It’s a simple concept: bro + romance = bromance. However, it’s not the same yaoi romance that some of you may be into, this one is purely fueled on equal parts testosterone and friendship. So while they may get together in your dubious fan fiction, in the canon world, the following brothers-in-arm make for the ultimate team.
Best Anime Bromances
The Guys from Cell 2-6 from Rainbow
Who says a bromance has to be between two people? In Rainbro, I mean, Rainbow, the bromance occurs between the seven cellmates in Cell 2-6. Because, after all, nothing brings bros together like torture and sodomy in a prison setting, right?
Soul and Black Star from Soul Eater
There is a small portion of the Soul Eater anime fully dedicated to showing you just how big of a bromance that Soul and Black Star have together. It makes you wonder why, if they get along so well, that they aren’t weapon and meister partners to begin with. As it turns out, it is better to have someone that clashes your personality for a stronger soul length than one that compliments it, which exactly what their other respective partners do.
Gutts and Griffith from Berserk
Gutts is ridiculously strong and Griffith is clever and tactical-minded, it is no wonder why the Band of the Hawk rose to acclaim so fast once Gutts was recruited into the mercenary band. Unfortunately, Griffith’s ambition knows no bounds and Gutts eventually realizes he wants to find his own path in the world instead of being a stepping stone. This bromance is fun to watch while it happens, but it doesn’t end well.
Kyoya and Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club
This isn’t a brains and brawn operation, the bromance between these two is more like a brains and charm sort of thing. Together these two used their best traits to bring together a group of beautiful, but questionably tempered boys into a host club that shook Ouran Academy and brought happiness to many. Although each used the host club for own means, this is bromance that can withstand the ages.
Natsu and Gray from Fairy Tail
Although polar opposites in terms of elements, Natsu the fire mage and Gray the ice mage could not be more similar in attitude. Perhaps that, and not their elemental affinities, is why they tend to clash so much.
Roy Mustang and Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist
Although Fullmetal Alchemist tells the literal bromance between two brothers, the one between Hughes and Mustang is a much stronger one. After meeting in military training, one would think that the energetic Hughes wouldn’t mix well with the gloomy Roy, but their two different personalities help build a friendship stronger than steel and explored frequently in the series.
Kotetsu and Barnaby from Tiger and Bunny
Initially Kotetsu and Barnaby are forced into a partnership, and like these stories go, because of their personalities, they are less than successful. While Barnaby is concerned about ratings only, Kotetsu is all about helping the people, and that causes them to clash. However, once they warm up to each other and learn to appreciate their differences, they make a powerful team.
Joseph Joestar and Caesar Zeppeli from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Like every good bromance, Caesar and Joe begin as bitter enemies, so much so that they engage in a Ripple duel in Rome. However, after Joe saves Caesar’s life, they slowly build a respect for one another. That respect and friendship grows after training with LiSA and culminates when Caesar returns the life debt to Joe while climbing a tower covered in oil.
Yusuke and Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho
In this bromance, Yusuke and Kuwabara start off as rival thugs, but only after Yusuke’s death does he begin to realize how much he will miss his rival. However, when Kuwabara begins to manifest spiritual powers, he finds himself able to talk to Yusuke in his ghost form. As their rivalry turns into friendship throughout the show, these two thugs build a respect for each other, with Kuwabara even willing to put his life on the line to save Yusuke as well as to spurn on his incredible power.
Simon and Kamina from Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann
The bromance between Simon and Kamina started as and developed into something more like brotherhood. Simon was a timid child and the bold and brash Kamina became like a big brother to him in their underground village. Although others didn’t have the faith in Simon when Kamina was not around, Kamina himself never gave up and always tried to spurn Simon into believing in himself. Just who the hell do you think they are, anyway?
Goku and Krillin from the Dragon Ball Series
There is beer and pizza, peanut butter and jam, and then there is Goku and Krillin. Oh, sure, the bromance between Goku and Vegeta is interesting, and the focus of most of the series after the Namek arc, but Krillin? He’s always there. He’s there to get owned trying to help, he’s there to throw out a bad joke, and he’s there to carry out the lewd legacy of Kame House without being some super strong space alien. Yet even when the pair, or rather just Krillin, are old and grey in non-canon GT, they are still best friends.

Yes. You missed Gon and Killua from Hunter x Hunter. If those two aren’t an example of pure bromance I sure as hell don’t know what is.
