For Fans of Friendship and Betrayal

Berserk Anime

Berserk

Gutts has been a mercenary for as long as he can remember, caring for nothing but moving to the next battle. One fateful battle puts him at odds with the rapidly rising mercenary group, the Band of the Hawk. Their charismatic, idealistic leader Griffith soon makes him join by force, but the bond he forms with the Band of the Hawk may very well mean the end of the world.

Most people called The Legend of the Legendary Heroes “Berserk-lite” because it has many of the same themes within it, but is less graphic compared to Berserk. It is worth noting that Berserk is more traditional medieval fantasy in the beginning before it becomes magical though.

code geass

Code Geass

The Holy Empire of Britannia has established itself as the dominant military nation, starting after their conquest of Japan, now named Area 11. Under Britannia’s tyranny, a number of resistance groups rose up to fight for their freedom. Enter Lelouch Lamperouge, the exiled prince of Britannia who has been sent to live in Japan. One day, after finding himself caught in the crossfire in a battle between Britannia and insurgents, Lelouch is able to escape with his life after meeting C.C., a mysterious girl who grants him the power of absolute obedience.

If you enjoyed the more political side of things when it came to Sion, then Code Geass is definitely a show to explore. Sure, it is also about a guy with eye powers, but more than that, it is a political chess game.

gungrave anime

Gungrave

Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowel grew up on the streets together and both turned to crime in order to get by. However, when their activities are noticed by the eyes of the expansive Millennion mafia syndicate, the pair find themselves brought under their wings and rising through the ranks. Things go well until one fateful day that changes it all. Years later, Brandon Heat is brought back from the dead to fight Millennion and its new leader, Harry MacDowel.

In much the same way, Gungrave focuses on two characters becoming close friends, one supporting the other’s great ambition, then being horribly betrayed. Gungrave just has a different Mafia-changing-to-sci-fi setting.

For Fans of Overpower Main Characters

chrome shelled regios anime

The world has ended and is overrun with Filth Monsters. Humanity lives in mobile cities called Regios and use Dite weapons to defend themselves. Layfon is a student hoping to forget a brutal past, but his abilities catch the attention of fellow students and they attempt to recruit him into their battle group.

While different in genre, Chrome-Shelled Regios features a main character who has a power they don’t want and actively tries to hide for much of the series. He then becomes embroiled in the world’s problems and puts that power to work.

record of grancrest war anime

Record of Grancrest War

His strange crest is able to banish the corrupting chaos which is consuming the countryside, and she finds herself pulled into his epic quest.

Both series ultimately look like pretty generic fantasy series, then surprise you by actually being pretty great. More than that, they put the time and effort into building an interesting world and fleshing out the lore behind the abilities.

aesthetica of a rogue hero anime

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

Decades ago, Samon Syndrome began to manifest in young teens, giving them the ability to travel to other worlds. Many of them remained in those other worlds, but some did eventually return with their fantasy powers still intact. Akatsuki Ousawa is one such individual who forwent a peaceful life after saving his fantasy world and returned to Earth. While he has his powers intact, he also brought back Miu, the daughter of the demon lord he defeated. Passing her off as his sister, the pair join Babel, a special school designed to contain, study, and train those who returned from other worlds.

While definitely completely different in plot, both series are ultimately tied together by their main character who is both powerful and laid-back. They both end up having to keep secrets about either their powers or their companions as well.

For Fans of Journeying to Collect Things

chaika the coffin pricness anime

Chaika – The Coffin Princess

Chaika Trabant is on a quest. Carrying a coffin on her back, with no memory of her past, and highly adept at casting spells, she is hunting down the scattered remains of the Emperor Gaz who once held the world in an iron grip. One day, she meets Toru Akari in the woods, a warrior who is having trouble finding a job to support himself. Together along with Toru’s sister, they start their journey.

Both series follow characters as they are on a journey to collect something. However, while that is the basis for the adventure, that is not always the focus of it. You begins to see that larger things are going on in the world that the characters get caught up in.

anime series like katanagatari

Katanagatari

In Edo era Japan, Shichika Yasuri practices one of the most unique sword styles among a culture of unique sword styles, a technique that uses his own body as a blade. As the seventh head of the style’s school, he lives in exile with his sister Nanami until the ambitious Togame barges into his life. Togame tries to recruit him on her mission to collect the twelve unique swords known as the Deviant Blades for the shogunate. Interested by the girl more so than her mission, Yasuri accepts, only to later find the challenge in collecting these swords is defeating the legendary swordsmen that wield them.

While the Legend of the Legendary Heroes has some political things going on, the main character’s journey is actually very similar to the main character’s journey in Katanagatari. Travel with a girl and collect things. Interestingly enough, they both get rather complex as they go on.

golden kamuy anime

Golden Kamuy

After surviving the brutal Russo-Japanese war, Sugimoto gained the nickname “the immortal”. However, he now seeks the promise of gold to the north in Hokkaido in order to provide for the blind wife and infant son of his comrade who died in the war. Yet, during his hunt, he hears the tale of a hidden stash of gold belonging to criminals with a map made out of human skin. Dismissing it as a tale at first, he soon finds that the man who told him the story has those very same map-like tattoos. Now on a race with a native Ainu girl whose father was murdered for the gold, they try to make it to the stash before the criminals.

This one is definitely of a distinctly different flavor, being more grounded in reality and all, but both anime series are very good adventure series with more going on around the characters than just their journey. They also both are highlighted by their wide range of interesting characters.
