The greatest assassin on Earth lived only to be a tool by those that wished to wield his mastery. That is, until they decided that he was no longer needed and ended his life. By the grace of a goddess, this masterful man was reincarnated into a new world where he is asked to kill a hero that will later bring about the end of that world. Deciding to finally live for himself, this man, now named Lugh Tuatha De, puts his skills as a killer to the test with foes who wield real magic.
While it has itself a spin about assassins, this is still very much another isekai. However, an isekai done with diligence like this is still a nice watch. Anime Like The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat
For Fans of Born Into Another World
Jobless Reincarnation
After being chased out of his NEET nest, a man instinctively saves some teens from an oncoming car and is killed. He is reborn as Rudeus Greyrat, a baby and new firstborn son of a local knight. Finding he has great potential for magic, Rudy vows to make the most of his new life even if he is still a perverted otaku on the inside.
Both series have a very similar plot progression at first, following the main character from baby to small child where he then learns magic from a girl that looks like a child. Both shows are isekai series that draw you in, but Jobless Reincarnation has a lot more ecchi moments that kind of detracts from the actual story.
Wise Man’s Grandchild
After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin. However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew into an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.
Both series are isekai series where you follow men reborn into a world and actually growing up there. However, Lugh retains his memories while Shin only has vague inklings of a previous life. Regardless, they are both incredibly powerful individuals, but Shin comes with a unique quirk that doesn’t end up impeding him much.
By The Grace of the Gods
After leading a miserable life, Ryouma Takebayashi passes away at age 39. Three deities, taking pity on him, reincarnate him into a fantasy world with an aptitude for magic, telling him to enjoy life and that they will always watch out for him. With his newfound existence, he spends it studying slimes, amassing a slime army, and learning some magic, but he misses humanity. Being persuaded to join a group of travelers, Ryouma’s new world opens up for him.
Both of these isekai series follow grown men reborn as children in a fantasy world due to the interference of a deity. They also have a similarity of being about men that people would actually form a harem around rather than the standard isekai loser.
The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?
One day, 25-year-old Shingo Ichinomiya goes to sleep and wakes up a 6-year-old in a medieval noble family. Unfortunately, he soon comes to learn that his noble family is not only quite poor, but he is actually the 8th son and looking at virtually no inheritance. He is, however, talented at magic and decides to work to bring prosperity to his family.
These two isekai series are similar because they are both about grown men reincarnated into a aristocratic family. However, The 8th Son spends minimal time on him as a kid, and the twist to it is that his noble family is pretty poor. Still, like Lugh, Shingo ends up being a fantastic mage.
For Fans of Assassins
Akame ga Kill
Tatsumi is a naive boy from a rural village that makes the trip to the city in order to join the military and help his hometown. However, after he is rejected, he ends up joining Night Raid, a group of assassins part of a revolutionary movement to overthrow the government. From there, he must fight a brutal and increasingly bloody shadow war.
While it is not an isekai series, Akame ga Kill does put the focus on assassins in a medieval fantasy world. The group of assassins are more super powered than trained in specific skill, but both series do have some interesting fights and are carried by characters.
Black Cat
Completing every job with accuracy, Train is an infamous assassin under the moniker Black Cat. However, one night he stumbles upon Saya, a bounty hunter with a positive outlook on life. Her positivity begins to affect him and he begins to rethink his life, choosing to become an honest bounty hunter instead of an assassin.
While not an isekai series, Black Cat is a shounen style series about assassins. Both series feature very unique looking characters in shows that balance assassination and cuter slice of life moments well. However, Black Cat doesn’t quite reach the same kind of depth of character that The World’s Finest Assassin does.
Darker Than Black
After the appearance of the Heaven and Hell Gates, then rose the Contractors, individuals that gave up their humanity for supernatural powers. In Section 4 of Japan around the Hell Gate, Chief Misaki finds herself constantly at odds with a Contractor named Hei, a man who takes missions from the ruthless underground Syndicate that slowly peel away the layers covering a threat to all Contractors.
If what you really crave is an anime more like Lugh’s previous life as an assassin, Darker Than Black is as close as you can get. It is dark, gritty, and brutal. You follow an anti-hero with a similar personality to Lugh as he carries out assassination jobs and finds himself entangled in an intrigue.
For Fans of Anti-Hero Main Characters
Redo of Healer
As a boy, Keyaru awakened the power of a Hero. His specialty was healing. However, by using these powers, he experienced the trauma of the injured person as well. It eventually drove him insane, but he was forced to use his powers anyway. After enduring torture and abuse by his fellow heroes for years, Keyaru formed a plan to get his revenge. He was able to turn back time and restart his life with all his previous memories. Thus his vengeance began.
Both series, the light novels, were written by the same author, which was surprising because The World’s Finest Assassin doesn’t immediately read like basic teenage edgelord fantasy fiction. Regardless, both series feature an anti-hero as the main character who finds himself surrounded by cheerful and helpful women. The way they get there is bit different though since Redo of Healer is quite brutal and rape-y.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
The stories tell of four heroes summoned from another world – the sword, spear, bow, and shield heroes who will prevent calamity. With darkness bearing down on them, the Kingdom of Melromarc summons these heroes from modern day Japan. For otaku Naofumi Iwatani, unfortunately he is labeled the shield hero, the weakest of the group. Worse yet, betrayal sees him labeled as a criminal and outcasted. With hatred and vengeance consuming him, he sets forth to grow strong.
While You don’t get to see much of the process that made Lugh a cold assassin in The World’s Finest Assassin, The Rising of the Shield Hero lets you see the whole transformation. He is made cold by betrayal, but like Lugh, you see some of the warmth on the inside sometimes too. Unlike The World’s Finest Assassin that is about assassinating garbage people, The Rising of the Shield Hero better shows you how awful people can be, though.
Spirit Chronicles
When he was a child, Amakawa Haruto made a promise to his childhood friend to reunite. However, he could never fulfill that promise both because she had disappeared and because he was killed in a bus accident. Now, his memories awaken in a young orphan named Rio who seeks revenge for his mother that was brutally murdered in front of him. Confused about these memories of Haruto’s life, Rio ends up saving the kidnapped young princess and awakening a special power in the process. As reward for his heroism, he is granted a scholarship to the Royal Academy.
While Spirit Chronicles has its obvious differences in the whole sub-plot of having two people sharing a body, it features a young boy that has been shaped into an anti-hero by the world, not unlike how Lugh was shaped that way from his previous life. Both series feature these men surrounded by cute girls while being just amazing in every respect as well.
