anime series like steins gate

Steins;Gate

Mad scientist Rintarou Okabe spends his days tinkering around and creating futuristic inventions with his lab assistants in Akihabara, but nothing of any consequence.

That is, until one day when his Phone Microwave, a device that changes bananas into green gel, gains the ability to send e-mails to the past, altering the flow of history.

Now Okabe must frantically deal with the consequences of selfishly messing around with the past.

In both anime series, the main character time travels into the past to save someone dear to him. Each time, it messes with the natural timeline, for better or worse.

However, Erased tends to be faster moving and more emotional, but Steins;Gate actually addresses how the time travel is done. It’s not just plot magic.

Steins;Gate is a time travel staple anime now. If you crave more, try these 13 Time Travel Anime Series That Aren’t Steins;Gate

re zero anime

ReZERO  – Starting Life in Another World

On his way back from a midnight snack run, high school truant Subaru Natsuki suddenly finds himself summoned to another world, one more at home in an RPG than the real world.

After having his life saved by a mysterious girl, he vows to help her recover a stolen item.

Unfortunately, his tale ends soon after with his death. Yet, while bleeding out on the floor, Subaru summons forth a new ability – the power to return from death.

Throughout Erased, the main character returns to the past multiple times. The same thing essentially happens in Re: Zero.

Each time the main character dies, he has to go through the motions and make the correct decision to not only save himself, but others.

Anime Series Like Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are your typical middle school girls, but one day they encounter a cute creature named Kyuubey that offers to grant them one wish. In exchange for their wish, they must become magical girls and protect humanity from witches.

While Sayaka accepts right away, Madoka is more hesitant, not knowing what she would wish for.

However, her decision is even further delayed when the mysterious Homura Akemi, a transfer student, begs her not to accept.

Both Erased and Madoka Magica deal with time travel and lightly touch on multiverses. However, both also feel similar in terms of sheer urgency that is evoked as things progressive degenerate.

While Madoka Magica gets a bit more mind fuck-y, both story lines feature fantastic plot twists that leave you hungry for more.

anime series like orange

Orange

On the first day of a new semester, Naho Takimiya oversleeps. On her way out after being late for school, she finds a letter waiting for her that says it is from herself ten years in the future.

The letter ardently states her regrets that she has surrounding a new transfer student, Kakeru Naruse.

Thinking it is a prank at first, Naho ignores it, but when the events described within begin to come true, Naho decides that she will try to help her future self.

Instead of the physical act of time travel, Orange instead ferries a letter from their future selves to their past selves which allows them to change a heart-breaking event that happened in their past.

It is a little more easy to grasp, but like Erased, it makes no effort to explain the time travel.

tokyo revengers anime

Tokyo Revengers

For Takemichi Hanagaki, his second year of middle school was when he peaked. He had a small amount of respect as a thug, a loyal group of friends, and even a girlfriend.

Fast forward twelve years later, and he is a single adult that can’t hold down a job. He has even found out that his middle school girlfriend was murdered by the vicious Tokyo Manji Gang. A

fter an accident, he finds himself back in middle school and discovers that he can travel back and forth in time in order to help change his past and his future.

Tokyo Revengers actually has a really similar plot to Erased. Both main characters grow up to be struggling as an adult, are shocked a traumatic death, and end up able to go back to when they were a kid to change the events.

However, Tokyo Revengers has the whole street thug theme to it which makes it less of a thriller and kind of more like a shounen story sometimes.

charlotte anime

Charlotte

Yuu Otosaka has the ability to slip into other people’s mind and control them for five seconds at a time. He has been using it to get good grades, but after he is caught by the enigmatic Nao Tomori, he is forced to transfer to a special school to safeguard children with these powers from discovery.

At this supernatural new school, he is forced to join the Student Council where he uses his powers to hunt down other young people who are using and abusing their own powers.

It will definitely take a hot minute to see the similarities between Charlotte and Erased at first without spoiling everything.

