Parallel to our world is Magano where the Kegare dwell. Exorcists are sent in to deal with these monsters and cleanse impurities. One day, a talented young exorcist named Benio is returning to Tokyo in order to meet with the Exorcists Union. On the road, she meets a young exorcist named Rokuro. After seeing some kids being plagued by Kegare, Benio rushes in and drags Rokuro with her. There she discovers he has skill to rival her own, but refuses to fight. Being paired up by the head exorcist, they are lauded as the Twin Star Exorcists and prophesied as the future parents of the reincarnation of the Abe no Seimei, who will cleanse the world of Kegare.
Twin Star Exorcists takes that standard shounen formula and stays the course with it. Even so, it does all those standard tropes so well that it becomes an enjoyable thing for people that don’t need innovation in the plots and themes they enjoy. Tokyo Ravens
Spiritual magic once helped Japan launch themselves into World War II, but the war was lost after an onmyouji caused the Great Spiritual Disaster that still plagues Tokyo to this day. As a result, the Onmyou Agency was established to combat the demons. These days, spiritual powers have declined, and this is the case with Harutora, a young man tasked with protecting the reincarnation of the Great Disaster’s creator. However, when an an onmyouji attempts to recreate the Great Spiritual Disaster, he rises to the occasion to try and stop them.
Obviously both are about exorcists, but even more so, they are both about male and female pairs of exorcists who are ruled over by some sort of fate in their past or present.
Blue Exorcist
Humans and demons have always been separated by two different worlds, humans in Assiah and demons in Gehenna. The only way to travel between the worlds is by possession, which is how Satan, the ruler of Gehenna, wages his war. Blue Exorcist follows Rin Okumura, a somewhat trouble teen and son of Satan. However, while his father wants him to help conquer the human world, Rin decides to become an exorcist to fight him instead.
Blue Exorcist and Twin Star Exorcists are particularly stylish anime series about, as you can guess, exorcising demons that plague the world. Both are rather shounen style battlers as well, but Blue Exorcist lacks the male and female partnership dynamic of Twin Star Exorcists.
D Gray Man
After three years training with one of their prestigious Generals that saved him as a kid, Allen Walker is finally ready to join the Black Order, an organization of exorcists that fight Akuma and their leader, the Millennium Earl. With their Innocence weapons, Allen and his fellow exorcist embark on a journey to stop the Earl’s plot of ultimate destruction.
While also about exorcists, the exorcists in D. Gray Man are a touch different from the others on this list or in Twin Star Exorcist. However, they fight akuma using weapons similar to Twin Star Exorcists, but not requiring items to use. D Gray Man is a bit more gothic in style sometimes, but still a shounen style fighting anime.
For Fans of Dynamic Duos
Kekkaishi
Yoshimori Sumimura comes from a line of Kekkaishi, those with supernatural abilities who hunt Ayakashi. These Ayakashi come to feed on the power coming from Karasumori, an area where Yoshimori’s high school sits. Of course, Yoshimori isn’t alone in this fight either, he works with his childhood friend and neighbor Tokine Yukimura to beat by the Ayakashi in waves, but behind the scenes, a shadowy organization is beginning to make its move.
An exorcist by any other name is still an exorcist. Furthermore, it also follows a boy and girl partnership as well. However, the animation is a bit older.
Absolute Duo
Individuals who can materialize weapons from their soul are called “Blazers,” and they attend Kouryou Academy High School in order to harness their abilities. However, each student needs a partner. Tooru Kokonoe hopes to attain this power after the death of his sister, but at the opening ceremony, he is forced to duel against the person sitting next to him, with the loser being expelled. As Tooru prepares to give the match his all, it is not a weapon that manifests from his soul, but a shield, an irregularity which catches the attention of a foreign student named Julie Sigtuna.
While not about exorcists, Absolute Duo is about fighting and doing so with a strong partner. Both series get partners kind of landed in their lap and have to make do.
Shakugan no Shana
One day, Yuuji Sakai had his regular school life end when he becomes trapped in time and attacked by an unknown being. Right as he is about to die, he is rescued by a nameless hunter with brilliant red hair. After being saved, the girl tells him that he is a Torch, a soul that has already died and is just waiting to fizzle out.
After crossing paths one day, both series are about people who find themselves stuck together in countless upcoming battles. Both series also feature main male characters that doesn’t show their true strengths right away, though in Shakugan no Shana it isn’t because he doesn’t want to fight like in Twin Star Exorcists.
For Fans of Supernatural Battlers
Beyond the Boundary
As the last surviving member of her clan of spirit warriors, Mirai Kuriyama must use her special power of fighting using her blood in order to subdue Youmu, creatures that are the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day at school she happens across Akihito, a rare half-breed Youmu in human form. Immediately trying to kill him, she finds out he is an immortal being and the two strike up an impromptu friendship.
In essence, both series are about fighting demons using special abilities, but Beyond the Boundary is less shounen style and more drama style in the presentation of the battles. Both series are also visually beautiful, but in different ways.
Demon Slayer
After the death of his father, Tanjirou has taken up the role of the man of the home, supporting his mother and five siblings. However, after selling charcoal in town, he returns to tragedy. All his family was brutally slaughtered, save for one of his sisters. Unfortunately, she has been attacked by a demon and mingled their blood, turning her into a demon as well. However, she still shows signs of humanity, thrusting Tanjirou onto a quest to find a way to change his sister back and preserve what is left of his family.
Both Demon Slayer and Twin Star Exorcists are about fighting demons to keep humanity safe. They are also both about fighting that next big enemy as the story progresses. However, what they have most in common is that they both have a very distinct and alluring visual style.
Soul Eater
Death City is home to a famous technical academy and ran by Lord Death himself. At this academy, meisters train with their human weapons in order to evolve them into Death Scythes to be wielded by the Grim Reaper, Lord Death. Only by consuming 99 evils souls and the soul of one witch will a weapon be able to evolve. This is the story of several students of the academy as they try to grow stronger and protect Death City in the process.
While similar in the basic premise of pairs going out to fight supernatural things, Soul Eater and Twin Star Exorcists differ in many ways, but they both have a distinct style with its visuals and its many characters.
