It’s the positive attitude and energy that Kokoa Hoto exudes which allows her to become friends with anyone in just a few seconds. This is her story as she moves away from home to attend school and ends up working in a café for room and board. Of course, by very nature, she befriends everyone she comes in contact with, including the granddaughter of the cafe founder who is often seen with a talking rabbit.

Maika is a person with naturally bad luck, although much of that comes from her mean-looking eyes. These eyes have since prevented her from gaining part-time employment in order to fund her dreams of studying abroad. However, one day she meets a man named Dino who runs a very special café. Inside, the waitresses all adopt very specific personas for the customers, and Dino wants Maika to be his sadistic-type girl. However, despite having the eyes for it, Maika isn’t a sadist.
Think of Blend S like a more honest Is The Order a Rabbit. In it, it acknowledges that each girl in the cafe fills a trope, even if the comedy is that it is just an act. In Is The Order a Rabbit, the girls all fit a trope, but more traditionally don’t call attention to it. Still, they are both about cute girls working cafe jobs comically.
Hinako Note
In an effort at get better at speaking to people, country girl Hinako moves to Tokyo. She then intends to join the drama club at school, but complications arise when her boarding house turns out to be a secondhand bookstore.
Both shows are about similar looking girls, moving to a new town, and working at a cafe for room and board. Furthermore, the characters they become friends with are so similar that you can literally pair them up to their doppelganger in the other show.
Nekopara
Kashou Minazuki is the son of Japanese bakers who has recently started working at the patisserie La Soleil. At home, he and his sister Shigure enjoy the company of their six catgirls. Two wily ones, Chocola and Vanilla, join Kashou helping at the bakery while the others stay home with Shigure. One day while Chocola is out running errands, she happens across a little green-haired kitten that she brings home. Now, the Minazuki household has seven energetic catgirls!
Both anime series only aim to present you with cute characters that are comical in various ways. In Is The Order is A Rabbit, there is a talking rabbit. The quirk in Nekopara is that cat girls are real and are still pets. It is a little bit more ecchi with its shenanigans though.
For Fans of Cute Girls Doing Things
Non Non Biyori
Asahigaoka is rural village in the middle of nowhere, and for the five students who go to school there, their days are all about keeping the boredom at bay. All of different ages, their ways to entertain themselves never border on normal.
Both shows are profoundly minimal on plot, yet at the same time so entertaining. The girls are diverse in personality, crisply designed, and pretty adorable with their antics. Really, it is one of those, “you don’t know why you like it, but you do,” anime series.
K-on!
Upon entering high school, Yui is immediately entranced by the Light Music Club. The problem is, she can’t play an instrument. Deciding to join the club anyway, the other club members, despite disappointment in her lack of musical knowledge, allow her to join to prevent the club’s disbandment. Today begins Yui’s musical education!
Both series are built on the premise that if you have cute enough moe characters and good enough comedy, you don’t actually need a solid plot. However, K-on does have one, which has made it the more popular series.
Urara Meirocho
Labyrinth Town and its many districts is home to witches and diviners. On the outer area of this maze, young girls are trained to become “Urara,” women that can divine the answers to difficult questions. Chiya has accepted the invitation to join them, hoping these powers can help her find her mother.
Both series has a group of girls that are bound together by something in their life. In Is The Order a Rabbit, that thing is the cafe. In Urara Meirocho, that binding element is divination training. It has a supernatural twist to it, but the antics will be comfortingly familiar.
For Fans of Suggested Shoujo Ai
Yuru Yuri
After being reunited with her childhood friends in middle school, Akari is enticed to join the Amusement Club that Yui and Kyoko created in their own first year of middle school. They convince Akari to join, only for her to discover that the club’s only function is to amuse its members.
You will find that the girls in Yuru Yuri and Is the Order a Rabbit are pretty much mirrors of each other. However, the shoujo ai in Is the Order a Rabbit is more vague. Yuru Yuri is a bit more aggressive with it.
Kiniro Mosaic
Shinobu left Japan to do a homestay in England. There she grew close to her friend Alice, and despite the language barrier, they both expressed their sorrow when it was time to go home. Five years later, Shinobu receives a letter she doesn’t understand. It turns out to be from Alice detailing her upcoming homestay in Japan, and that she will be attending her high school.
Both shows are about that high energy moe comedy about new people in town. Furthermore, they both treat shoujo ai as a fan service sort of element instead of a serious romantic element.
Pan de Peace
Minami Tani believes there is nothing better than bread for breakfast. Her love unites her with three other girls that have similar unshakable feelings about delicious bread.
While Is The Order a Rabbit is a cafe anime, it doesn’t really have a lot of food worship. This…Does. It’s about cute girls who love bread and are cute and comical about it.
