William Moriarty is the second son of the noble Moriarty family. During the day, he is a mathematics professor, but at night he uses his keen mind in order to work as a consultant for individuals with a particular need for his intellect. He has dedicated himself to revenge against nobility in order to crumble the crushing social hierarchy that oppresses much of England.
Sherlock Holmes, in all media, is a pretty well-beat dead horse. However, turning the focus on his nemesis is a bit of a new twist for it. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Moriarty the Patriot, then head on down below.

For Fans of the Varying Definition of Justice
Psycho-Pass
In the 22nd century, the justice system has changed. The Sibyl System now determines the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for criminal intent. This has become known as their Psycho-Pass. Once criminal intent has been identified, Inspectors like Akane Tsunemori are in charge of subjugating them. However, this tough job is not without dangers. This is why Inspectors are paired with Enforcers, like Shinya Kougami, latent criminals with just the right amount of psychopathy to keep other criminals in their place.
While Psycho-Pass is futuristic, it has the same skewed sense of justice as Moriarty the Patriot. You see the morality of the situation through a distinct lens. However, Psycho-Pass does focus on the police force while Moriarty the Patriot focuses on the criminals.
Detective Conan
Despite his teenage age, Shinichi Kudou is one of the great detectives of the world. However, one day when he witnesses some illegal going-ons, criminals catch him and dose him with a mysterious drug. Next thing he knows, he is waking up as a little boy again. Now Shinichi must try to solve his own mystery while stuck as seven-year-old.
Shinichi, the main character in Detective Conan, is both a detective and a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. That is why he takes Conan as a moniker. While Moriarty is very directly tied to Sherlock Holmes, being the literal other side of the coin, Detective Conan is only inspired by the mysteries. If you wanted more of a straightforward mystery show, this is for you.
Death Parade
After death, there is no heaven or hell, but there is a bar that decides whether you reincarnate or disappear into oblivion. Pairs of the recently deceased must play a random game which decides their fate.
While Death Parade is of a more supernatural genre, like Moriarty the Patriot, it is episodic and examines various aspects of morality. Like Moriarty, some of the characters have their own sense of justice that is debatable as to whether it is right or wrong.
For Fans of Dueling Geniuses
Monster
Dr. Kenzou Tenma is a renowned brain surgeon with a perfect life, at least until one night when he is faced with a difficult decision. Both a small boy and the mayor are brought in with mortal injuries, and he can only save one. Naturally, he saves the boy, but when a series of murders begins to happen around him, all evidence points to the boy he saved.
One cannot look at Moriarty without thinking of Johan in Monster. Unfortunately, while you will get to know Johan plenty, he is not the actual main character of the show, merely the villain. Still, his twisted sense of justice shines throughout the story, making Monster a story carried by the villain.
Death Note
Light Yagami is a high school prodigy and genius. However, he has an ever-increasing boredom and disdain for the rotten violent world. One day, he happens upon a notebook, called a Death Note, which states that if you write a name in it, the person will die. To his surprise, the notebook’s claims turn out to be true. This Death Note, the property of the Shinigami gods of death, gives Light the power to change this world and he decides to become its new God by executing all criminals.
While Death Note is both modern and supernatural-themed, like Moriarty, it follows an anti-hero with their own unique sense of justice. They maintain a accepted face to society, but as they carry out their sense of justice through various means, they also find themselves locked in a battle of wits with a similarly clever nemesis.
Code Geass
The Holy Empire of Britannia has established itself as the dominant military nation, starting after their conquest of Japan, now named Area 11. Under Britannia’s tyranny, a number of resistance groups rose up to fight for their freedom. Enter Lelouch Lamperouge, the exiled prince of Britannia who has been sent to live in Japan. One day, after finding himself caught in the crossfire in a battle between Britannia and insurgents, Lelouch is able to escape with his life after meeting C.C., a mysterious girl who grants him the power of absolute obedience.
While Code Geass is futuristic, it still has that uptight colonial British-ness to many of the characters. As the British Empire is also world spanning, the classism is still alive and well. However, what it most has in common with Moriarty the Patriot is that the main character is an anti-hero who uses cleverness to manipulate people.
For Fans of Older Time Period Setting
Black Butler
Young Earl Ciel Phantomhive is a noble in the service of Queen Victoria of England. Not only does he handle the business affairs of his family’s toy business, but he travels around solving mysteries that irk Her Majesty’s kingdom. However, he doesn’t do it alone. After the death of his parents and in his darkest hour, Ciel formed a pact with a demon to help him get revenge on those that wronged him in exchange for his soul afterwards. Now this demon poses as his butler, Sebastian, a man with superhuman abilities.
If you enjoy that sophisticated Victorian England setting, then Black Butler is your next best bet. However, unlike the grounded Moriarty the Patriot, Black Butler is more of a supernatural show with a vengeance plot. You also don’t get to see as much of that classism as you do in Moriarty since it focuses on a noble.
91 Days
Set during Prohibition, a man named Avilio returns to Lawless, a town famed for brewing illegal liquor, after the murder of his family by the mafia. A mysterious letter prompted him to return and infiltrate the Vanetti family to get his revenge. This anime tells the story of 91 days leading to the tragic end between Avilio and Nero Vanetti, the Don’s son.
Both stories are mafia stories, but in different ways. 91 Days is more your classic vengeance tale with the main character using his wits to infiltrate deeper. Moriarty the Patriot keeps those close bonds at bay by following a consultant that doesn’t have the same sort of connection to those they work with.
Joker Game
With World War II looming, foreign information has become a valuable asset. In Japan, they established the D Agency. Under Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki, eight agents have been trained to infiltrate every facet of foreign society with their biggest weapon being the ability to manipulate people.
While Joker Game is about spies, it takes place in a similar time period and features the same sort of focus on the seedier underbelly of society. More so than that, like Moriarty, much of the series is about the characters being clever in their actions.
