tiger and bunny anime

Tiger and Bunny

In Stern Bild City, those who use their special powers for either good or evil are called NEXT, and heroes are regularly featured on TV catching the bad guys, getting paid for their entertainment. The hero known as Wild Tiger has been putting on less thrilling performances lately due to his inability to cooperate with other heroes, but when he teams up with his by-the-books new partner he nicknames Bunny, his luck might just turn around.

While Tiger & Bunny is about heroes rather than detectives, it has a similar premise. Two polar opposites in the trade are put together as partners. From there, things go up and down hill be between them.

hakata tonkotsu ramens anime

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

In the mix is Banba, a detective investigating hitman companies in the area and Lin, a hitman that is fed up with his lack of jobs. After being refused pay for a target that killed themselves, Lin is tasked with killing Banba, but instead asks him to team up.

While not about detectives so much as it is about a detective and a hitman, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens features the same sort of bickering partnership where two vastly different people end up working together to take down bad people.

bungo stray dogs anime group

Bungou Stray Dogs

The orphanage that Atsushi Nakajima has been living at has been recently plagued by a tiger that only he can see. Blaming him for the incident, they kick him out. Now homeless, he wanders the streets until he meets the eccentric Osamu Dazai and saves him from drowning. As it turns out, Dazai is a supernatural detective and agrees to help him solve the mystery.

Both series are about detectives, but Bungou Stray Dogs does have that element of supernatural to it. Regardless, Stray Dogs also features a sort of bickering partnership between characters as well as a lot of different personality clashes.

For Fans of Detective Mysteries

psycho pass anime

Psycho-Pass

In the 22nd century, the justice system has changed. The Sibyl System now determines the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for criminal intent. This has become known as their Psycho-Pass. Once criminal intent has been identified, Inspectors like Akane Tsunemori are in charge of subjugating them. However, this tough job is not without dangers. This is why Inspectors are paired with Enforcers, like Shinya Kougami, latent criminals with just the right amount of psychopathy to keep other criminals in their place.

Millionaire Detective is more of your classic modern detective show, but Psycho-Pass features crime fighting in a dystopian sci-fi world. Both feature detective partners that are the opposite of each other and believe in using different means to catch criminals.

Enter brilliant detective Akihito Narihisago. After his daughter was murdered, he sought vengeance on the killer and is currently serving his sentence. However, under the name Sakaido, he enters the ID-wells in order to help his fellow detectives piece together crimes.

blood blockade battlefront anime

Blood Blockade Battlefront

Vampires, fishmen, supersonic monkeys – They are all normal residents living alongside humans in Hellsalem’s Lot, formerly known as New York City. When a gate between Earth and the Beyond popped up there three years ago, old NYC became dominated by monsters, and now Libra, a secret organization, is tasked with keeping it in order. After hobbyist photographer Leonardo Watch obtains the All-Seeing Eyes of the Gods, he finds himself recruited into Libra.

Blood Blockade Battlefront is definitely a very different setting compared to Millionaire Detective, but that setting allows for even more creative mysteries and a bigger emphasis on action. As it has these sort of supernatural powers, it is less about the intellectual side of detective work and more on the action side.

For Fans of Money is Power

c control anime

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

One day, he is told of a place called the Eastern Financial District where money flows like water, but only if they offer their future as collateral. Both series put a big emphasis on money and how important it is in the world. However, C is more of an alternate reality show, but can be just as clever with the way it handles its intricate plot.

the great pretender anime

Great Pretender

After life turned him down the path of crime, Makoto Edamura cockily thinks himself the best swindler in Japan. However, after trying to swindle a tourist only for the tourist to swap it back, he finds the police on his trail. Making his escape, he runs into this tourist again, a move that would take him all the way across the sea to Los Angeles. There, he learns that this tourist was in fact a man called Laurent Thierry, a successful confidence man, who wants to recruit him onto his team.

Instead of following the detectives like in Millionaire Detective, Great Pretender follows international thieves. Both shows have a big emphasis on money, either spending or getting it, but they are also excessively clever in their mysteries/heists. It makes it quite thrilling to watch.