Charlotte seems like a school comedy with supernatural powers at first, but it ends up being such a solid drama by the end. It ends up really surprising in that way, and like Erased, will leave a hole inside you when you finish it.

Kokkoku anime

Kokkoku

After another failed job interview, Juri resigns herself to having to live in her house with her other failures of family members.

However, when her sister’s son and her NEET brother are kidnapped, her grandfather informs her of a powerful family secret. By offering up her blood to his mystical stone, they can enter the world of Stasis, a world of stopped time.

After their rescue efforts go awry, the family is confronted by a giant monster and the true nature of the timeless world.

Both series are, obviously, about main characters that can alter time in different ways.

Aside from supernatural elements, Kokkoku, like Erased, maintains a pretty good pace as a thriller and mystery.

sakurada resett anime

Sakurada Reset

Kei lives in the seaside town of Sakurada, which is filled with people with various powers.

One day, he meets a girl named Haruki on the school roof. She has the ability to reset things to three days prior, but even she does not remember when she uses it or what happened.

However, as Kei has the power of a photographic memory, he is able to remember. The pair join the Service Club to start trying to help the people in town.

Sakurada Reset is very much like a softer version of Erased. There is no murder mystery, but there is stuff going on in the town.

Essentially, both series end up a mystery about people who can manipulate time.

For Fans of Emotional Mysteries

anohana anime

Anohana – The Flower We Saw That Day

After the death of childhood friend Meiko “Menma” Honma, Jinta Yadomi and his group of friends grew apart, each trying to deal with grief and guilt in their own way.

However, when Jinta starts seeing what he believes to be Menma’s ghost, the group of friends are drawn together to help grant her long-desired wish.

Both anime series deal with the difficult topics of death and regret. As such, each main character ultimately sets out to fix what happened to a little girl from their past.

While in Erased, the main character can actually fix it, in Aohana, the characters actually just have to deal with their emotions.

from the new world anime

From the New World

After a small portion of the population awakened to psychokinectic powers, violence and upheaval rocked the world. However, those with powers were able to achieve peace by separating themselves into their own society.

In the town of Kamisu 66, Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her powers. Pleased she can now attend the Sage Academy with her friends, it seems a great life is ahead of her.

However, when Saki and her friends start to peer into their society’s darkest secrets, like what happens to kids that don’t awaken to their powers, the utopian veneer begins to peel away.

Although each ultimately has different story lines, both anime series involves a group of kids trying to figure out why students are disappearing from their school.

While Erased works on a small-scale mystery, From the New World eventually grows grand in scheme.

wonder egg priority anime

Wonder Egg Priority

After the death of her best and only friend, Ai Ohto became a shut-in.

One night while on a walk, she is convinced by a mysterious entity to buy an egg. In a world that only materializes in her dreams, she breaks the egg. This summons a person haunted by fears, regrets, or otherwise some trauma.

There, Ai is tasked with saving them, and by saving them from their trauma, she can perhaps save her friend, too.

Erased was a little bit easier to grasp in the beginning, but if you can make it past the mystifying first episode of Wonder Egg Priority, the endearing plot begins to make itself known.

Both shows essentially deal with trying to save the life of a friend who met a heart-breaking end.

For Fans of Dark Thrillers

blast of tempest anime main characters

Blast of Tempest

Hakaze Kusaribe is a sorceress tasked with protecting the Tree of Origins. However, when a rival member of her family seeking to revive the Tree of World’s End catches her, she is stuffed into a barrel and banished to an island.

From there, Hakaze sends a message out to sea, one received by Mahiro Fuwa. In agreement to help Hakaze off the island, he asks that she use her magic to help find his sister’s killer.

Although more of a fantasy setting, Blast of Tempest and Erased both start things off with a murder, one that is slowly unraveled throughout the series, but not without some crazy plot twists.

Although the different settings ultimately dictate the plot, both are the type of shows in which you can’t wait for the next episode.

death note anime

Death Note

Bored with the endless monotony of immortality, shinigami Ryuk drops his death note, a tool that will kill anyone who has their name written in it, on Earth.

