Tsusui Hikari is an otaku that mostly avoids social life. He only really has one friend at school and is otherwise mocked by his classmates. One day, he ends up having to clean the pool with Igarashi Iroha. She is blunt, truant, and a troublemaker, but she stands up for Hikari when people make fun of him. While he is harsh with her, she never dismisses him. Could real 3D love be in the air?

Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki-kun
Fumiya Tomozaki is the top player in Japan at a fighting game called TackFam. Despite holding such a title, he is a failure at everything else, blaming it on the unfair rules and mechanics of life. One day, the second best TackFam player asks to meet up. Tomozaki discovers that they are actually Aoi, one of the most popular girls at school. She, however, is disappointed that someone she respected is a failure at life. Now, she aims to teach him how to succeed at the glorious game of life.
Both series start off with men who kind of hate everyone except for their digital interests. Then a beautiful girl bursts her way into their lives and rehabilitates then into a less hateful person and more functional person.
Wotakoi: Love is Difficult For and Otaku
After discovering they work at the same company, a gaming otaku and a fujoshi rekindle for the first time since middle school. After some good old fashioned after work drinks, they decide to start dating, but dating an otaku as an otaku is more difficult that one would think.
Unlike 3D Girlfriend, Wotakoi features the love between two otaku. It also happens to be a romance between adults so there is less drama and general romance tropes going on within, but it has its own difficulties to overcome.
The World God Only Knows
Keima Katsuragi is known as the “God of Conquest,” a man that can conquer any girl’s heart, at least in his dating sim games. However, when Keima arrogantly accepts an offer to prove his dating sim supremacy, he finds himself at the mercy of a demon that forces him to woo over real life girls.
I remember reading somewhere that 3D Girlfriend was inspired by a relationship in this show, and it kind of shows. While Keima has a certain arrogance all throughout, his talent for games does transfer pretty well into making real girls fall for him.

Your Lie in April
Although once a child prodigy in the music world, pianist Kousei Arima is left in a downward spiral after his mother’s death, unable to even hear the sound of his own piano. Even after two years, Arima has all but left the music world behind, disappointing fans and rivals alike, and living in a colorless world. Then one day that that all changes when he is introduced to the beautiful violinist Kaori Miyazono who brings color into his world once more.
Everything seems to be going upwards in terms of relationship and emotion, yet there is that thing in the back of your head that tells you things are going to end up sad. The true similarities are spoilers, so you only get that ultra vague little musing above.
Golden Time
Banri Tada has finally been accepted into a private law academy in Tokyo, but due to an accident, he is without all his memories. During his freshmen orientation, he meets Mitsuo Yanagisawa who is consummately stalked by a girl from his old school. Banri begins to hit it off with both of them. As they spend more time together, their fates seem intertwined, but for better or worse?
While both series start off like relatively normal romances, albeit they may sort of dislike each other, as the series goes on, the intensity goes up. Furthermore, they have a bit of a similar theme about memory.
Plastic Memories
Tsukasa Mizugaki has failed his college entrance exams, but he manages to land a job at the Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. This corporation is responsible for the creation of Giftias, or highly advanced androids which are almost indiscernible from normal humans. However, unlike humans, Giftias have a maximum lifespan of around nine years and four months. Terminal Service One, the station Tsukasa was assigned to, is responsible for collecting Giftias that have met their expiration date, before they lose their memories and become hostile.
While wildly different in setting, both series are, in essence, relationships with an expiration date. Giftias only live so long and Iroha is “moving” in half a year. It makes things messy near the end.

My First Girlfriend is a Gal
Although he has reached the spring of his youth, Junichi is finding it harder than expected to get a girlfriend, but that is due in no small part to his friends brazen habit of reading dirty magazines in class. In order to “help” him, his virgin friends submitted a love letter in his name to the resident gyaru of his class, Yame Yukana. However, while she may dress like a gal, this tough-looking girl is actually as pure as the snow.
In 3D Girlfriend, Iroha is perceived similar to the way a gal is in My First Girlfriend is a Gal. Everyone thinks she’s kind of loose, but in both series, both girls are actually pretty kind. Although Yukana is actually innocent while Iroha is not so much.
B Gata H Kei
Yamada is beautiful and just entering high school, but she has one strange goal – to have causal sex with 100 men. The problem is that she is afraid of being teased for being a virgin. Upon happenstance, she stumbles upon a solution to her problem, the soft-spoken (also virgin) Kosuda. The problem is, he knows nothing about sex and is a shy gentleman about it.
Like in 3D Girlfriend, the characters in B Gata H Kei have different perceptions about each other. Or rather, Yamada perceives all guys to be DTF while they are just as squeamish as she is. It actually ends up being a nice romance, but takes a more comical route to get there.
Toradora
Ryuuji Takasu is a gentle student with a passion for housework, but his thuggish face causes his fellow students to think him a delinquent. Taiga Aisaka is small and cute, but with an attitude as fierce as a tiger. Both of these misunderstood students also harbor feelings for their crushes, and after a series of misunderstandings of their own, they find themselves in an unlikely alliance to get their crushes to notice them.
While Tsusui and Iroha have different perceptions of each other, Ryuji and Taiga have to face the perceptions of others. They know each others true natures, but everyone else still occasionally judges them.
