Born into a new world, Will awakens as a baby that has been taken in by three undead guardians of a long-dead city.
As he is raised, he is taught magic and swordsmanship, but also learns of the world that surrounds him. A world that was once ravaged by a powerful warrior that the three undead guardians only just managed to seal away.
As they are bound to that city, they can’t say for sure what became of the world or humanity after their death and undeath, but they prepare young Will for when he will eventually have to venture out into the world.

Both Jobless Reincarnation and The Faraway Paladin do a good job at breathing new life into tired fantasy worlds. They both put effort into the magic and the settings, but Jobless Reincarnation does the better job at creating diverse and interesting characters.
Jobless Reincarnation does, however, have an issue containing its pervert moments. For some, that can detract from the enjoyment.
The World’s Finest Assassin is Reincarnated Into a Different World as an Aristocrat
The greatest assassin on Earth lived only to be a tool by those that wished to wield his mastery. That is, until they decided that he was no longer needed and ended his life.
By the grace of a goddess, this masterful man was reincarnated into a new world where he is asked to kill a hero that will later bring about the end of that world.
Deciding to finally live for himself, this man, now named Lugh Tuatha De, puts his skills as a killer to the test with foes who wield real magic.
While The World’s Finest Assassin is more guns and magic than the swords and sorcery of The Faraway Paladin, it is an isekai series that follows a man reborn into a fantasy world and trained to be great warrior from birth. They both also put an emphasis on the main character’s wanting to live better than they previously had.
Wise Man’s Grandchild
After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin.
However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew into an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.
Both The Faraway Paladin and Wise Man’s Grandchild feature men reincarnated into a new world as a baby. They are then raised by sages and taught magic.
Both series feature main characters raised in seclusion, but The Faraway Paladin has Will manifest okay social skills. The big joke in Wise Man’s Grandchild is that Shin has no common sense and poor social skills. However, while that’s the joke, Wise Man’s Grandchild still enjoys big action scenes, though its plot is much different from the journeying in The Faraway Paladin.
For Fans of Strong Fantasy World Building
Re-Zero
When Subaru Natsuki goes out for a midnight snack run, he suddenly finds himself transported to another world. As a bewildered teen in a land of swords and magic, he wanders around and ends up attacked by thugs.
After being saved by a mysterious woman, he agrees to help her get back something that was stolen. Unfortunately, it ends in both their deaths. With his dying breath, he finds that he possesses the power of revival, escaping his death by the repeating the last few hours.
Both Re:Zero and The Faraway Paladin are tied together by being isekai anime. However, they are more than just that. They are isekai anime that clearly put a lot of effort into creating the world they take place in.
It really is the details in The Faraway Paladin and Re:Zero that make them both so special and feel so much more fleshed out than other isekai anime. The Faraway Paladin made an intricate god system whereas Re:Zero does something wholly unique by showcasing the main characters’ ongoing mental trauma from frequently dying.
WorldEnd – What Do You Do At The End Of The World?
It has been five hundred years since humanity went extinct at the hands of the mysterious beasts that roam the land. Now the surviving races have retreated to floating islands in the sky out of reach of most of the beasts. However, there are ones nimble enough to put these people in danger.
A small group of young girls, a race called the Leprechauns, are now raised as the only ones that can wield ancient weapons to fend off invasion by the beasts, but it often requires them to sacrifice themselves and they don’t often live to see adulthood.
Enter Willem, the last surviving human woken from his slumber and sent to watch over these girls, still feeling the sting from the final battle where he lost everything five hundred years ago.
Both The Faraway Paladin and WorldEnd feature fantasy worlds where humanity is diminished, declined, or done away with almost completely. It belongs more to the fantasy creatures now and can tell a more interesting story because of it.
However, WorldEnd is a more tragic tale. It may be a world of fantasy creatures, but they too are constantly threatened. The Faraway Paladin features danger, but it isn’t really the same society-ending sort of danger.
Record of Grancrest War
After a tragedy that occurred at a wedding between the two nations of Fantasia Union and Factory Alliance, the continent of Atlatan is embroiled in war once again.
In this war, an Alliance mage is rescued by a young warrior named Theo that carries a mysterious crest. His strange crest is able to banish the corrupting chaos which is consuming the countryside, and she finds herself pulled into his epic quest.
The Faraway Paladin and Record of Grancrest War are distinctly different in plot, aside from being fantasy anime. However, what they both do really well is create fantasy worlds that are unique in the small things, enough to make you invested in them even if the characters themselves are somewhat stereotypical.
They both try new magical concepts and create new world politics, then send the main characters on a world-traveling adventure to show them off.
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Thrown into a foreign land with no memory of their previous life, a group of strangers must try and survive in a brutal world filled with dangerous monsters.
