For Fans of Extreme Slice of Life Comedy

daily lives of high school boys anime

The Daily Lives of High School Boys

This is the tale of three boys that roam the halls of the all-boys school of Sanada North. Their lives are filled with nothing but giant robot drama and true love stories, at least in their imaginations. In reality, these three boys are nothing special, but they try their best to pass the time.

Think of this show as something like a gender swapped Nichijou. It follows boys instead of girls. However, while the comedy in Daily Lives of High School Boys is highly random, it is more grounded in realty than Nichijou.

azumanga-daioh-anime

Azumanga Daioh

Chiyo Mihama fears she will be one of the strangest students in the freshman class. She is, in fact, a ten-year-old genius that has been moved up a few grades. However, she isn’t the only oddball to be found. With a series of strange girls in her homeroom, Chiyo begins to feel right at home dealing with all the strange situations that come about.

Azumanga Diaoh and Nichijou are like kissing cousins. They are both very absurd and random comedies and both shows push that comedy above and beyond the surly realms of what you can do with the absurd. They are perhaps the most similar shows on this list.

school-rumble-anime

School Rumble

Sophomore high school student Tenma Tsukamoto is on a quest to confess her feelings to the boy she likes. Kenji Harima, a delinquent, is on the same quest. This is the story of the complicated world of one-sided romance.

If you wished Nichijou had more of a focus on its characters rather than its situations, then School Rumble is a good follow up. While School Rumble is fairly random, it is more of a comedy about its characters that set themselves up for disaster than  anything else.

For Fans of Slice of Life Oddities

anime series like miss kobayashis dragon maid

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Miss Kobayashi is a programmer that lives alone in her apartment. However, one day a giant green dragons ends up on her doorstep and transforms into a women in a maid outfit. Apparently Kobayashi had gotten drunk one night and ended up saving this dragon. Now, dragon Tooru intends to repay her debt through housework.

Although Nichijou maintains a focus that is slice of life in nature, there are some very weird occurrences that goes on, but everyone treats as normal. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon maid is the same way. While there is magic involved to hide their dragon appearances, even the people that see them as dragons treat them as pretty normal people, but there within lies the comedy.

All six Osomatsu brothers from the Osomatsu-san anime jumping in the air

Osomatsu-San

In the Matsuno household, there are six identical siblings -the self-centered Osomatsu, the manly Karamatsu, the reasonable Choromatsu, the cynical Ichimatsu, the hyper Juushimatsu, and the cute Todomatsu. Despite all being adults, they all live as NEETS. This is their journey of trying to become proper adults.

Both Nichijou and Osomatsu-san are highly Japanese comedies. This means that, unlike western comedies, they like to move from one joke to the next at a very fast pace and the jokes are often random and unexpected.

pop team epic anime

Pop Team Epic

Popuko is small and quick to anger. Pipiumi is tall and serene. Together these two high school girls swear like sailors and get up to all sorts of insane and meta activities.

If you only liked Nichijou for its random comedy and not any of its other charms, like its characters, then Pop Team Epic is for you. There is no particular plot and the characters aren’t particularly lovable, but it does so much random and parody comedy as such a feverish pace that at least one joke is going to tickle your hardened heart.

For Fans of Moe Comedy

lucky star anime

Lucky Star

Lucky Star follows the average, but surprisingly eventful lives of four high school girls, led by the short and lazy otaku Konata Izumi. Throughout their hijinks, they discuss humorous observations about the world around them, ranging from everything from otaku culture to the correct way of eating foods.

Lucky Star is a little slower with its comedy, and most of it is of an otaku nature. However, like Nichijou, it features moe girls going about their daily life and getting into all sorts of shenanigans.

Hanako with comical doe eyes, Olivia scheming, and Kasumi looking sweet in the Asobi Asobase anime

Asobi Asobase

One day, Olivia – blonde-haired, foreign-looking transfer student – lies to air-headed Hanako about her English skills. Despite her looks, she has actually lived in Japan almost all her life and can’t speak English very well, but succeeded in tricking Hanako. This bit of mischief sparked a series of small games in the classroom between them, annoying the nearby deadpan Kasumi who hates games after being teased mercilessly by her older sister for always losing. However, the mischief eventually draws all three of them into the Pastime Club, a club Hanako created just to goof off.

While this isn’t quite as tempting as Nichijou was, due to its lack of a legendary reputation, if you like extreme facial expressions that sets off slice of life comedy, Asobi Asobase is for you. It draws its comedy more from real life than Nichijou with the only extreme factor being the occasional change in the face.

plastic neesan anime

Plastic Neesan

Iroe Genma is often referred to as Elder Sister, despite her short height. She is the president of the model club with her two very different underclassmen. Together they attempt to carry out club activities, despite many distractions.

This seems like Nichijou as another comedy about three girls getting into shenanigans, but surprisingly, Plastic Neesan is similarly as insane in its comedy. It looks more normal, but it is not. If you enjoyed the random fast pace of Nichijou, this is another for your must watch list.
