After being ridiculed for his strange name, Nasa, like the space agency, decides he will become a man even greater than the starry sky. However, one night, that all changes when he sees a beautiful girl. She ends up saving him from being fatally hit by a truck while crossing the street to talk to her. Having chased her down despite his serious injuries, he asks her out. She says she will go out with him if they marry. He agrees, and passes out. Waking up to find her gone, he abandons his ambitions until one day when she shows up with their marriage registration.

Although he is an otaku and she is a casual-smoking, social-drinking office lady, Hajime and Kaoru fell in love and got married. Now they must learn how to cohabitate together despite a few odd habits on both ends.
Both series are romance series that don’t have a lot of ambition. They know what you want. They give you those cute moments and the comedy of young people in love. The difference is that I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying has shorter, more rapidly paced episodes and tosses a bunch of otaku comedy in.
Engaged to the Unidentified
On Kobeni Yonomori’s 16th birthday, it is discovered that her grandfather arranged for her to marry the mysterious Hakuya Mitsumine. Shocked, she now finds herself living with her future husband, his deceptive little sister, and her own perverted older sister. However, Kobeni takes it in stride, adjusting to her new life and trying to learn more about the new additions.
While in Engaged to the Identified the main couple isn’t actually married, they are very suddenly thrown into the same home. However, while Tonikawa focuses on romance and cute moments, Engaged to the Unidentified has more of a focus on comedy, but is still very cute.
My Bride is a Mermaid
Michishio Nagasumi is living a normal life when he almost drowns on summer vacation. He is rescued by, of all things, a beautiful mermaid. Unfortunately, she is from a yakuza family that states if a human sees a mermaid, either the human or the mermaid must die. To save her life, Michishio agrees to marry the mermaid and become part of this crazy family.
Both series focus on the romance of a normal guy who is suddenly married/engaged to a strange girl he just met. The girl also may be a supernatural person, but it is not even veiled at all in My Bride is a Mermaid. What they most have in common is that they are both pretty laden with comedy.

Hayate the Combat Butler
After being abandoned by his parents and working up a huge debt, Hayate Ayasaki decides to try to kidnap a girl for ransom money. However, after feeling sorry for her and actually saving her from real kidnappers, he finds out that she is extremely rich and wants him to be her personal butler.
While yes, Hayate the Combat Butler is also about a guy whose whole world is changed by the appearance of a girl, I picked this series of all other series because Hayate and Tonikawa share the same author and art style. Really, if you are a fan, Tonikawa is much like Hayate done better so it shares many of the same tropes.
Love, Chunibyou, and Other Delusions
Everyone has that stage in their life where they think themselves special, different from mere humans. This phenomenon is called Chunibyou Syndrome and most common in pre-pubescent children. In middle school, Yuuta Togashi thought himself the Dark Flame Master. He has since grown out of it upon entering high school and looks back at those cringe-worthy times with displeasure. Unfortunately, after a chance meeting with Rikka Takanashi, a girl believing to have a God in her eye, she attaches herself to him and brings that Chunibyou past back out.
Both Chunibyou and Tonikawa are about a guy that has his whole world turned upside down when he meets a girl one night. From there on, that is the plot. She does things, he reacts to those things. Chunibyou has a more fleshed out plot, but both are romantic comedies and have plenty of those squee moments.
Mysterious Girlfriend X
Every girl is mysterious to a young man, but new transfer student Mikoto Urabe is particularly curious to Akira Tsubaki. She earns a reputation as a weirdo on her first day when she laughs in the middle of class for no reason, doesn’t interact with her classmates, and sleeps on her desk. One day, Akira finds her napping at her desk, notices some drool that she left and impulsively tastes it. He is suddenly struck with a fever and finds out he is suffering from a love sickness that is a form of withdrawal from not ingesting more of her drool. As such, the two enter a very strange new relationship.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is, admittedly, different from Tonikawa in a lot of ways. It is a little darker, a little weirder, but strangely has a similar plot. A guy meets a girl through happenstance, and they end up together without barely knowing each other. This series is more of a drama sort of romance, however.

My Love Story
With his tall stature, bulky muscles, and mean face, Takeo Gouda is not exactly a hit with the ladies. Men and women alike find him terrifying, but he still tries to do the right thing. One day he saves a cute girl from a molester on the train. When she reaches out to him again, he thinks she likes his handsome friend, but he is shocked to discover she actually likes him!
If you enjoyed Tonikawa because there wasn’t a lot of the typical drama. It was just two people that liked each other, doing couple stuff. My Love Story is the same way. Certainly there could be drama, but the series just doesn’t focus on it. It is just two people in a new relationship trying to feel each other out.
Tsurezure Children
Tsurezure Children depicts the many different scenarios of young love. From the relationship between the student council president and a rebel girl to a boy so crippled by his own lack of self-confidence that he can’t accept that a girl confessed to him. You follow their triumphs and failures throughout the relationships of half a dozen young couples.
While Tonikawa focuses on one couple, Tsurezure Children focus on a handful of different ones. This leads to more individual plots, and more opportunity for those fluffy romantic moments. Both series are low drama that focus on the nice side of being in love.
Tsuki Ga Kirei
For the first time in their third year, Azumi and Mizuno were put in the same class. Initially, they are nothing more than classmates, but continued exposure sees them grow progressively closer. As the year goes on, the pair and their classmates must come to face themselves as they mature and face challenges.
While both Tonikawa and Tsuki ga Kirei can be called low drama, both do have drama, but it is used to suit the plot. It isn’t unnecessary as drama can be in many romance series. For the most part, they are pretty genuine series about one couple learning to fall in love with each other. Tsuki ga Kirei is considered a more serious romance, though.
