For Fans of Adventure

One Piece

One Piece

With his dying breath, legendary Pirate King Gol D. Roger let the world know about his treasure, setting in motion the Grand Age of Pirates. Among the many crews that set out to look for the legendary One Piece treasure is Monkey D. Luffy, a young man that has assembled a rag-tag crew to sail the Grand Line and hunt down One Piece.

Yes, yes, immediately notable because One Piece is also about being a sea-faring pirate, though Fena doesn’t do much piracy herself. However, while One Piece is a shounen series and can be a little difficult to get into because of that, if you like huge world and even huger casts of absolutely the most creative characters, it is a great watch. It is different from Fena in many ways, but like Fena, it builds a big sea-based world and has tons of unique people to meet in it.

to your eternity anime

To Your Eternity

One day, an entity, for reasons unknown, threw an orb to Earth. With no emotion or identity, the orb is meant to gather sensations and is able to take the shape of things it encounters as it learns. For many years, it was a rock, and then it became moss, and when a wolf took its last breath near it, it became the wolf. After wandering for some time, it met a boy. After a long struggle, the boy, too, took his last breath. With human form, now the orb sets off on his never-ending journey where he will meet many new people and have many new experiences.

Let’s be clear, To Your Eternity is more of a drama series that showcases the human experience. As such, it is more often just sad rather than filled with action, but it becomes more action-oriented as it goes on. The big similarity in both series is that you explore a lot of the world through the characters and their journey. You see a lot of people, go a lot of places, and it is all animated so vibrantly.

anime series like rage of bahamut

Rage of Bahamut

Thousands of years ago, ancient dragon Bahamut terrorized the world. However, when gods and demons allied themselves to prevent the world’s destruction, they sealed him away, splitting the key among them so he would be eternally imprisoned. After the dragon was sealed, humanity returned to normal. However, things are about to get very abnormal for bounty hunter Favaro when he meets a mysterious women that holds half the key to Bahamut’s seal.

Rage of Bahamut and Fena: Pirate Princess both start off with intriguing character mysteries and set you on the path towards discovering them. After engaging you with that, you are kept along for the ride by some of the most absolutely lovable characters. They have a good balance of silly and serious while fleshing out a lively world.

bodacious space pirates anime

Bodacious Space Pirates

Young Marika keeps herself busy with a job at a retro cafe in the space yacht club. However, one day two strangers approach her, claiming to be the subordinates of her dead father, and demand she take command of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. As an agreement was made after the war of independence a century ago that the ship must be inherited by the captain’s next of kin, Marika begins her exciting new life as a space pirate.

While this series is distinctly more comedy, it actually shares a fair bit with Fena. It does focus on pirates, albeit in space, the main female commands her own ship, and the ship is helmed by quite the cast of characters. It even starts off with people finding the main character because of who her father was and they end up setting her on an epic adventure.

For Fans of A Lady and Her Bodyguards

yona of the dawn anime

Yona of the Dawn

After having her luxurious life shattered by the betrayal of her cousin, Princess Yona is forced to escape with her childhood friend Son Hak. However, leaving her palace forces her to see the poverty and strife that really makes up her beloved kingdom. Now she must journey to not only regain her rightful throne, but to return her kingdom to its former glory.

While Yona’s quest for her throne isn’t quite the same as Fena’s quest for answers, these series share a lot. Both series involve young girls who have their world view grow as they set out on a journey and both are guarded along the way by several companions. Both series also involve a romance between her and her primary bodyguard.

chaika the coffin pricness anime

Chaika – The Coffin Princess

Chaika Trabant is on a quest. Carrying a coffin on her back, with no memory of her past, and highly adept at casting spells, she is hunting down the scattered remains of the Emperor Gaz who once held the world in an iron grip. One day, she meets Toru Akari in the woods, a warrior who is having trouble finding a job to support himself. Together along with Toru’s sister, they start their journey.

While much different in the details, both series follow a girl that is essentially sent on a journey due to her father. On that path, she is guarded by skilled assassins that also become her friends. Both series also end up in a much grander place then they start in terms of how the story unravels.

anime like samurai champloo

Samurai Champloo

Fuu is a young girl working as a waitress at a small tea house. Things are peaceful until one day she spills tea on a customer and finds the samurai harassing her. Calling for help, a thuggish young rogue by the name of Mugen steps in only to pick a fight with another tightly wound samurai named Jin. In their fight, they end up destroying the shop and getting arrested. After saving the two fighters from their execution, Fuu hires them as bodyguards to help her find a samurai that smells of sunflowers.

Both series follow a kind of goofy girl going on a quest, though Samurai Champloo is much smaller in scale. On this quest, she is accompanied by companions that are both quirky and skilled in combat. Essentially, when you watch each you will enjoy both silly shenanigans and serious moments of action in equal measure.

For Fans of Alternate History Real Worlds

gosick anime

Gosick

Kujou Kazuya is a transfer student to the elite Saint Marguerite Academy in the Southern European country of Sauville. However, because of his Japanese descent, he is shunned by the other students. One day in the library of the school, he ends up following a long blonde hair to a beautiful doll-like girl call Victorique de Blois who can predict the future, including their own currently entwined one. Together, the pair begin to solve the mysteries that are beginning to plague their surroundings.

While Gosick isn’t quite the same action adventure romp as Fena, as it’s more so about solving mysteries that seem supernatural but have mundane causes, it does share a world that is very similar to our own, but with distinct differences. In Gosick, it takes place in a made up European country post-World War II, much like how Fena’s world is interspersed with Age of Discovery places and influences. It is an interesting meld of real world and fictional.

appare ranman anime

Appare Ranman

Without any money, they decide to enter the Trans-American Wild Race so they can go back to Japan. With their steam-powered car, they must overcome bandits, challenges, and just plain weirdos in order to get from Los Angeles to New York.

While Appare Ranman focuses on a race, you will find a lot of similarities to Fena in the details. For one, the animation in both is visually lovely, and for some, that’s all they need.. It also shares a rotating cast of uniquely desired characters that are encountered on an epic adventure.

Every main character from the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime running forward

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

In 1868, English nobleman George Joestar had his life saved by Dario Brando. When Dario passes away, George repays the favor he owed by taking in Dario’s son, Dio. However, unsatisfied with his life, Dio soon moves to take control of the Joestar house with the help of an Aztec stone mask that grants him supernatural powers. In his quest to destroy George and his son Jonathan, it sets off a chain of events that will echo through the decades, including half a century later when Jonathan’s grandson, Joseph, discovers his family’s legacy.

While Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure becomes a generational tale, it does do big grand adventure with something distinctly otherworldly going on much like Fena. Both series are packed with interesting characters and really do capture the unique thrill that is “adventure”.
