Now Kazuma must deal with defeating an evil demon king, useless party members, and paying living expenses.
When it comes to comedy isekai series, there is really no finer example of them than Konosuba. In fact, much of the base generic fantasy plot that Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout establishes is exactly what it parodies. If you enjoy comically flawed characters interacting with each other, it is a must.
Dungeon of Black Company
Kinji has finally perfected his NEET lifestyle through shrewd money management. However, just when he is able to hang out for the rest of his life, he is transported to another world. There he is immediately shoved into a harsh mining job for a black company that cares only about profits and quotas. However, as the world’s laziest and most clever NEET, Kinji is determined to be a layabout.
Genderbending the protagonist is pretty creative, and so, too, is having the protagonist work for a black company in a fantasy world. Alongside both of them trying new twists, they are actually pretty solid comedies. However, Dungeon of Black Company is really carried by the main character rather than the main duo.
Cautious Hero – The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious
In the divine realm, Gods and Goddesses are assigned worlds in peril to summon heroes to guide on their quest to save those worlds. The Goddess of Healing, Ristarte, is assigned a difficult S-class world and told to pick a hero to defeat the Demon King. While her choices are underwhelming, one low level hero with super stats catches her eye! Seiya Ryuuguuin is indeed a powerful hero, but he also has the problematic quirk of being overly cautious. His desire to stay on the safe side, over-preparing and over-training for all encounters, is a source of frustration for all.
Both are comedy isekai series with a twist, obviously. However, the great majority of the comedy in both series comes from the butting of heads between the main character and his companion who have good chemistry with each other.
The Fruit of Evolution – Before I Knew It, My Life Had Made It
Seiichi Hiragi is a fat loser who has been outcasted and bullied at school. However, one day it was announced by a being claiming to be god that they would all be transported to another world, but had to wait for the summoning to be completed. The school formed up into groups, but Seiichi was shunned. This caused him to be transported elsewhere when they went to a new world. Hungry, he ate a fruit that turned out to be the fruit of evolution, spiraling his life to new heights.
Both series are isekai series that take a more laid-back approach to plot and instead focuses on the character relationships and jokes. Furthermore, both series feature characters that are changed in their new isekai life. However, instead of becoming a cute girl, Seiichi simply becomes a hotter man.
For Fans of People Who Love Each Other, But Won’t Admit It
Kaguya-Sama – Love is War
Considered a genius, Miyuki Shirogane leads the student council in his prestigious school. Alongside his beautiful and wealthy vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, the two are regarded as the perfect couple despite no romantic relationship. The truth is, however, they both have feelings for each other, but neither can confess. This is the battle of two people trying to get the other to confess first!
It is kind of difficult to watch how the characters interact with each other in Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout, and not see the similarities between the relationship in Kaguya-sama. However, even if it lacks the romance element of Kaguya-sama, since the relationship does progress in that series, both series are ultimately enjoyed for their jokes.
Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It
One day, beautiful female scientist Ayame told her co-worker Shinya that she loved him. Both being rational people, they expressed their lack of experience with romance and decided to use science as a way to concretely conclude if they did indeed love each other.
Much like in Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout, Science Fell in Love is all about two people that clearly like each other, but keep each other at arm’s length due to reasons. This leads into the comedy in both shows as jokes are made about how much of a match they are for each other.
My Senpai is Annoying
At a trading company, junior salesperson Futaba Igarashi has flourished under the guidance of her senpai, Harumi Takeda. However, while he teases her about her short stature, Igarashi has come to admire Takeda for his reliability in the workplace as their relationship continues to develop.
It is difficult to create a series where two people clearly like each other, but no progression happens beyond that, and have all that still be likable. My Senpai is Annoying excels in that while Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout uses it purely for its comedy. Both series are cute and really rather easy comedies to enjoy.
For Fans of Gender-Bending Comedies
Maria Holic
In search of true love, Kanako Miyamae transfers to Ame no Kisaki Catholic School, inspired by how her parents fell in love with each other there. However, the school is now split between the sexes, so all Kanako has to choose from is women. When she meets the beautiful Mariya Shidou, Kanako believes she has found that special someone, except she is actually a he.
While there are more than a few genderbending comedies, it’s more difficult to find some that aren’t overly lewd. Both of these series have that in common as well as the fact that they set themselves up strongly for romance, though Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout is more of a “will they, won’t they, do you even want them to?” sort of affair.
Magical Girl Me
Saki Uno is a teen girl who is also part of the unpopular idol duo, Magical Twins. Despite their lack of popularity, she loves the duo. However, her peaceful life ends when a suspicious man forces his way into her house, informs her that her mother was a magical girl, and he wants Saki to be one too. Skeptical, but accepting the offer after she learns her crush is in danger, she transforms. Her body, being unsuitable for combat, is radically changed, into that of a man.
While Magical Girl Ore features genderbending from girl to boy, it it sets itself up as a similarly lovable comedy. Both series feature main characters that are genderbent, then work with their best friends to fight evil. However, in Magical Girl Me, her best friend is also genderbent.
Gonna Be The Twin Tail
Twin tails are the glory of mankind – at least according to Souji Mitsuka. Souji likes to spend his time rating the twin tails on girls, but when monsters from space attack to claim the twin tails for themselves, he is enlisted by a strange woman to fight them off. Suddenly, he transforms into the Twin Tail Warrior Tail-Red!
Both series are ultimately comedy anime series that feature a main character who is genderbent and becomes incredibly powerful. However, Gonna Be The Twin-Tail leans more on parody-style jokes whereas Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout is focused on joking between the characters.
