in a power-grab. Her weakness and mediocrity is often hidden through bravado and the help of her trusty maid, Villhaze, but can she bluff her way to success?
What looked like it was going to a cute comedy turned out to have some teeth to it! If you are looking for more anime recommendations like The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, head on down below.

For Fans of Fantasy Creature Shut-Ins
Ms. Vampire Who Lives in My Neighborhood
In Akari’s neighborhood, there are rumors of an ageless girl that only comes out at night and lives in a mansion in the forest.
While seeking out this girl, Akari grows lost in the woods and is saved by the girl of rumor. It turns out the girl is a vampire named Sophie. She orders to blood online and avoids attacking humans.
Akari, a connoisseur of dolls, is instantly charmed by her doll-like appearance and moves in.
It seems that vampires make good shut-ins because that is what The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Ms. Vampire Who Lives in My Neighborhood have in common.
Both series follow a vampire who would rather just stay inside their room all day and lounge, but are constantly drawn out by their companion. Of course, Ms. Vampire Who Lives in My Neighborhood is a cozy slice of life comedy and not much else, which differs greatly from the moments of actual intriguing plot and action found in The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess. Both series do love their yuri bait, though.
Otaku Elf
Koito Koganei is a teenager who serves as a shrine maiden to the Takamimi Shrine as her family has always has. Alongside normal shrine maiden duties, she is also charged with taking care of the deity enshrined there.
Elda, an immortal elf summoned by Tokugawa Ieyasu, has lived in the shrine for 400 years. However, over that time, she has grown afraid of going outside and fallen deeply in love with games, anime, and other otaku hobbies.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Otaku Elf are about shut-ins who are also fantasy creatures. The titular main characters would rather stay in their rooms because they are not confident in their powers or confident around people.
However, unlike Terakomari who has legitimate power that she can bring to bear, Elda was mistaken for a god when she is just a long-living, otherwise powerless elf woman summoned to this world. This means Otaku Elf is distinctly a slice of life comedy, but it still shares themes of building confidence in yourself with The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess.
Gabriel Dropout
After graduating high school in Heaven, angels are sent down to Earth to guide humans down a righteous path. Heaven had high hopes for Gabriel, the top of her class. However, when she descended, she ended up skipping her duties and getting addicted to online games.
Like The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, Gabriel Dropout follows a fantasy creature who becomes a shut-in. This time, she isn’t a vampire, but an angel who abandoned her duties to help humanity in order to feed her crippling MMO addiction.
As is more traditional for anime about fantasy creature shut-ins, Gabriel Dropout is a slice of life comedy as well as a Cute Girls Doing Cute Things anime. However, much of the comedy comes from how wholesome and upstanding if not naive the demons are and how scummy the angels are. So maybe not always cute girls doing cute things if they can make a joke.
Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero
Ten years ago, the hero Max and his adventuring party defeated the Demon Lord. While defeated, the Demon Lord slumbered to regain his power, but in his haste to face Max again, wakes up in a small body opposed to his once-fearsome form.
Despite this, the Demon Lord goes to the human world to see what his arch-nemesis is up to only to discover that the mighty hero Max is a layabout in a one-room apartment with a terrible reputation as a sleazebag in the human world.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero take place in fantasy worlds with a lot of modern day touches to them. This enables people like vampires and world-saving heroes to live like shut-ins.
However, truthfully, what these two series share is they both start off as very obviously comedy anime. They then go an develop legitimately interesting and down-right good actual plots. They never forget to be funny, but they also have moments of big action and unraveling intrigue that elevates them beyond just some easy laughs.
For Fans of Misunderstood as Strong and Competent
The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt
With his father ailing and the responsibility for his small poor kingdom falling to him, genius prince Wein is ready to commit treason. He desires to auction off his kingdom and retire in luxury.
However, his treasonous schemes always conclude with dire consequences, for him, anyway. His plans to fail instead constantly succeed and his kingdom begins to flourish.
I believe “fake it til you make it” is the applicable term for both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt.
Both series feature main characters that would rather be elsewhere goofing off. Instead, they are forced to lead an army/nation and are looking for a way to believably get out of it without being killed. Assisted by their extremely dedicated maid and/or companion, they carry out various plans and seem to unexpectedly succeed.
Both series enjoy both comedy and actual intriguing plot in equal measure. However, The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt is less supernatural and more just standard medieval fantasy with a focus on kingdom building.
Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun
Iruma Suzuki has had a tough life. His parents are irresponsible, so he must work to earn money to take care of himself.
One day, he discovers that his parents have sold him to the demon, Sullivan. Afraid at first, he relaxes when he discovers that the demon merely wants a grandchild.
As Sullivan is the headmaster of the demon school Babyls, he enrolls Iruma. However, Iruma soon discovers that as the grandchild of Sullivan, he is now expected to take the throne of the Demon King.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun are built on the foundation of misunderstandings. The main characters are the children of important people and are expected to take important positions. However, Iruma is an adopted human and a rather powerless one. Similar to Komari in several situations manipulated by Villhaze, people misunderstand him as incredibly powerful.
In both series, the main characters face imminent painful death by their more powerful underlings if the truth is exposed. However, they also have friends that they can trust and legitimate abilities of their own. While both series also start comically, and Iruma-kun does keep the comedy tone strong throughout the series, they also have more serious plots to explore. Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun is presented more like a standard shounen school action anime, though.
The Legendary Hero is Dead
Far to the north, the Demon Lord used Hell’s Gate to invade the human realm. However, he was stopped by legendary sword wielding hero Shion and his companions.
