After falling asleep playing games, a gamer woke up in the game world, but as a skeleton. While he is equipped well, his appearance is too frightening to live the peaceful life he wants. Yet, after meeting a beautiful elf woman, he may find himself a different path full of adventure.
For a series that started with a rape as the literal first scene, this was a surprisingly enjoyable light-hearted adventure. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Skeleton Knight in Another World, then head on down below.

For Fans of Odd-Faced Heroes
Overlord
As the final hour approaches the life cycle of the MMO Yggdrasil, Momonga, a powerful wizard and leader of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, is there to see it off. However, to his surprise, the servers don’t go down and even stranger is that all the NPC characters have come alive with their own unique personalities.
Most obviously, the similarity is the skeleton head. Other than both being isekai series about skeleton-headed protagonists stuck on their game characters, Overlord differs vastly in its more intense tone and slight world domination plot.
Tsukimichi – Moonlit Fantasy
Makoto Misumi is just an ordinary boy, but one night after learning his parents were from another world and guaranteed their travel to Japan by agreeing to give up what they care about most one day, he is transported to another world. Unfortunately, the goddess of that world finds him ugly and in all ways repulsive. She flings him to the corner of the world with her only gift being the ability to understand, speak, and write monster languages. With gifts from his previous worlds’ god, Tsukuyomi, and enhanced abilities from growing up in a non-magical world, Makoto sets out to make a life for himself.
Both series feature protagonists who have to hide their face in their new isekai world because they might get shunned because of it. Interestingly enough, both series also maintain a similar balance between adventure and cute character moments.
Goblin Slayer
A young priestess fresh out of the temple is excited to start her life as an adventurer. On her first day, she joins an adventuring party to go slay some goblins. However, like so many young adventure parties before them, they underestimate the goblins. It ends with two dead, one viciously raped, and the priestess saved from fate by a man whose only mission in life is to slay all the goblins.
Skeleton Knight in Another World and Goblin Slayer have the absolutely bizarre similarity for using rape once in the first episode to shock people and then being very tame afterwards. They also share a passion for helmeted protagonists. It is just that Goblin Slayer maintains a more serious tone.
For Fans of Game Powers in a Fantasy Land
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
Yuna much prefers staying home and playing her favorite VRMMO instead of going to school. During an update, she receives a strange and powerful bear outfit. It was overpowered, but too embarrassing to wear in-game. However, she finds herself suddenly transported to the world of the game, and her bear suit becomes her best chance of surviving.
Both of these series are people trapped as their game characters in a kind of embarrassing way. However, Kuma Bear is played more on the comical side, but both do lean towards light-heartedness.
She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man
Kagami is a VRMMMO player of a game called Arch Earth Online. He is a veteran player that helped form a kingdom for mages and plays the wise old man. However, one day he purchases an appearance change item with currency about to expire and tests out what it would be like if his character was a super cute girl. However, after falling asleep, he finds himself still in the body of a girl and the game feels a little more real than it used to.
Both series are about people getting trapped on their game characters, but appearing differently than they normally would. She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man differs in that it is in that actual game world, however.
Death March to a Parallel World Rhapsody
Suzuki Ichirou is a programmer for a game company, and in order to keep up with demands, he frequently sets his work pace to “death march” in which he works for days straight with little sleep and without going home. During one of these death marches, he falls asleep and when he wakes up, he is somehow transported inside of one of his games.
Skeleton Knight in Another World and Death March are both isekai series where the player of a game ends up in that game. Death March has more of a focus on using the game systems rather than just using the magic outright to discover it works, though.
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord
In his MMORPG, Takuma boast overwhelming strength and was referred to as the demon king. However, one day he gets summoned to another world, still in the appearance of his character. There he discovers two girls that use the same magic he uses to turn others into slaves. However, due to his magic reflect skill, the spell was turned back on them.
Both series feature men who get placed in another world as their game character, but that world isn’t necessarily from the game itself. The big difference here is the How Not to Summon a Demon Lord is more ecchi.
Demon Lord Retry
Akira Oono manages the MMORPG Infinity Game. After 15 years, he has decided to shut down the servers. However, at midnight, he finds himself in the game and transformed into Hakuto Kunai, the demon lord of the MMO. Further puzzling things, he saves a girl that he does not remember creating in the game.
Both series feature people who end up in what is seemly the game they were playing, but with a vast wealth of power. However, Skeleton Knight in Another World doesn’t seem like the game world whereas Demon Lord Retry has him finding things he didn’t put in his game.
For Fans of Being Unintentionally Amazing
Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?
In ancient times, those who saved humanity settled outside of the infamous Last Dungeon. Their descendants have all been strong enough to survive in the area by building a community. Lloyd is one such descendant, but the weakest in the village. Hoping to grow strong, he heads to the Kingdom of Azami to enroll in their military academy. However, in this starter zone, Lloyd’s powers seem otherworldly to everyone around him.
Both series essentially follow wildly powerful characters that stand out in their situation. However, Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies is often playing this up more for comedy since he doesn’t necessarily realize how powerful he is.
The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
The Demon Lord Varvatos is a power unrivaled. However, being at the top with no challenges and no one who is unafraid enough to be a friend is lonely, so he decides to reincarnate. In his new life as a boy named Ard, he aims to have perfectly average powers, except that everyone in this new age has grown so weak. While he remains overpowered, he has a singular goal of amassing meaningful friendships.
Both series put a focus on a person in what is essentially a new world for them. Yet, they came with amazing powers and are able to recognize that they are perhaps too amazing for the world. As such, both series have them often hold back their powers unless they really need them.
Bofuri – I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense
After receiving an invitation from a friend, Kaede Honjou starts playing the VRMMO game New World Online as a character named Maple. However, in her desire to not get hurt, she puts all her stats in Vitality. This makes her move very slowly, unable to use magic, and get attacked by even the smallest creatures. However, it does allow her impenetrable defense and her gear she finds while wandering grants her a one-hit counter skill. And so, her adventures begin.
While Skeleton knight in Another World follows a plot, it is a lot of small adventures that often end positively despite the overall dark implications. Bofuri is watching a girl wholesomely stomp hardcore MMO players with a smile on her face. Different situations, but both series are rather interesting light-hearted fantasies where the plot isn’t so grand and sweeping.
