anime series like Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

In the not so distant future, mankind has advanced to a state where the transplant of the complete body from flesh to machine is possible. This has blurred the lines between physical and technological worlds. Unfortunately, criminals can also make use of this technology, which led to the rise of Sector 9, a government agency that operates independently and deals with this new kind of cybercrime. Section 9, led by Daisuke Aramaki and Motoko Kusanagi, deals with these crimes typically with success, until they find themselves faced with the rise of a new hacker who goes by the nickname The Laughing Man.

While Ghost in the Shell is more augmentation that AI, we are not yet at the point where you can make a complicated sci-fi thriller where Stand Alone Complex isn’t the first thing that is recommended. Ghost in the Shell is darker and grittier in its mood, but Vivy matches that with its stories. They both take place in a world where humanity both is and isn’t better off with their advanced technology.

ergo proxy anime

Ergo Proxy

After the explosion of the methane hydrate layer, humanity was forced into a select few domed cities where society is strictly controlled. To assist humanity, autonomous robots called AutoReivs were spread throughout the cities. Enter Re-L Mayer, granddaughter of the regent, and charged with investigating a series of cases in which the AutoReivs have gone haywire. In her investigation she comes in contact with a mysterious monster called Proxy. After meeting a man called Vincent Law that was blamed for several of the incidents, the pair strike out across the wasteland to unravel the mysteries of the Cogito Virus.

While Vivy is trying to stop a dystopian future, Ergo Proxy is already there. Both series, in their own ways, handle a mystery surrounding technology going haywire and gaining a sort of sentience. Furthermore, they tackle interesting philosophical topics about AI and humanoid technologies.

dimension w anime

Dimension W

In the future, humans have discovered the fourth dimension, or Dimension W, which is supposedly a source of infinite energy. Harnessing this energy in coils, the New Telsa Energy corporation has now set up a monopoly on its sale. Ex-soldier Kyouma Mabuchi is skeptical of this energy and still drives a gas-powered car for his job to hunt down illegal coils.

While Vivy is futuristic, it is relatively grounded in its plot around AI. Dimension W is a little more out there, but both follow a seemingly unrelated person getting pulled into a huge plot in their world. Dimension W shares Vivy’s occasional moments of random silliness as well.

For Fans of Emotionally Rich Stories

violet evergarden anime

Violet Evergarden

After the Great War and her time in it came to an end, Violet Evergarden is adrift. Her purpose was once only battle, and now she must find a new one. After recovering from the loss of her arms, Violet takes up a job at the CH Postal Services. Here she transcribes people’s thoughts into what should be emotional letters. However, the “emotional” part seems to greatly escape her, but she aims to learn how to move people with words.

Do you like the amalgamation of moments of eye-ruiningly beautiful animation and emotional short stories? Is the sci-fi setting of Vivy not particularly important to you? Violet Evergarden is a must in that case. Furthermore, one cannot looking into Vivy’s sparkling yet dead AI eyes and not think of Violet’s sparkling yet dead eyes.

time-of-eve-anime

Time of Eve

In future Japan, androids exist to serve humanity and must obey the Three Laws of Robotics. Humans are encouraged to treat androids much like they would any appliance. Rikuo Sakisaki was raised to accept this attitude, but one day when he finds an odd message in his housekeeper’s activity logs, it leads him to Eve no Jikan. This is a cafe for humans and androids and only has one rule – patrons must treat humans and androids as equals.

Both series explore the implications of humanoid technology coexisting with humanity. Time of Eve lacks any sort of action element to it, but it does share Vivy’s moments of thought-provoking dialogue.

beatless anime

Beatless

In this world, human-like hIE robots are treated like second class citizens to humans. One day, high schooler Arato Endou, who has always treated this robots as equals, is savagely beaten by one only to be saved by another abnormal hIE. In exchange for saving him, she asked that he register as her owner, thus taking responsibility for her actions.

While Vivy has a much deeper plot, both series are thriller series with plots surrounding humanoid technologies. Of course, Beatless has that added romance element.

For Fans of Attempting to Change the Future

rin-daughters-of-mnemosyne-anime

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne

For Rin Asogi, things like getting stabbed are just an inconvenience, not a death sentence. Rin has eaten the time fruit from the world tree, rendering her immortal. While she has lived long, she suddenly learns of someone that is hunting down other immortals like herself.

Rin isn’t especially sci-fi, but it does do something that Vivy immediately reminds me of – it shows the passage of time. Rin follows immortals and you get to see them at various points in time over their very long life. It is the same with Vivy as her story takes place in increments over 100 years.

Erased anime

Erased

Recently, the detached, struggling manga artist Satoru Fujinuma finds himself going back in time to just minutes before tragedy strikes around him. He has saved many lives with this power of “Revival,” but when he is wrongly accused of murdering someone close to him, Fujinuma finds himself sent back to his childhood. As he discovers, the recent death in his life is somehow connected the kidnap-murder of three children in the area that is about to happen. This time, he may be able to use his power to save more than just one life, easing his past regrets in the process.

While Vivy has an element of time travel, Erased is more your standard time travel plot. Both series have characters regularly remembering points where history can diverge, and doing their best to alter them. They both also have characters that really draw you in as well.

anime series like steins gate

Steins;Gate

In a rickety old building in Akihabara, mad scientist Rintarou Okabe and his lab assistants work on so-called future gadgets. However, their most successful contraption to date, the Phone Microwave, a machine that can turn bananas into gel, also has the added function of sending emails into the past, thus altering the flow of history.

While sci-fi as well, Steins;Gate is more your standard time travel show done really well. It has the usual plot of going back in time to fix something, then trying to fix the compounding mistakes that somehow caused. Vivy is like that too in a way, but more so it is about reacting to events as they come at her in a linear fashion.
