For fans of Complicated Plots

anime series like steins gate

Steins;Gate

Mad scientist Rintarou Okabe spends his days tinkering around and creating futuristic inventions with his lab assistants in Akihabara, but nothing of any consequence. That is, until one day when his Phone Microwave, a device that changes bananas into green gel, gains the ability to send e-mails to the past, altering the flow of history. Now Okabe must frantically deal with the consequences of selfishly messing around with the past.

While Steins;Gate has a sci-fi plot and Blast of Tempest is very distinctly fantasy, both shows set themselves up as a mystery in which a crucial person dies, problems start to compound, and the main character must fix them. As Steins;Gate works with time travel, it takes a very simple plot and makes it wildly complex very quickly whereas Blast of Tempest just throws so many things together that it can be difficult to keep track of them.

from the new world anime

From the New World

After a small portion of the population awakened to psychokinectic powers, violence and upheaval rocked the world. However, those with powers were able to achieve peace by separating themselves into their own society. In the town of Kamisu 66, Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her powers. Pleased she can now attend the Sage Academy with her friends, it seems a great life is ahead of her. However, when Saki and her friends start to peer into their society’s darkest secrets, like what happens to kids that don’t awaken to their powers, the utopian veneer begins to peel away.

Both worlds start off in a mysterious world, similar yet wildly different from our own. The scope of that world is initially small, but grows as the characters discover it. From there, you get wrapped up in a complex and often fast moving plot surrounding the characters that sweeps you away with a number of plot twists.

perfect insider anime

The Perfect Insider

Genius programmer Shiki Magata lives on an island as a recluse. She rarely takes guests, but a professor and his student manage to get a meeting. Soon after their meeting is cut short and they both find themselves in a locked room murder mystery.

The Perfect Insider is more of a traditional mystery story with very few fantasy elements to it. However, like Blast of Tempest, things get very complex in terms of plot despite its small scope.

For Fans of Inspired by Literature

romeo x juliet anime

Romeo x Juliet

On the floating continent of Neo Verona, the Montague family murdered every member of the Capulet family to seize control, with the exception of their daughter who was hidden away. Fourteen years later, Juliet has a fateful encounter with the young Romeo Montague that sets off a whirlwind of star-crossed love.

Both series are based on Shakespearean stories, one more obviously than the other. The major similarity, however, is that they contain a huge amount of fantasy elements that pervert the original Shakespeare plays, but the key themes are the same.

bungo stray dogs anime group

Bungou Stray Dogs

The orphanage that Atsushi Nakajima has been living at has been recently plagued by a tiger that only he can see. Blaming him for the incident, they kick him out. Now homeless, he wanders the streets until he meets the eccentric Osamu Dazai and saves him from drowning. As it turns out, Dazai is a supernatural detective and agrees to help him solve the mystery.

While Blast of Tempest borrows themes from both Hamlet and The Tempest, Bungou Stray Dogs borrow authors from classical Japanese fiction. Both series then use these to craft a mystery story that is particularly engaging for those that know the source materials.

Gankutsuou anime

Gankutsuou

In the year 5053, French aristocrats Viscount Albert de Morcerf and Baron Franz d’Epinay attend Carnivale on the moon. While Franz wants to have fun, Albert is looking for something more fulfilling. However, after catching the eye of the Count of Monte Cristo at the opera, he finds more than he bargains for. Albert introduces him into French society, but the Count has vengeance on his mind as he seeks to ruin those that wronged him.

Both series are based on classic literature, but they are set in a wildly different future. This makes them more interesting, but as the key themes are kept the same, it reinvigorates these older tales as well.

For Fans of Uncomfortably Close Sister Relationships

Le Chevalier D'Eon anime

Le Chevalier D’Eon

In 18th century Paris, Lia de Beaumont, spy for Louis XV, has been pulled out of the river. Her recently knighted brother Charles d’Eon connects this to several disappearances around the city. Hoping to find her killer, he joins a secret police force. When a suspect turns into a murderous gargoyle, d’Eon discovers that he can now become possessed by his sisters vengeful soul.

Both series have inspirations for older media in which a brother is very close to his dead sister and investigates her death. Unfortunately, Blast of Tempest lacks that same gender bending aspect.

Tatsuya drawing his magical gun in front of Miyuki from The Irregular at Magic High School anime

The Irregular at Magic High School

After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over. At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.

Both series follow mages as well as a brother who feels overly protective of his sister. In both series, often it is the love of that sister that drives the story and sometimes even the conflicts of the story.

mawaru penguindrum anime

Mawaru Penguindrum

The Takakura family has always been dealt equal hands of joy and sorrow by fate. For the twin brothers Kanba and Shouma, they have had more than their share of sorrow with their parents dead and their sister critically ill. When their sister Himari is given temporary leave from the hospital, they take her to the aquarium where she collapses. However, Himari is inexplicably revived when a penguin hat from the souvenir shop is put on her head. Her revival comes at a cost, though. There is a new entity in her body that tasks the boys with finding the mysterious penguin drum.

Like Blast of Tempest, in Mawaru Penguindrum, there appears to be this weird love triangle between a girl and the people she loves most. However, the sister, because of this has a huge death flag on her and it rests on the main characters to unravel what is going on. If you enjoyed the occasionally confusing nature of Blast of Tempest, then this will be your new jam.
