Anime is fond of its fantasy settings, but it is not always so fond of its fantasy races. They really are somewhat underutilized in anime, but if you have a fondness for creatures, you can find them if you look hard enough. If you are looking for a little diversity in your fantasy anime, here are some anime recommendations that make good use of other races.
Best Anime With a Variety of Fantasy Races
Rage of Bahamut
While Rage of Bahamut: Genesis is definitely more human-centric, the second series – Virgin Soul – further explores the complex world and shows off the larger variety of races that actually inhabit it. In a world where gods and demons are abound and there exists a dragon that can destroy the world, you expect more than just puny humans.
Re:Zero
Re:Zero keeps things pretty traditional with its characters, at least it main cast. However, in the world you see more than just human characters. You actually see quite a bit of diversity in those large sweeping crowd scenes. Unfortunately, you really only get to interact with it through side characters.
Overlord
Based on a game world, Overlord needs a number of creatures. While humanity seems to be a predominant race, you get to see a few others over the course of the series, but for the most part, they look pretty human as well. It is the small differences that set them apart physically, but they can be overwhelming in their differences in power.
That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime
With all the isekai series out there, so many of them don’t take advantage of their setting when it comes to races. However, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime takes full advantage. As it doesn’t follow the same traditional story, it actually sets itself up to introduce a lot of creatures that are usually put as the villains or fodder rather than actual characters.
Monster Musume
This series focuses on the unseen. A bunch of different races exist, but you only see one or two examples of each as they are added to the harem that makes up this series. It makes mythical creatures sexy and well-endowed.
Outbreak Company
The world of Outbreak Company is all fantasy creatures. The whole plot of the show is to teach them about otaku culture. Unfortunately, as a moe show, they are all fairly cute and this means they are also very humanized.
Interspecies Reviewers
You will see a lot of different races in Interspecies Reviewers. In this show, though, they ask the real questions – which are the sexiest? Yes, it is a very ecchi show about two guys reviewing the prostitutes in fantasy brothels. It is very nearly hentai, but diverse.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
What is most interesting about this isekai series is that humans appear to be the dominant race at a glance. However, it is then explained that the kingdom they were summoned to is just super racist. As the series expands, you get to see a lot more fantasy races that were shunned from the initial kingdom.
Seven Deadly Sins
There are actually quite a few different races in Seven Deadly Sins, but the issue is they mostly look like humans. Giants are just big humans. Fairies are floaty human jerks. Goddesses just get shiny sometimes. Demons get blacky sometimes. They all look like humans, but all have their own different quirks that make them separate.
Somali and the Forest Guardian
This one is special. In it, humans are the rarity. In fact, you really only get to see a small handful. The rest of the world is inhabited now by all manner of different creatures who have over taken it. It is a wholesome little series set in a very intriguing world.
