When they are born, mages are each given a random and unchangeable crest that will effect their powers and potential. Gaius, a man widely known as the strongest sage, reached the limit of his potential, but decided to reincarnate far into the future to attain a different crest. He is reborn as Mathias Hildesheimer thousands of years later and gets the crest he hoped to receive. However, in this future, his crest has been slandered as the worst crest due to demons that have now infiltrated humanity and pull the strings in order to limit humanity’s magical potential.

Record of Grancrest War
After a tragedy that occurred at a wedding between the two nations of Fantasia Union and Factory Alliance, the continent of Atlatan is embroiled in war once again. In this war, an Alliance mage is rescued by a young warrior named Theo that carries a mysterious crest. His strange crest is able to banish the corrupting chaos which is consuming the countryside, and she finds herself pulled into his epic quest.
Both series are about powers that comes from a crest on the body. However, instead of having a crest with a bad reputation, the main character in Grancrest War has one that no one has really seen before. If I’m being perfectly honest, Record of Grancrest War has a little more depth to the plot and the world. It ends up a more enjoyable show.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight
A certain selection of people known as Blazers are able to manifest their souls as weapons. To harness these powers, a number of schools have been established to teach these people how to use them. Ikki Kurogane is an aspiring Mage-Knight, but unfortunately is also one of the lowest ranked Blazers around. However, there may be more to his powers than meets the eye.
Both series are school-focused series in which the main character has a power, but it is one that is decidedly low ranked. However, as you would expect, they end up pretty much being the most powerful badass in the show and are showered with ladies because of it.
A Certain Magical Index
Academy City in Japan is at least 30 years more advanced than the rest of the world, technologically. However, they also have a number of students that are honing their psychic abilities. Unfortunately for Touma Kamijou, he is a psychic rank of zero, but he has an ability that the city’s scientists can’t quite understand – the ability to negate other psychic abilities. Despite this, he lives a normal life until he meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and she drags him into the realm of the supernatural.
While A Certain Magical Index is more sci-fi than the fantasy of The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest, it also features people born with unique powers of varying usefulness. Instead of being confined to a school, the plot is more spread across the city. It is also really narrative heavy so it requires more than casual attention to keep track of what is going on.
Kaze no Stigma
Kazuma Yagami is a Fuujitsu user able to control the wind. However, this ability led to banishment from his family home for not being able to control fire. Years later when he returns home, it leads to conflict, but worse yet, several members of his family have been killed by Fuujitsu. Now he must discover the true identity of the killer.
The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest and Kaze no Stigma feature sons from prestigious families that have rather undesired powers. However, they completely dwarf everyone around them in terms of skill. The big difference is that Kaze no Stigma follows a more shounen style battle plot.
For Fans of Reincarnated in Another Time
The Misfit of Demon King Academy
After countless wars, Demon Lord Anos Voldigoad decided he would reincarnate into the future. However, 2,000 years later, he has found that his descendants have become too used to peace and their magical powers weakened because of it. Reincarnated with his full strength, the sheer magical power of Anos makes him a misfit at the Demon King Academy charged with educating the next generation in waning magical prowess.
Both series, most obviously, have incredibly similar plots. A insanely powerful man gets bored and reincarnates into the future of his world and finds that much of it has declined. He then uses his unique knowledge and power to sort things out again.
The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat
The greatest assassin on Earth lived only to be a tool by those that wished to wield his mastery. That is, until they decided that he was no longer needed and ended his life. By the grace of a goddess, this masterful man was reincarnated into a new world where he is asked to kill a hero that will later bring about the end of that world. Deciding to finally live for himself, this man, now named Lugh Tuatha De, puts his skills as a killer to the test with foes who wield real magic.
While The World’s Finest Assassin is more of a traditional isekai, it features a similar sort of twist to it. In both shows, the main characters are reincarnated, but they have the knowledge of their previous life where they were incredibly skilled. They often lean on this knowledge to give them an advantage in life.
The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?
One day, 25-year-old Shingo Ichinomiya goes to sleep and wakes up a 6-year-old in a medieval noble family. Unfortunately, he soon comes to learn that his noble family is not only quite poor, but he is actually the 8th son and looking at virtually no inheritance. He is, however, talented at magic and decides to work to bring prosperity to his family.
Both series are about reincarnation, but they also allow the main character to keep knowledge from their previous life. This allows the the main character in The 8th Son to seek the proper path to ensure he is not left destitute and allows his family to thrive.
Redo of Healer
As a boy, Keyaru awakened the power of a Hero. His specialty was healing. However, by using these powers, he experienced the trauma of the injured person as well. It eventually drove him insane, but he was forced to use his powers anyway. After enduring torture and abuse by his fellow heroes for years, Keyaru formed a plan to get his revenge. He was able to turn back time and restart his life with all his previous memories. Thus his vengeance began.
If its large reputation has not preceded it, Redo of Healer has very graphic sexual assault and torture in it. I feel like I need to preface it with that so you don’t go into it expecting the same sort of tame experience as The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest. That being said, it is a series about a guy who essentially turns back time so he can use his knowledge from the past in order to build a better future for himself. He’s just a bit of a monster, though.
For Fans of Magic High School
Spirit Chronicles
When he was a child, Amakawa Haruto made a promise to his childhood friend to reunite. However, he could never fulfill that promise both because she had disappeared and because he was killed in a bus accident. Now, his memories awaken in a young orphan named Rio who seeks revenge for his mother that was brutally murdered in front of him. Confused about these memories of Haruto’s life, Rio ends up saving the kidnapped young princess and awakening a special power in the process. As reward for his heroism, he is granted a scholarship to the Royal Academy.
Alongside having a unique reincarnation element to it, both Spirit Chronicles and The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest are school-based shows in which the main character is pretty serious and attracts himself a healthy harem with his immense skill.
The Irregular at Magic High School
After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over. At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.
Both shows are ultimately about students at a magical-based school that is sorted by skill. The main character is considered not very skilled, but that is because others do not understand their unique power. As such, you watch them be badass for the rest of the series. The Irregular at Magic High School is a little more refined and mature in tone, though.
Wise Man’s Grandchild
After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin. However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew into an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.
Both series follow incredibly powerful mages as they take their first steps out into the world through their magic high school. Of course the main character is very powerful, but the Wise Man’s Granchild has the added twist of him being kind of socially stunted. Regardless, both shows have a pretty wholesome feel to them.
