For Fans of New World Discovery

space dandy anime

Space Dandy

The universe is a vast and strange place, full of even stranger beings. For a man named Dandy, his job is to travel around and register new species for a reward. What should be an easy job is made less so by a series of odd coincidences that happen along the way.

Both series feature the same sort of schtick. A guy goes to a place and ends up getting involved in problems. Space Dandy is about discovering and registering alien life while Magmell is about rescuing and fighting monster. The difference aside from the obvious ones is that Space Dandy is definitely more of a comedy.

made in abyss anime

Made in Abyss

The Abyss is an enormous cave system and the only unexplored place in the world. No one knows how deep it goes, but generations of bold adventurers have descended into it. In the town at the edge of The Abyss, an orphan named Rico dreams of raiding, as her mother did before her. One day while exploring the murky depths, she meets a boy, who turns out to be a robot, kicking off the start of her epic adventure.

Neither Magmell or Made in Abyss seem like it at first, but they take what looks like could be an immature tale and add touches of darkness to it everywhere. It really helps accent how dangerous the world around them truly is.

from the new world anime

From the New World

After a small portion of humanity suddenly developed psychokinetic powers, the world underwent a rapid transformation. After 1,000 years of turbulent history where regular humans struggled against those with powers, we focus in on Kamisu 66, a small town where 12-year-old Saki Watanabe finally awakened her powers. This awakening means she is finally able to join her friends at the Sage Academy. However, things in Saki’s life do not remain as simple as those precious days. With missing children in the village, rebellious rumblings, and a world steeped in myth and mystery, Saki and her friends are about to face the shocking truths of their peaceful society.

Both series are, essentially, about introducing the audience to a new land through the characters. Magmell wants to show you it through episodic monster hunting adventures while From the New World introduces it to you slowly. From the New World is slow to show them, but there are also monsters in it and action as well. It just focuses more on the dark mystery initially.

For Fans of Episodic Adventures

kino's journey anime

Kino’s Journey

Accompanied by her talking motorcycle, Hermes, Kino travels through her mysterious world, spending only three days and two nights in each town. The idea is that three days is enough to learn almost everything about a place. This is the story of her journey.

If you enjoyed the individual stories in every episode of Ultramarine Magmell and not so much the battles, then Kino’s Journey is for you. This story is just her traveling around and being engaged in a variety of different people’s problems. It is, however, lower on action.

mushishi anime

Mushishi

In this world, there exist Mushi, spirits that often exist with no purpose. However, these Mushi can affect the physical world in countless forms from diseases to more pleasant phenomenon. Why do these Mushi exist? That is the question that Ginko the Mushi-shi, a researcher on the phenomenon, asks himself as he travels the land investigating Mushi-related incidents.

Both shows don’t have a very strong overall plot. Instead, they focus every episode on a new mushi problem or a new danger on the continent. However, while Magmell is more battle-oriented, Mushishi is atmospheric and more about the individual tales.

astra lost in space anime

Astra Lost in Space

Each year, the students of Caird High School are placed in groups for Planet Camp. When group B5 land at their camp site, they are engulfed by a mysterious sphere of light that transports them into the middle of space, 5,000 light years away from home. After discovering an old space ship, they begin their very long journey home.

In both shows, every episode brings a new locale that the characters visit. Astra is just different planets. However, what they most have in common is the way that every episode, despite having a different story to tell, also drops little tidbits about the characters that leads to something more akin to an overall plot eventually.

For Fans of Super Strong Freelancers

muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation anime

Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation

In a world where spirits posses people against their will, Muhyo and Roji are dedicated to getting you justice and getting those spirits out of your body.

While Muhyo is more of a detective series, like Magmell, it follows a short guy with incredible powers doing work on a case by case basis. It just deals more with a variety of spirits unlike the monsters in Magmell.

scryed anime

Scryed

A strange environmental phenomenon 22 years ago in the Kanazawa prefecture caused the land to split and protrude upwards reaching unprecedented heights, creating the secluded area known as The Lost Ground. Kazuma is a young mercenary who lives in the Lost Ground, looking for any work he can find to sustain his livelihood within the harsh environment. He is one of the few people that are gifted with the Alter ability, which allows him to plaster his right arm and torso with a metallic alloy.

Magmell focuses on a more variety of monsters while Scryed focuses on more of a variety of powers as it is your more standard battle anime. However, if you are looking for a main character that is cocky and powerful to back it up, Kazuma fits the bill.

cagaster of insect cage anime

Cagaster of an Insect Cage

When a disease known as “Cagaster” started to manifest, those infected turned into insects. 30 years of this disease running rampant has lead to people like Kidou, who now battle the growing onslaught of insects.

Both series follow wildly overpowered main characters that work as sort of freelance monster fighters in a way. Furthermore, they are also accompanied by cute girls that they sort of rescued and just sort of stuck with them. However, the monsters in Cagaster are less varied.
