saiki k anime

Anime Like The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Saiki Kusou has a wide array of superpowers that include things like telepathy and telekinesis. He is so overpowered that he could, in fact, conquer the world in just a few days, but Saiki just wants to live a normal life. He dislikes his superpowers and does his best to hide them so he can live peacefully. It doesn’t go well.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K was one of those anime series that got overlooked in the summer season because it is one of those 5-minute episode series, but they show a new episode each day of the week. It is still running and many people abandoned it too early. However, if you give it a chance, it can be one of the most fun series you have seen all year. I was one of those people, and I regret my decisions to not watch it earlier.

For Fans of Unexpected Comedy

sakamoto anime

Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

Sophisticated, suave, and handsome, Sakamoto is perfect in every way. Unfortunately, his sheer perfection provokes everyone from his peers to his teachers to try to trip him up, but they just can’t manage it. However, they just might learn something about themselves along the way.

In its own way, Sakamoto is also about having superpowers, the super power of being way too perfect. Unlike Saiki K, Sakamoto is about using his super power to foil the people trying to trip him up, leading to a number of humorous situations that are built on the basis of sheer oddness.

Cool-Headed Hoozuki anime

Cool-Headed Hoozuki

Hell is a bureaucracy and it is running smoother than ever thanks to Hoozuki, the chief deputy of the King of Hell. This is his story of micromanaging and troubleshooting all the problems in Hell.

Hoozuki and Saiki K both share the same deadpan sort of protagonist and gag humor that makes them both so much fun. The anime series also share a very colorful palate and fast-paced episodes. However, the real difference is that Hoozuki often relies on being very punny, which must have made it really hard to translate.

azumanga-daioh-anime

Azumanga Daioh

Chiyo Mihama is the strangest girl in her high school class of some already strange people. As a child prodigy, she skipped all the way to high school where she forms a bond with some of the oddest girls around.

While Saiki K is centered around one guy, Azumanga Diaoh is centered around a group of girls going crazy, but both are absolutely stunning comedies. Like Saiki K, Azumanga Diaoh is told in short 5-minute stories, but they are combined into one longer episode.

For Fans of Unwanted Super Powers

mob psycho 100 anime

Mob Psycho 100

Kageyama Shigeo, otherwise known as Mob, is a young psychic with a wide range of blossoming abilities. Despite having this incredible power, he just wants to become friends with Tsubomi, a girl in his class. Due to negative reactions to his psychic abilities in the past, he now tries to keep them in check. In an effort to learn to better control his abilities, Mob becomes the apprentice to Reigen Arataka, who claims to be a psychic, but is actually a con artist that exploits Mob’s very real powers for money.

Because it was created by the same guy that did One Punch Man, even though these two show premiered in the same season, Mob Psycho got vastly more attention. However, they actually turned out to be pretty similar in content. Both main characters seem to hate their powers, and both want to live the lives of normal people.

katte_ni_kaizou_anime

Katte ni Kaizou

Katsu Kaizou is a gullible high schooler that believes in all things sci-fi. In fact, he believes that everything going on around him is a plot by aliens to take over the world. Joining the science club to find others like him, he is tossed into a whole new world of bizarre oddities.

Both series are about the strange daily lives of teenagers with powers. Both heavily rely on nonsense and absurd situations for their humor, but they also both feature wonderful bright art. While Saiki K is pretty much just about psychic powers, Katte ni Kaizou is about the full range of scientific oddities.

one punch man anime

One Punch Man

In order to pursue his childhood dream, the ordinary and unimpressive Saitama trained so hard that his hair fell out. However, his hard work paid off. Now it only takes one punch to defeat most villains in the city. Unfortunately, beating opponents in one punch is actually pretty boring, but that all changes when a cyborg named Genos, wanting to be his disciple, suggests that they join the Hero Association together.

You knew this was coming. You can’t have a series about oddballs with super powers without mentioning One Punch Man. Both series feature insanely strong main characters that can pretty much defeat anyone if they try, but outside of battle, they are extremely deadpan and a little silly.

For Fans of Actually Good 5-Minute Episode Series

i cant understand what my husband is saying anime

I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying

Hajime Tsunashi is an otaku and a shut-in that runs a blog. Kaoru Tsunashi is a hard-working, hard-drinking business woman. They shouldn’t have met and fell in love, but they did.

This series, like all in this section, doesn’t have much to do with The Disastrous Life of Saiki K in plot, but it is similarly as funny and colorful while being perfect for otaku audiences. However, like many 5-minute episode series, things move fast, so I hope you can read subtitles with sufficient speed.

teekyuu

Teekyuu

Teekyuu is about the daily lives of a tennis club that doesn’t really play tennis ever.

You like random? You like weird? You just a bit nerdy? You’ll like this. Plus there are so many seasons, you have a lot to keep you busy.

The Manga Artist and His Assistants anime

The Manga Artist and His Assistants

This story depicts the work life of a perverted manga artist, Aito Yuuki, and his assistant, Ashisu Sahoto. Under constant pressure by his editor and lacking girl experience, he frequently used his assistant as a reference.

Although technically 13 minutes per episode, this short anime series really brings the pain when it comes to comedy. If you like your anime perverted, but not too in your face about it, this is an excellent watch.

    1. I’m glad you like it! Azumanga Diaoh is a classic when it comes to random comedy and I’ve yet to meet the cold-hearted soul who hasn’t gotten a kick out it.
