In order to sow chaos and discord among the human kingdom, the Demon King Tasogare abducted the beloved human princess, Syalis. In an effort to rescue her, a mighty hero sets forth. Meanwhile, held in the demon castle, Princess Syalis discovers that being held captive is quite boring. She decides to sleep away her time awaiting rescue, but… She can’t sleep. Cheap bedding, insomnia, and demonic snores plague her as she tries to get a solid night’s sleep.
I was skeptical about how this would pan out, as it is based around just the one joke and has a standard length episode run time, but I’ll be a teddy bear jail-keeper, they make it work really well. Anime Like Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
For Fans of Sleepy Characters
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
For Tanaka, being listless is a way of life. He spends his every waking moment looking for ways to conserve his energy. However, it seems the whole world is out to change his lazy ways.
Like Syalis, Tanaka is always a bit sleepy. Essentially, Tanaka and Syalis are both looking for ways to be left alone so they can catch some shut-eye. The comedy comes from people actively trying to prevent that.
Laid-Back Camp
After moving, Nadeshiko decides to go see Mount Fuji. She manages to bike pretty far, but has to turn back because of the weather and ends up fainting. When she wakes up, she finds herself somewhere she has never been and no way to find her way back. It is in this wilderness where she is saved by Rin, a girl who was out camping by herself.
While Nadeshiko isn’t quite as sleepy, I mean she did lay down to take a nap on a hike, so… Anyway, what these series have in common is a certain sense of calmness about them. They are real chill series that throw out some jokes, but never get too intense. Laid-Back Camp does feature some gorgeous visuals as well.
For Fans of Comfy Fantasy
As Miss Beelzebub Likes
Myurin, skilled in realm administration, has been hired on in the Kingdom of Pandemonium where the fallen angels dwell. There he will be working with the feared Beelzebub, one of the seven princes of hell. However, he discovers that Beelzebub isn’t quite as fearsome. In fact, he is really a girl and is obsessed with fluffy things. So begins the tale of how Myurin learns that nothing is as it seems in this kingdom.
Both shows have incredibly similar plots in that they don’t have plots, just ways to get you to laugh. It basically takes something that should be serious or scary, and makes it cute and fluffy. Both also have a similar sort of moe element to all the creatures as well.
Humanity Has Declined
After constantly declining birth rates, human civilization is almost extinct. The few humans left now coexist with fairies who have extremely advanced technology and very little regard for humans safety. The story follows a mediator between humans and fairies that tries to make it so both races can live peacefully.
Both shows are fantasy anime that don’t try to be that generic action fantasy type. While Humanity Has Declined is also quite funny, you will note a distinct sense of melancholy to it given the setting. That aside, both shows are also basically about random shenanigans that a human finds themselves in.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Miss Kobayashi is a programmer that lives alone in her apartment. However, one day a giant green dragons ends up on her doorstep and transforms into a women in a maid outfit. Apparently Kobayashi had gotten drunk one night and ended up saving this dragon. Now, dragon Tooru intends to repay her debt through housework.
Both series have incredibly similar comedy. It is basically just skits of different slice of life moments, but in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, it isn’t demons, it is dragons. Furthermore, Kanna is just a dragon Syalis in so many ways.
For Fans of Humans Surrounded By Demons
Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun
Iruma Suzuki has had a tough life. His parents are irresponsible, so he must work to earn money to take care of himself. One day, he discovers that his parents have sold him to the demon, Sullivan. Afraid at first, he relaxes when he discovers that the demon merely wants a grandchild. As Sullivan is the headmaster of the demon school Babyls, he enrolls Iruma. However, Iruma soon discovers that as the grandchild of Sullivan, he is now expected to take the throne of Demon King.
Both series follow humans that have pretty forcibly been taken to their new demon-infested surroundings. There you see the demons really aren’t so bad. While Iruma isn’t quite the same terror towards these demons as Syalis is, both series do comedy really well for what they are. Iruma is a little less fluffy with it’s plot, though.
Somali and the Forest Spirit
With humanity all but extinct after severe prosecution, the world is ruled over by spirits and all manner of strange creatures. One day, a golem that serves as guardian of the forest meets a young human girl. She has no memory of her parents, but the golem decides to at least seek out other humans to return her.
While Somali and the Forest Spirit has its cute little comedy moments, it is, unlike Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, a more serious show. However, what it most has in common is how one little human girl can bend the will of terrifying spirits and demons.
Interviews With Monster Girls
Although not completely common, Ajin, or demi-humans, have become a part of society. High school biology teacher Tetsuo Takahashi is increasingly interested in Ajin for research, but having never met one himself, he let it be. He was going to give up until he found out that not only are three students in his school demi-humans, but a fellow teacher as well. As he sets up interviews with them, Tetsuo finds out that they have both human and demi problems to overcome.
Both shows offer you some nicely themed episodic comedy with very little actual plot. However, Interviews With Monster Girls definitely plays the human main character as the straight man with its comedy, even more so than the deadpan Syalis.
The Devil is a Part-Timer
Right on the verge of taking over the world, evil Demon Lord Satan was foiled by the hero Emilia and was forced to retreat through a dimensional portal. He ends up in this world where he is without powers and without money. In order to pay his way, he gets a part-timer job slinging fast food.
Both series take a classic fantasy story, and then makes it unique by doing the unexpected with it. You see these human girls progressively surrounded by demons in their surroundings, but those demons pretty much just act like slightly odd people.