High school student and academic prodigy Light Yagami picks it up.

Deploring the state of the world, he quickly decides to use it to end the lives of criminals.

Like Erased, Death Note is a constant game of cat and mouse, the big difference is that in Death Note, the main character is technically the villain.

In both, you watch the antagonists try to get out of getting caught and the protagonists actively trying to foil them. It is an anime full of the twists and turns that come with these types of detective-style mysteries.

monster anime

Monster

Dr. Kenzou Tenma is a renowned brain surgeon working abroad in Europe. With a great job and beautiful fiancée, he has everything in life.

However, one night he is faced with a dilemma – save the mortally wounded mayor or a mortally wounded boy. Ignoring his colleagues’ pleas, Tenma’s morals force him to save the boy.

However, when a series of murders begin to happen around the doctor, all evidence points to the boy he saved.

While Erased is more supernatural in its murder mystery, both it and Monster feature characters unraveling a suspenseful and tense situation.

Both main characters find themselves framed for murder, while both being heroes that actually save people.

The two are also the very top-tier of mystery anime.

the promised neverland anime

The Promised Neverland

Grace Fields House is a home for orphans. However, even though they have no blood families, they are all one big family. That is, until the age of twelve when they are adopted out.

The kids also know that they are not allowed outside the fenced yard, but one day, two children break that rule.

They then discover that the children who are “adopted” are actually subjected to something much darker.

In their essence, both Erased and The Promised Neverland fill the deep need you have to watch children struggle to stay alive.

They definitely meld adult themes with innocent young characters very well, creating a tense atmosphere at times as the next turn of the screw happens.

terror in resonance anime

Terror in Resonance

After a terrorist attack on a Japanese nuclear facility, the country was paralyzed to act. After six months of searching for the perpetrators, the public is shown a video of two boys known as Sphinx who take credit for a recent bomb attack. The pair are soon linked to the terrorist attack on the nuclear facility by police.

Threatening more mayhem to come, it is up to the police to catch these terrorists. However, Sphinx has been very careful to never kill anyone with their attacks. Instead, they hope to use them to expose a secret government experiment and its cruelty.

While Terror in Resonance is about abused children in its own way, mostly it combines crime thriller elements with main characters that are terrorists.

Like Erased, it creates an interesting and tense story where more is unraveled as it goes on.

ghost hound anime

Ghost Hound

In the small village of Suiten, three boys with traumatic pasts learn how to let their souls travel in between the world they know and the mysterious Unseen World. The Unseen World is one of ghosts.

However, the three boys aren’t the only things coming and going from this world. Ghosts are now also beginning to pass into the real world as well.

Erased definitely has a nice way of keeping a good pace, but Ghost Hound is a little bit slower.

Both are psychological stories, but where Erased keep things tense, Ghost Hound is more about a creeping atmosphere of dread consuming the show over time.

perfect insider anime

The Perfect Insider

Genius programmer Shiki Magata lives on an island as a recluse. She rarely takes guests, but a professor and his student manage to get a meeting.

Soon after, their meeting is cut short and they both find themselves in a locked room murder mystery.

If Erased awakened a need for more murder mysteries with clever moves and countermoves, The Perfect Insider will scratch that itch.

It is more your standard murder mystery story, but the way it plays out is refreshing and interesting.

paranoia agent anime

Paranoia Agent

There is an urban legend going around in Musashino City about Shounen Bat, a boy that rolls around on roller blades and beats people with his bent golden baseball bat. Numerous reports of his attacks have turned up, but the police have been unable to catch him.

As the investigation continues and more people fall victim, paranoia begins to set in.

Both Erased and Paranoia Agent are psychological thrillers that have solid ways of drawing in audience and keeping them there through mystery.

Paranoia Agent has its moments of being weird as fuck, but that just makes everything going on all the more intriguing as it is a show, as the name suggests, about paranoia.
