Recently dumped by his girlfriend, college student Kazuya Kinoshita tries to fill the void with an app that lets him rent a girlfriend. While Chizuru seems like the perfect girlfriend, reading the reviews online, he finds out it is an act.
He leaves her a bad review and this reveals her more sassy true self when she comes after him for it. Unfortunately, after his grandmother’s collapse, he introduces her as his girlfriend at the hospital, and thus they begin their fake relationship.
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Rent-a-Girlfriend are about men who suffer from terminal indecisiveness. They have more girls then they deserve interested in them, but will not romantically commit to any of them.
However, Girlfriend, Girlfriend is lampshading the concept by making him date all the girls for fun harem comedy. Rent-a-Girlfriend, while Kazuya’s spinelessness is comical, is often trying to be more drama focused.
Love and Lies
In order to encourage successful marriages and to combat the low birthrate, the Japanese government now assigns marriage partners at the age of 16. Unwilling to face the severe repercussions that come with denial, Yukari Nejima goes along with it, despite confessing to his long-time crush.
However, is his reciprocated love doomed to be crushed when he gets his marriage notice?
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Love and Lies are about a male main character that is in a relationship with two (or more) women who know about each other. They also work with a suspension of disbelief that these polyamorous relationship work as peacefully as it does.
The big difference between Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Love and Lies is that Love and Lies is very much a drama. There isn’t much comedy to be found, but it is a sort of occasionally sultry drama.
Domestic Girlfriend
Natsuo is in love with his teacher Hina. In order to try and forget his feelings, he goes to a mixer and meets a girl named Rui.
Oddly enough, she asks him to do her a favor – to have sex with her. He does so, but soon he is faced with a unique problem. His father has remarried and he now has two new stepsisters that he knows too well – Rui and Hina.
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Domestic Girlfriend are about (at least) two girls who are in love with and actively pursuing the same guy. However, Domestic Girlfriend makes them sisters.
While Girlfriend, Girlfriend lampshades its rediculious relationship with comedy, Domestic Girlfriend plays its love triangle out for drama. If you enjoy your trashy dramas where two girls do everything short of fist fight over a guy, Domestic Girlfriend is pretty great. As it is trying to be a mature drama, it adds sex into things as well.
A Couple of Cuckoos
Nagi Umino, a diligent student, and Erika Amano, a social media star, seemingly have nothing in common until they discovered that they were actually switched at birth.
With this suddenly revealed to them, both families agree that in order to not uproot their life, the two of them should get engaged. The pair quickly reject this plan, but neither is really willing to back down either.
While a bit different than the comedic set up of Girlfriend, Girlfriend, A Couple of Cuckoos is also about a guy that has a complicated relationship with two women.
Both series has the male main character actively in love with one girl, but has building feelings and appreciation for another. It is just that Girlfriend, Girlfriend skips all the build up that A Couple of Cuckoos is dedicating itself to.
While both series have their comedy, A Couple of Cuckoos is more a straightforward harem where it wants you to pick a main girl, but keeps you guessing as to if they will win.
More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers
Jirou Yakuin, third-year high school student and otaku, has had a crush on his childhood friend, Shiori. He hopes to be paired with her for their school’s upcoming marriage practical – an exam where two people are paired to live together in order to practice married life as they are observed and scored.
For popular Akari Watanabe, she hopes to be paired with the handsome Minami. Much to each other’s dismay, Jirou and Akari and paired together while Minami and Shiori are paired together.
Luckily, if both couples rank in the top, they can change partners, thus do Akari and Jirou venture to pretend to have a perfect married life.
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers are set up around main characters in a love triangle. Girlfriend, Girlfriend becomes a comedic polyamorous relationship harem while More Than a Married Couple has a forced relationship set up.
While Girlfriend, Girlfriend plays its harem for laughs, More Than a Married Couple is more focused on romantic progression. He deepens his relationship with both girls and the show invests you well in wanting to know which one of the perfectly lovable girls he is going to ultimately pick.

Masamune-kun’s Revenge
As a child, Masamune Makabe confessed his love to the wealthy and beautiful Aki Adagaki. However, she brutally rejected him and nicknamed him “Piggy” due to his chubby appearance.
Fleeing to his grandfather’s home in the country, Masamune toiled endlessly to become fit. Once he became skinny and handsome, he returns to his old neighborhood in order to carry out revenge against the girl that wronged him.
With the help of Aki’s maid, Masamune sets out to make her fall in love with him so that he can be the one to break her heart.
Whereas Girlfriend, Girlfriend had the main character start off with good intentions, Masamune-kun’s Revenge does not. His vengeance quickly turns into feelings, and you find that there are multiple girls with feelings for him.
However, while both series are often more focused on the “comedy” portion of romantic comedy, Masamune-kun’s Revenge does eventually move onto serious relationship development.
Osamake – Romcom Where the Childhood Friend Won’t Lose
Sueharu Maru, once a child actor and now just a normal high school boy, is considered lucky to have the constant company of his beautiful and popular childhood friend, Kuroha Shida. However, when Kuroha confesses to him, he immediately rejects her.
He still has his sights set on his first love – school idol and author, Shirokusa Kachi. Despite thinking he still has a chance, he finds out one day that she has a boyfriend which starts him on a complicated path of feelings.
