Yuru Yuri

After being reunited with her childhood friends in middle school, Akari is enticed to join the Amusement Club that Yui and Kyoko created in their own first year of middle school. They convince Akari to join, only for her to discover that the club’s only function is to amuse its members.

Both series are school-based slice of life series with really no plot to speak of. However, Yuru Yuri is a bit more comedic and faster paced with that comedy. While Akebi’s Sailor Uniform has some yuri vibes if you read into things, Yuru Yuri is a bit more obvious with those vibes.

school club anime kon

K-On

Upon entering high school, Yui is immediately entranced by the Light Music Club. The problem is, she can’t play an instrument. Deciding to join the club anyway, the other club members, despite disappointment in her lack of musical knowledge, allow her to join to prevent the club’s disbandment. Today begins Yui’s musical education!

Do you like Akebi’s Sailor Uniform because it is well animated, cute, and really not about too much other than the characters hanging out? You will love K-On, because it is just that, but with sometimes a more musical bent.

wasteful days of high school girls anime

Wasteful Days of High School Girls

On her way to her entrance ceremony at her all-girls school, Akane Kikuchi mulls over how little progress she has made on her dream to become a manga artist as well as gain a boyfriend. Realizing the more attainable goal of getting a boyfriend at an all-girls school will be difficult, she ends up asking her classmates to introduce her to boys. Unfortunately for her, her classmates, like her best friends, are rather strange.

Both series are about girls in an all-girls school being friends and occasionally getting into shenanigans. However, while Akebi’s Sailor Uniform puts more of a focus on being wholesome, Wasteful Days of High School Girls is more about comedy based on the absurd and odd characters.

For Fans of Making Friends

komi cant communicate anime

Komi-san Can’t Communicate

It is the first day for incoming freshmen at the prestigious Itan Private High School. For Hitohito Tadano, he considers himself lucky to get in and angles to not make waves during his high school career. However, he finds himself sitting next to the beautiful, beloved, yet cold and silent Shouko Komi, immediately earning the ire of his classmates. After a series of events leads to him being left alone with her, he discovers that she is not cold, but suffers from extreme social anxiety that prevents her from speaking. After a long conversation through writing, he wants to help her reach her goal of making 100 friends.

Obviously, both series have the plots of the female characters wanting to make 100 friends at their new school. However, Akebi is able to jump right into that while Komi-san has to deal with her social anxiety via help from her first friend. Ultimately, they are cute shows with little plot outside of school slice of life.

hitori bocchis lifestyle anime

Hitori Bocchi’s Lifestyle

Suffering from extreme social anxiety, Hitori Bocchi has problems making friends. To make matters worse, she is going to middle school without her one and only friend. Furthermore, her only friend will only talk to her if she makes new friends at this school. So begins her struggle.

Both series are about girls starting their new school and have a desire to make friends. However, Hitori Bocchi is much more oriented towards comedy. Still, they both focus on a main character and her various wholesome adventures with new friends.

slow start anime

Slow Start

Insecure and timid, Hana Ichinose has just moved to a new town. As she also had a slow start, she will be attending school a year behind her peers. However, she is given a good jumping off point to make some friends during her introduction and dives right in.

Ultimately, you could say these series are extremely similar. They are both framed through a new girl starting a new school, and her wanting to make friends. She jumps right in on that regard, and they both focus on growing that friend circle and having a number of nice moments.

For Fans of Grounded Storytelling

super cub anime

Super Cub

Koguma is a student who has nothing. She lives alone, has no hobbies, and no friends. However, one day she stops by a vehicle shop in hopes of getting a motor scooter for her commute. Disheartened by price tags initially, she is sold on an old pre-owned Super Cub. However, what she didn’t know is the many different ways that the scooter would open up her world.

Despite Super Cub sometimes seeming like a beautiful anime commercial for Honda, it does tell a slow paced story about a girl with no friends slowly expanding her world through a quirk. In Super Cub, she makes friends because of her motor scooter. In Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, it is her sailor uniform that sets her apart and draws new attention.

anime series like Tsuki ga Kirei

Tsuki ga Kirei

For the first time in their third year, Azumi and Mizuno were put in the same class. Initially, they are nothing more than classmates, but continued exposure sees them grow progressively closer. As the year goes on, the pair and their classmates must come to face themselves as they mature and face challenges.

While Tsuki ga Kirei is innately different because it is a romance story, you will see the similarities in how the story is told. Both shows don’t have a ton of unrealistic drama, but do feature rather realistic characters and relationships in telling a story that isn’t over-the-top, but still keeps your attention.

March Comes in Like a Lion

Rei Kiriyama recently started to live alone in his last year of high school. He is able to financial support himself as a professional Shogi player, but while he officially became a pro in middle school, he is collapsing under the pressure to succeed. Burdened with his own problems, Rei has found solace among a kind family of three sisters, the Kawamotos. The oldest, Akari, likes to take in strays and Rei is the latest. While he feels conflicted about spending time with them, they provide accepting affection that he has gotten nowhere else.

While March Comes in Like a Lion has plot arcs that it explores, it is notable for being a really rather realistic show and becomes interesting because it tells real and relatable character issues. While it isn’t always as cute as Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, it does tell a really grounded story that could be super boring in a not boring way.