While the portal was sealed, the seal was incomplete and now with it weakening, the demons have begun to attack again. Worried about his village, the young perverted farmer Touka Scott dug a series of pitfall traps for protection around town. Unfortunately, legendary hero Shion finds one of these traps, falls in, and dies.
Trying to cover up the accident, Touka buries the hero secretly in the forest. While that was to be the end of it, Touka’s soul is taken from his body and stuffed into Shion’s rotting corpse by Shion’s companion and necromancer, Anri Haynesworth. Now, he is forced to travel to Hell’s Gate in order to attempt to seal the portal for good and save the world.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and The Legendary Hero is Dead are about main characters that everyone perceives as wildly powerful, but who actually really aren’t. While Terakomari does actually have great power that she can’t control well, The Legendary Hero is Dead is more dedicated to the main character often failing upwards and getting very lucky in situations that normal action anime would solve with an overpowered protagonist.
Both series are often comedy, but do have an actual intriguing plot that they are following. However, while The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess follows a plot of unfolding intrigue, The Legendary Hero is Dead is more of a journey-based adventure.
The Vampire Dies in No Time
Vampire hunter Ronald has received a job to rescue the son of a woman from the castle of what is said to be a legendarily powerful vampire.
However, upon arriving, he finds that this “powerful” vampire named Draluc immediately turned to ash when he kicked in the door. In fact, most things scatter him into a pile of ash as this “legendarily powerful vampire” is just strange reputation given to him. He’s actually super weak to everything.
Furthermore, the child in question was just freeloading there to play games during the day when Draluc was asleep and unaware.
In a strange turn of events, Draluc’s castle is destroyed and he and his armadillo move in with Ronald at his office. Now the pair work together taking care of the vampires and other problems that plague the city.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and The Vampire Dies in No Time work with the same concept of a vampire being misunderstood by others. While Terakomari is perceived as powerful, but is often just a weak shut-in until she loses control, Draluc has a reputation as a legendarily powerful vampire, but would die (and come back to life) if the wind blew too hard on him.
While The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess has a linear plot that it is following, The Vampire Dies in No Time is more of an episodic comedy that loves its slapstick jokes.
For Fans of Fantasy Yuri
The Executioner and Her Way of Life
For years, the Lost Ones have come from the distant world of Japan to a fantasy land. Not even these Lost Ones know how or why they arrive there, but their immense powers only bring destruction.
In order to secure the safety of their world, Executioners are charged with exterminating these Lost Ones.
While on the job, Executioner Menou happens across Akari, a Lost One summoned by an ambitious king. However, she finds that the girl is immortal and cannot be killed. Traveling with Akari, Menou seeks a way to end her life.
While The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess starts off seeming like a comedy, then gradually moves into a more serious fantasy action anime with plenty of yuri baiting, The Executioner and Her Way of Life is both more action-focused and more yuri-focused.
Unlike The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, The Executioner and Her Way of Life is often a more serious anime and there is no “baiting” to its yuri relationship. However, both series bring all their animation budget to bear when it comes time for the action scenes, showing you the tremendous might of the main character with enthralling flash and flair.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Miss Kobayashi is a programmer that lives alone in her apartment. However, one day a giant green dragon ends up on her doorstep and transforms into a women in a maid outfit.
Apparently, Kobayashi had gotten drunk one night and ended up saving this dragon. Now, dragon Tooru intends to repay her debt through housework.
Both The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid tell strong yuri-baiting stories with fantasy creatures. However, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is about dragons in the modern world, which is in stark contrast to the setting in The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess.
Both series follow the relationship between a woman and her overly dedicated maid. While The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess switches from slice of life comedy to intrigue and action, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a much more slice of life series.
Lycoris Recoil
In order to cut down on crime and terrorism, an organization called Direct Attack was formed. They take orphaned girls and turn them into agents that protect the country in the Lycoris program.
Takina is one gifted agent, but after a hostage situation leads to insubordination, she is transferred out of the main unit to a lower key branch of Lycoris ran out of a cafe.
Despite being paired with a famed, but more easy-going Lycoris prodigy Chisato while there, Takina is determined to get back into DA, but her new partner is determined to prove that there is more to life than just taking lives.
While Lycoris Recoil is based more on a fictionalized modern day rather than a medieval supernatural fantasy like The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, they both feature a strong appreciation for both yuri bait and interesting action.
Both series also share a passion for main characters that seem quite silly and weak, but in actuality, are incredibly powerful. However, while Chisato is focused on enjoying life rather than excelling at her job, Terakomari often doesn’t realize that she has access to her tremendous power until she gets upset.
The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
When she was a young child, Princess Anisphia recovered the memories of her previous life. Despite her having disappointingly no aptitude for magic, she uses the world’s magical capability and her past life knowledge of technology to form the realm of magicology.
One day while testing an invention, Anisphia crashes into a school party where her older brother is publicly breaking his engagement with Euphillia, robbing her of her future as a queen.
Anisphia whisks her away and asks her father to let her have her as an assistant and secretly hopes to make her a lover as well.
Unlike The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess that likes to yuri bait, there is no bait in Magical Revolution – it’s a fully realized fantasy yuri anime.
However, what these two series share most is not their yuri sensibilities, it is that both series follow unfolding plots of intrigue and revolution in a fantasy kingdom. You watch the main characters act more comical and eccentric, but they also have a serious side to them and serious skills when it comes to combat. However, while Terakomari doesn’t know she is so powerful, Anis is actively hiding it.