While the strong quickly band together, the weak are left to make a patchwork group of their own. Slowly but surely this group becomes fighters, finally earning enough to survive each day.
Both The Faraway Paladin and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash are similar in that they are isekai, but don’t draw a lot of attention to it. In fact, it is only briefly mentioned in both.
Instead, they focus on creating a more grounded fantasy world in which the characters really do need to train themselves first if they even want to live to be big damn heroes later. Grimgar focuses more on the struggle of attaining strength, however.
Rokka – Braves of the Six Flowers
According to legend, the revival of the Demon God will cause the Goddess to appoint six heroes, called Braves, to prevent the world from becoming a living hell. Adlet Mayer, the self-proclaimed strongest man in the world, travels to Piena in hopes of becoming a Brave.
After being briefly jailed for causing trouble, he is indeed called and he sets off on a journey with the princess, another Brave, to defeat the Demon God. However, when all six Braves assemble, there are seven in total and the others soon suspect Adlet is a fraud.
While The Faraway Paladin is technically an isekai it, like the non-isekai Rokka, it sets up a vast-feeling fantasy world and explores it through its diverse group of characters.
While The Faraway Paladin is presented more like a journey, Rokka is initially based on a mystery. Through solving this mystery, it builds out the world and explores the unique society presented within.
Essentially, if you just enjoy deep fantasy worlds that have plenty of action, but are still grounded in fleshing out their not so boilerplate settings, then Rokka is an excellent watch after The Faraway Paladin.
To Your Eternity
One day, an entity, for reasons unknown, threw an orb to Earth. With no emotion or identity, the orb is meant to gather sensations and is able to take the shape of things it encounters as it learns.
For many years, it was a rock, and then it became moss, and when a wolf took its last breath near it, it became the wolf. After wandering for some time, it met a boy. After a long struggle, the boy, too, took his last breath.
With human form, now the orb sets off on his never-ending journey where he will meet many new people and have many new experiences.
In essence, both The Faraway Paladin and To Your Eternity explore that there can be no happiness in life without a fair dose of bitterness. You will grow close to people, and they may die. You will meet other people, but you will have to leave them.
Both series follow young men on a rather aimless journey to learn about their world. As they travel, they get intertwined in the stories of others, and those stories may not always end up happily.
For Fans of Gods and Men
Rage of Bahamut – Genesis
Thousands of years ago, ancient dragon Bahamut terrorized the world. However, when gods and demons allied themselves to prevent the world’s destruction, they sealed him away, splitting the key among them so he would be eternally imprisoned.
After the dragon was sealed, humanity returned to normal. However, things are about to get very abnormal for bounty hunter Favaro when he meets a mysterious women that holds half the key to Bahamut’s seal.
If you enjoyed a well-crafted fantasy world where gods, humans, and all sort of creatures interact often, then Rage of Bahamut can provide a similarly unique adventure. However, it has the added benefit of having characters that are more vibrant and diverse in personality and even more stunning action scenes.
Like The Faraway Paladin, Rage of Bahamut is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly stale-feeling fantasy genre. Both create fun characters and big action in a world that feels different from most other fantasy worlds in anime.
Tales of Zestiria The X
Sorey is a human that was raised among the seraphim, spiritual beings that are not visible to normal humans.
However, one day when a human princess-knight wanders into their territory, he finds himself drawn to the human capital.
This eventually leads him to become the new Shepherd, the one destined to defeat the Lord of Calamity and prevent the ruin of the world.
Although Zestiria is based off a game, and that doesn’t always translate to a good anime, Zestiria, the anime, actually really improves on the game’s story by adding in some necessary details.
That aside, both Tales of Zestiria the X and The Faraway Paladin take place in worlds were humans live alongside mostly unseen other entities. In Zestiria, they aren’t quite gods, but have powers that they can grant to others.
Furthermore, the main characters in both shows are good-aligned people with snarky white-haired best bros. You watch the duo and others travel the world to defeat foes.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
In the fantasy city of Orario, there is a massive labyrinth underneath it. For brave adventurers, glory and fortune can be found within. In order to tackle the challenging monsters inside, adventures join guilds of strong gods and goddesses.
However, for newbie adventurer Bell Cranel, no good guild will have him, except for Hestia, a goddess with no followers. Together they team up to grow strong and find glory.
Both The Faraway Paladin and Is It Wrong to Try to pick Up Girls in a Dungeon feature worlds in which you are expected to basically pledge yourself to a god in order to earn boons from them. Interestingly enough, both series also end up following a guy pledging himself to a goddess that has kind of fallen out of fashion with people.
However, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon is more a standard adventure show instead of doing a deity’s bidding. It is very much a dungeon crawler compared to The Faraway Paladin’s aimless journeying.