Osamake isn’t as lewd as Girlfriend, Girlfriend as well as has a plot it tries to follow. However, both shows are ultimately about two girls who like the same guy and end up trying to gain his affection. It is just that they don’t share as well as they do in Girlfriend, Girlfriend.
Of course, the biggest difference between Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Osamake is that Girlfriend, Girlfriend is a comedy and Osamake is often trying to be more dramatic.
Quintessential Quintuplets
As his family is in some serious debt, Fuutaro Uesugi is a serious penny pincher. However, his great grades have landed him a higher than normal paying tutor job.
The problem is that his five wards, all sisters, are dumb as door nails and think he is a complete idiot.
However, to get his pay, he has to think of a way to get these five unique girls to study and learn.
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Quintessential Quintuplets are harem anime that actually play with the concept of harem in either comical or clever ways.
Quintessential Quintuplets invites fans to try their hardest to find a main girl by teasing a marriage and, as they are quintuplets, that girl could be any one of them. Girlfriend, Girlfriend twists the harem by making him just date all the girls immediately.
Interesting reinvention of classic harem set ups aside, you will still find the classic harem personality types in each series. Neither anime tried to change that.
Nisekoi
Ten years ago, Raku Ichijou made a promise with a childhood friend to meet again and use the key she holds to open the locket he wears around his neck then be together forever. In the present day, this heir apparent to an intimidating yakuza family continues to wait for his friend’s return while trying to be as uninvolved in family matters as possible.
However, when a rival gang invades his family’s turf, the family leaders decide Raku should start a romantic relationship with the other chief’s daughter, Chitoge.
While they pretend to be dating to maintain the peace, Raku is almost positive his classmate Kosaki Onodera is the girl he made his promise with.
While Nisekoi sticks to traditional rom-com-harem sensibilities, it, like Girlfriend, Girlfriend does feature an expanding harem that is obsessed with one guy.
Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend are decent harem anime, but frustrating as romance anime. Girlfriend, Girlfriend is honestly supposed to be more comedy than anything else so getting romantically invested is not wise. However, Nisekoi spends too much time trying to make you think he is going to choose one girl before switching focus to another. It repeats that cycle too much and becomes less fun each time.
Love Flops
One normal day, high school student Asahi Kashiwagi wakes up and watches a fortune teller’s predictions on TV. On his way to school, as according to the predictions, he has a variety of accidentally lewd encounters with five different people.
After these five clandestine meetings, he discovers that all five of them are new members of his class. What’s more, their encounters have all sparked the embers of love between him and each one of them.
Now he needs to follow his own heart else his love life flop and fizzle out.
One day, a main character goes from have one-to-no-girlfriends to suddenly having a whole harem full of girls that want to be his girlfriend. However, while Naoya in Girlfriend, Girlfriend welcomes his new girlfriend overlords with open arms, Asahi is not so welcoming to them because they are all comically troublesome.
While both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Love Flops are harem rom-coms, what they most have in common is a passion for intense and lewd comedy. In fact, they are both great comedies rather than anything else.

Aho Girl
Yoshiko Hanabatake is an idiot. So much so that even her own mother has given up hope on her.
However, her studious and terrifying childhood friend A-kun is up to the task of shutting down her shenanigans at every turn.
Aho Girl and Girlfriend, Girlfriend are by the same author. While the plots and romantic content of each show differ, the author is rather fond of violent, semi-lewd comedy that get really out of hand very quickly.
If you enjoyed how Girlfriend, Girlfriend turns the intensity from zero to one hundred when it delivers jokes, Aho Girl is very much that as well.
SYD
Ousai Private Academy used to be an all-girls school, but Takatoshi Tsuda is among one of the first male students. However, on his way to class, he is stopped by the student council president who needs a male’s point of view in order to better accommodate new male students.
As such, she ends up making him the vice president of the student council. However, this seemingly upstanding institution is not quite what it seems.
Girlfriend, Girlfriend isn’t meant to be a sexual comedy like SYD, but it still ends up that way. The real similarity here is that SYD and Girlfriend, Girlfriend go from zero to one hundred when it comes to comedy. There isn’t much build up, they just get real intense on you.
However, while there is a sort of harem in SYD in that the student council is all girls and there is one guy, they aren’t his harem no matter how much he wants them to be. Girlfriend, Girlfriend is a harem comedy, but SYD is really just a comedy.
Love Tyrant
When a strange girl named Guri comes knocking on Seiji Aino’s door asking him to kiss her or she will die, he mistakes her desperation as a sign of love.
He discovers that Guri is a wielder of the Kiss Note, a notebook where any pairing she writes will kiss and become a couple. She admits that she accidentally misspelt a name into Seijio’s name while indulging yaoi fantasies.
However, as she has yet to pair him with anyone, now if she doesn’t find someone to pair him up with, not only will she die, but he will remain a virgin forever as per the Kiss Note’s rules.
Romantic comedies are common, but rediculious rom-coms are actually rather rare. Both Girlfriend, Girlfriend and Love Tyrant are anime that are perfectly described as being rediculious – but they know it.
Both series have rom-com plots that they don’t take very seriously at all. They use them to make excellent and occasionally lewd jokes. However, Girlfriend, Girlfriend is actually rather grounded in reality. Love Tyrant occasionally slips the shackles of reality to be even more rediculious.
