For Fans of Overpowered Protagonists

wise mans grandchild anime

Wise Man’s Grandchild

After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin. However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew in to an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.

Both series focus on someone that was reincarnated into the world with impressive magical ability. However, in Wise Man’s Grandchild, they aren’t afraid to be impressive, they just aren’t so good at socializing.

saiki k anime

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Saiki Kusou has a wide array of superpowers that include things like telepathy and telekinesis. He is so overpowered that he could, in fact, conquer the world in just a few days, but Saiki just wants to live a normal life. He dislikes his superpowers and does his best to hide them so he can live peacefully. It doesn’t go well.

Saiki K definitely differs in the setting, but it is essentially a similar plot. Like the main character in Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average, Saiki seeks to hide his magnificent psychic powers in order to be a normal student. Of course, as a comedy, it doesn’t work out that way.

Tatsuya drawing his magical gun in front of Miyuki from The Irregular at Magic High School anime

Irregular at the Magic High School

After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over. At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.

While not an isekai, Irregular at the Magic High School is about someone with fantastic magical power that most people don’t know about. You get that same element of awe that you do in Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average when they do bust out those magic powers, but with better animation, plot, and less focus on comedy.

For Fans of Fantasy Comedies

endro anime

Endro

Every generation, a demon lord rises and a hero is born to challenge them. However, as the chosen hero and her party are fighting the demon lord, she casts a spell that sets them adrift in time. They are transported to before the demon lord has risen and the hero is still in school. With their memories erased, they begin their training anew. However, the demon lord has also been transported and enrolls herself in school.

Both series are set in fantasy worlds about adventurers. Furthermore, they are almost exclusively about young women doing fantasy adventure things. While Endro has a lot of comedy, it is more of a slice of life series. However, if you like your fantasy plot following school type settings, then this is for you.

anime series like konosuba

Konosuba

On his way back from buying a new game, Kazuma Satou died a pathetic death. However, he awakens before the Goddess Aqua who gives him two choices: go to heaven or reincarnate into an actual fantasy world. Naturally, the gamer picks the fantasy world. Now Kazuma must deal with defeating an evil demon king, useless party members, and paying living expenses.

Both series are about a person who dies, then gets reincarnated with one wish. In both shows, their wish actually comes back to bite them in various ways. This is the beginning of these isekai comedies. While Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average is more of a standard comedy, Konosuba is definitely considered more of a parody comedy.

little witch academia anime

Little Witch Academia

Although Atsuko is an ordinary girl, she became enamored by witches and magic by a magic show she saw as a kid hosted by a witch named Shiny Chariot. Now, she has aspires to be a witch, taking the first step by joining a renowned academy for witches called Luna Nova Academy. Although she faces hardship as a first generation witch and fan of Shiny Chariot, whom many consider a fraud, she and her two friends do their best each new day.

While not isekai, if you enjoyed that school vibe you got in Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average, as well as the use of magic, then this is a good how to follow it up with. While Little Witch Academia has a serious plot, it also has a lot of silly comedy.

For Fans of Reborn More Powerful

that time i got reincarnated as a slime anime

The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

After a run in with a robber, the 37-year-old Satoru is suddenly killed. He is reincarnated into a fantasy land, but not as a man. In fact, he is no longer even human! He is reincarnated as a lowly slime. After wandering, he comes across a dragon who he befriends and who gives him the new name of Rimuru. Absorbing this dragon into his slime body, promising to eventually break the seal that has bound him, gives Rimuru great magical ability. He then continues to inadvertently befriend beleaguered fantasy creatures in the forest who are constantly threatened by humanity. Eventually, he decides to found a nation uniting these creatures in order to help them protect themselves.

Both series have a protagonist that were reincarnated into another world as incredibly powerful people, but not in the way they wanted to be. Furthermore, you will note that the there is a lot of absurd comedy that relies on a straight man to set the joke up.

isekai cheat magicians anime

Isekai Cheat Magicians

TwTaichi and Ren, high school students and childhood friends, are transported to a fantasy world by a beam of light one afternoon. After narrowly escaping a monster attack, they travel with a group of adventurers to the guild. There, they discover that their magical aptitude is off the charts! Now in possession of incredibly magical ability, the must familiarize themselves with this world while they search for a way home.

Both series feature protagonists sent to another world and they end up vastly more powerful than they were in their previous reality due to some sort of magic. Unfortunately, Isekai Cheat Magicians smacks of every generic trope in isekai.

  1. You should also look at Demon Lord Retry ( https://www.monstersandcritics.com/anime/demon-lord-retry-season-2-release-date-maou-sama-retry/ ), which ran just before Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life. It does seem to start like a generic fighting isekei, but turns more into a comedy. I rarely review anime–I don’t often get opportunity for first viewings–but I like watching this one. Sub and dub casts are great, the characters are interesting and sympathetic (except for the nasty Satanists and demons of course), there is a bit of a mystery about just how the main character ended up as his star character (but not in his own game and its world!), and Aku won’t be the last waif he will end up protecting and helping.

  2. And oh, keep on the lookout for “My Next Life as a Villainess All Roads Lead to Doom!”, airing this upcoming season! A young Japanese schoolgirl ends up in the same situation as Mile, but she’s not the heroine–she’s the BAD GUY! Unlike the protagonists of Retry or Overlord, our Katarina Claes KNOWS what fate awaits her if she follows the script. So she sets out on her grand plan to cheat her fate! However, given the fans of the story have nicknamed her “Bakarina”, it seems things don’t go exactly according to plan…
