For Fans of Dark Magical Girls
Madoka Magica
Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are your typical middle school girls, but one day they encounter a cute creature named Kyuubey that offers to grant them one wish. In exchange for their wish, they must become magical girls and protect humanity from witches. While Sayaka accepts right away, Madoka is more hesitant, not knowing what she would wish for. However, her decision is even further delayed when the mysterious Homura Akemi, a transfer student, begs her not to accept.
Both of these series are subversion of the magical girl genre where everything is supposed to be bright and happy. Instead, in both shows, everything is dark and miserable. While Magical Girl Site is just overt violence and suffering, Madoka Magica works hard to give you emotional connection to the characters.
Magical Girl Raising Project
There’s a rumor going around about a new game called the Magical Girl Raising Project. The rumor states that one in thousands who play it have a chance to become a magical girl, and the rumors turn out to be true. This chance allows them to have supreme beauty, strength, and other abilities so that they can help humanity. However, when 16 magical girls end up in one district, the administration announces that only half may remain. At first it is a race to get the most magical candy, but as time goes on, the game twists into something much darker.
D-Do you just want to watch magical girls kill each other? Because that’s what you get with both of these shows. Though Magical Girl Site is much darker, there is plenty of darkness in Magical Girl Raising Project too once things get to a certain breaking point.
For Fans of Internet Curses
Hell Girl
It is said that those who hold a powerful grudge can access a particular website at midnight. By entering a name here, that person can be ferried straight to hell. This is the tale of Ai Enma, the Hell Girl that carries out those orders.
Both of these shows are about obtaining something through the internet. In Magical Girl Site, it was her magical girl powers while in Hell Girl they basically hire Ai to do their dirty work. Both shows have a strong emphasis on suffering, abuse, and vengeance.
Accel World
Haruyuki Arita is a loser at school, constantly ridiculed by his peers. Like so many, his only escape is into the virtual world of video games. One day, his ‘leet’ video game skills attract the attention of Kuroyukihime, the school’s popular student council Vice President. She introduces Haru to a new game called Brain Burst that accelerates the human cognitive process to the point at which time appears to stop. However, it is really actually an Augmented Reality Massively Multiplayer Online (ARMMO) Fighting Game where people fight each other in fierce duels in order to obtain Burst Points which can be spent for acceleration abilities in the real world.
Like Magical Girl Site, Accel World is about getting magnificent powers via an internet program. However, unlike Magical Girl Site, this series is more action oriented and not nearly as brutally dark. It is more of a sci-fi sort of comedy show. However, the do share a main character crawling out of varying degrees of a miserable existence.
Serial Experiments Lain
Introverted Lain Iwakura finds herself one of many girls to receive an e-mail from classmate Chisa Yomoda, even though Chisa Yomoda recently committed suicide. Averse to technology, Lain soon finds herself able to enter the Wired, a network system similar to the internet. From there, her life gets turned upside down as she finds herself the target of mysterious men and mixed up in a series of cryptic mysteries.
While both shows heavily focus around a dark depressing atmosphere and a mystery surrounding the internet, Serial Experiments Lain is a philosophical and plot-complex show. It’s not just an abuse and violence-fest like Magical Girl Site, but both shows do surround two girls that become wrapped up in something dark.
For Fans of Terrible Human Beings
Elfen Lied
Lucy is a special breed of human known as a Diclonius, sporting a pair of small horns and telekinetic powers. All her life she has been held captive in a government facility. However, after staging a bloody break out one night, she is hit in the head and sent tumbling over a cliff. Washing up on shore with amnesia, she is taken in by some college students who are about to be pulled into the bloody world of government conspiracy.
Did you enjoy how every human is just terrible in Magical Girl Site and were happy when they got maimed? Well, Elfen Lied is the same way. You watch cute girls suffer horrible abuse and then lash out violently with their psychic powers. It is just endless suffering and overt violence in both shows.
Shigofumi
When someone dies, their last words – words that couldn’t be said while alive – are sent in letters called shigofumi. Fumika is a mail carrier for these letters. A mail carrier is supposed to be a deceased human that looks the same as they did when they died, but despite this, Fumika is still aging.
Unlike Magical Girl Site, the main character doesn’t really do much other than deliver mail. However, if the show intrigued with its stories of abuse and suffering, many of the letters in Shigofumi deal with these topics as well. Of course, Shigofumi isn’t really as violent or action heavy either.
King’s Game
Nobuaki Kanazawa is a new transfer student who has closed his heart to his fellow classmates, determined not to make friends. However, due to their persistence, he begins to open up. Just as he does, his worse fears comes to life, the King’s Game starts on his cell phone. Now his classmates must play a cruel game where all orders must be obeyed. If they don’t, they die.
There are things that bring out the worst in people, and both of these shows will show you how. Both shows are just very much mindless and brutal deaths, but if that’s what you watched Magical Girl Site for, then King’s Game can satisfy your bloodlust too.
