Space Battleship Yamato 2202

Space Battleship Yamato

In the year 2199, Earth is nearly destroyed by an alien race known as Gamilas. In its desperation, the Earth Defense Force was established to be their last line of defense. However, when they receive a communication, they are tempted into the depths of space to the planet Iscander in search of a device to restore Earth. To make this 148,000-light-year trek, the formidable Space Battleship Yamato and its crew are tasked with navigating the Gamila Empire to save the human race.

If the title didn’t make it clear what series was the msin subject of parody, your first glance at the captain in Tiramisu should clear up any mystery. Tiramisu parodies a lot of space shows, but this is the main one. The good news is, if you really like mecha/space anime, this is a great watch.

macross zero anime

Macross

After a mysterious spaceship crashes into Earth, humanity is panicked to find that they are not alone. To prepare for the inevitable visit, the now unified Earth repurposes the ship for defense. However, on its maiden voyage, they discover a fleet of spaceships belonging to the alien race dubbed the Zentradi. Unfortunately, their new ship, the Macross, opens fire and sparks war. In an attempt to escape, the ship and the city it was in, is transported to the far reaches of space. This is the danger-filled tale of those caught in the middle.

Depending on which Macross series you watch, it might actually be more similar to Tiramisu because of its light-hearted nature. However, while the Macross themes can be a little blurred with other mecha series parody (because all mecha series have innate similarity), if you enjoyed Tiramisu and mecha, you should check it out.

mobile suit gundam anime

Mobile Suit Gundam

After mankind moved to space, it established several colony clusters. However, one of these colonies declares independence as well as war on the Earth Federation. Using powerful mobile suits, these rebels quickly gain the upper hand. However, in the midst of the conflict, a young civilian named Amuro Ray finds himself hurled into the conflict.

There are a lot of Gundam themes to found within Tiramisu. Generally the plot of Tiramisu is the basic plot of every Gundam series ever. However, while the above is the original Gundam, perhaps you would be better off watching some of the newer series if you want better animation, but maybe not as intricate of a plot.

For Fans of Comedy Mecha

Martian Successor Nadesico anime

Martian Successor Nadesico

Despite growing up on a healthy diet of mecha anime and living on Mars, Akito doesn’t want to fight. He wants to cook. However, when Jovian Lizards come to attack his colony, he finds himself mysteriously transported back to Earth. There he meets Yurika, the captain of the space battleship Nadesico. She takes him on as a cook and backup pilot. While the ship is filled with seemly misfits and weirdoes, they are all hand-picked, highly qualified experts, Akito included.

If you like Tiramisu because of the comedy and wanted a comedy mecha series to follow it up. There aren’t a bunch of choices, but this one is your best bets. Like Tiramisu, there is occasional plot, but even when doing it, things are kept light. Of course, the humor isn’t quite as blatantly raunchy as Tiramisu, but it is still pretty effective.

Full Metal Panic anime

Full Metal Panic

Specialized troops armed with state-of-the-art weapons, Mithril is an organization tasked with stopping terrorism and keeping the peace on earth. However, their success hinges on the Whispered, individuals that possess remarkable knowledge of machinery and devices. Enter Sousuke Sagara who is tasked with protecting Whispered candidate Kaname Chidori. In order to do so, he joins her in high school, but while he has a talent on the battlefield, it seems that doesn’t transfer as well to the classroom. However, the enemies of Mithril are just beginning to make their move.

While both share the similarity of being mecha, Tiramisu is more space-oriented while Full Metal Panic is split between mecha action and slice of life. However, while Full Metal Panic has a somewhat serious plot, it knows how to have good fun like what Tiramisu is all about.

irresponsible captain tylor anime

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Ueki Tylor had his life planned out – join the military and land a safe, cushy desk job. However, after wandering into a hostage situation and saving an admiral, suddenly he finds himself the captain of a space cruiser. Of course, his crew is the most rag-tag team of misfits in the universe, too.

Although Tiramisu starts out with the rest of the crew seeming somewhat serious about their lives and the main character only being the strange one, as the series goes on, you learn the whole universe is a bunch of weirdoes. It is somewhat the same in Tylor, although the comedy is more subtle and the misfits are typically limited to his crew.

For Fans of Short-Episode Comedy

space patrol luluco anime

Space Patrol Luluco

Living in the rather abnormal Ogikubo, the only Space Immigration Zone on Earth and a melting pot of aliens and humans, bubbly Luluco just wants to be normal. However, when her father accidentally eats a powerful sleep capsule that freezes him solid and she also accidentally breaks him, she rushes over the Space Patrol to take his place in the office. There, the chief Over Justice hires her as an undercover agent to sniff out crime at her school.

Luluco covers a different section of the mecha genre, but it isn’t so much a parody like Tiramisu. Instead it is often just abstract sci-fi craziness. However, while Tiramisu has a “kind of” plot, it has its abstract crazy moments as well.

senyuu anime

Senyuu

It has been a thousand years since the demon lord was sealed away by the legendary hero Creasion. However, when the demons return, it is decided that the demon lord would soon return as well. Now it is up to the great hero’s descendants – all 75 of them – to seal him away again. Unfortunately, most of their skills are not what you would call top-notch.

What Tiramisu is to the mecha genre, Senyuu is to the fantasy genre. Tiramisu parodies all the drama and politics within the mecha genre by cranking up the dial and Senyuu does the same. Both series are also delivered in 7-minute episodes, so even at their worst humor, you only wasted a few minutes of time.
