Mononoke
Mononoke follows the story of a man simply known as the Medicine Seller. However, it is not medicine he sells, but rather he travels feudal Japan ridding villages of malevolent spirits called mononoke. Before he can kill each spirit he encounters, he must first learn its Form, Truth, and its Reason.
Similar premise to Dr. Ramune, but a more mature and artistic presentation. Whereas Dr. Ramune tends to inject some comedy amidst the series as it explores the issues, Mononoke is distinctly more melancholic about everything.
Welcome to Irabu’s Office
This is the story of the many patients and their many problems that come to the psychiatric ward of Irabu General Hospital. Here, these patients undergo counseling by the child-like son of the hospital director, Dr. Ichiro Irabu and his sullen but sexy nurse Mayumi. While his treatments are unique and his advice seems insane, he gets results.
Enjoy doctors that are incredibly odd? Well, here is one more for you. Both series are about medical officials fixing problems. In Dr. Ramune, the problems are the odd part. In Irabu, it is the solutions that are the strange bit.
The Morose Mononokean
After spending his first few days of school in the infirmary after a spirit attached itself to him, Ashiya asks for the help from the owner of a small tea shop called the Mononokean. Though morose, this tea shop owner helps spirits wander from this world to the next.
Again, both Dr. Ramune and The Morose Mononokean are about spirits who plague people with different maladies and the person who helps shepherd those spirits elsewhere. Both are actually fairly comical sometimes as well, but Mononokean is more the mature series.

Demon Detective Nougami Neuro
Neuro Nougami is a demon that feeds on mysteries and puzzles. However, as a demon who must remain unnoticed by humans, he pairs up with a human girl in order to solve mysteries, a job she hopes will help her solve her own personal mystery.
Both series are their own special type of insane in their unique ways. If you enjoyed the strange sort of maladies in Dr. Ramune, then the mysteries, and the method of getting rid of them is a dial above that.
Mushishi
In this world, there exist Mushi, spirits that often exist with no purpose. However, these Mushi can affect the physical world in countless forms from diseases to more pleasant phenomenon. Why do these Mushi exist? That is the question that Ginko the Mushi-shi, a researcher on the phenomenon, asks himself as he travels the land investigating Mushi-related incidents.
If you enjoyed the problems caused by the spirits in Dr. Ramune, but wanted something a little more serious, this is it. Mushishi essentially explores all the problems that the spirits can cause in the world. While he doesn’t necessarily always solve the problem, it is interesting to see what is happening.
Natsume’s Book of Friends
For as long as he can remember, Takashi Natsume has been chased by spirits, but recently he discovered that the reason was because his deceased grandmother had passed on to him her “Book of Friends,” a book containing all the spirits she had brought under her control. Now Natsume realizes that these spirits haunt him in hopes of gaining freedom. With few friends, no loving home, and constantly hunted by malicious spirits, Natsume looks for a place where he belongs.
Natsume’s Book of Friends both is and isn’t as strange as Dr. Ramune. It depends on the episode. However, both series are about guys helping people. It is just that Natsume helps the spirits directly rather than any people they are afflicting.
For Fans of Confronting the Consequences of Your Life
xxxHolic
Watanuki can see spirits and supernatural creatures, an ability he finds annoying. However, one day after being bothered by some spirits, he feels compelled to enter a strange house. Within, he meets Yuuko, a woman that claims to be able to remove his ability for a price. The price being that he works in her store where she grants wishes.
Essentially, both series are about people dealing with the problems of others. They just go about it different ways, but there is a similar level of snark there.
Hell Girl
It is said that those who hold a powerful grudge can access a particular website at midnight. By entering a name here, that person can be ferried straight to hell. This is the tale of Ai Enma, the Hell Girl that carries out those orders.
Unlike Dr. Ramune that has a more hands-on approach, Hell Girl examines the problems of people through a more neutral gaze. She isn’t there to help. In fact she is there to take them to hell. Still, if it is those stories you enjoyed in Dr. Ramune, this can fill that void.
Haibane Renmei
Rakka is an amnesiac who only remembers emerging from her cocoon. She is born into the world as a Haibane, a group of young people who have small gray wings and halos. While she tries to live a normal life, there is much that the Haibane don’t know and must figure out.
While Haibane Renmei is distinctly more melancholic and rarely ever comical in the same way as Dr. Ramune is, it is all about people confronting certain issues within them before they can move forward.
