18 Romance Anime That Add Sex Into The Equation (But Aren’t Hentai)

Even if you are not some sort of degenerate who craves the content, there is no denying that adding sex to a romance anime adds a different element to a romantic relationship.

Once things progress to that level of physical intimacy, there is no going back and it often makes intense feelings even more complicated.

Whether you are just looking for cheap thrills or want a more complex romance in your anime, here are some romance anime recommendations that actually have sexual relationships in them.

Best Romance Anime With Sex

domestic girlfriend triangle

Domestic Girlfriend

This series wedges in sex right from the first episode when the main character sleeps with a girl from a group date in hopes to forget the unrequited feelings he has for his teacher. The complication being that both this girl and his teacher are sisters, and also his new stepsisters after their parents marry suddenly.

Domestic Girlfriend has its plot built upon relationship drama as the younger sister develops feelings for him and the older sister, his teacher, stops fighting her feelings for him.

scums wish anime

Scum’s Wish

Much like Domestic Girlfriend is a dumpster fire of drama you simply can’t look away from, Scum’s Wish is a drama filled with the worst people. They are interesting characters, don’t get me wrong, but no one in the series is a good person.

This series follows two school kids that date and sleep with each other simply because they can’t be with who they really love. The girl is in love with her childhood friend-turned-teacher, who rejects her due to their age and student-teacher relationship while the boy is in love with his old tutor who is also the music teacher at school. This old tutor doesn’t necessarily reject him, but rather greatly enjoys toying with all men who are enamored with her and serves as the antagonist of the series.

Scum’s Wish places a huge emphasis on physical relationships and their effect on emotions. While they are not hentai-levels of graphic, the scenes are frequent.

Sora and Haruka from Sky of Connection

Sky of Connection

As a series adapted from a visual novel, Sky of Connection decides to explore the stories of each girl as seen through the main character.

As is typical with some romance visual novels, those stories are often punctuated with sex to serve as tidy little bookends to their relationship. As such, you will watch the main character sleep with many girls in this series, including his sister.

nana anime

Nana

Nana follows the lives and loves of two vastly different girls named Nana that end up living together. While one is more focused on her career as a musician and the Sid Vicious and Nancy-type love affair she has going on with another musician, the other Nana is the type that constantly falls in love.

One of the best things about Nana is that it sugar coats absolutely nothing about its story. Sometimes its characters end up in bad situations and relationships, and then shows you how they grow from that. Regardless, the series follows two young adult women living in Tokyo, and their relationships don’t take long to grow into sexual relationships.

Miyamura and Hori from Horimiya laying down

Horimiya

Unlike some other series, the sex in Horimiya isn’t explicit and the implication happens in a “so fast you might blink and miss it” sort of way. However, it is incorporated as an element in their relationship as it deepens.

Also, unlike many of the other series here, Horimiya is about a pretty wholesome and happy relationship where sex is just the natural next step rather than being used as something to deepen later drama.

rumbling hearts anime

Rumbling Hearts

This particular series is the soap opera of romance anime. And I’m not saying that as a negative thing, more so that you know what to expect when watching it. It throws many of those same over-the-top tropes from your standard soap opera into the series to create a drama. Sometimes it is silly, and sometimes it is quite gripping.

Of course, part of what causes the drama is that the various relationships all turn physical at one point or another, and once you add sex in, feelings become a little more intense and harder to move past.

paradise kiss anime

Paradise Kiss

Made by the same author as Nana, Paradise Kiss shares Nana’s passion for not sugarcoating relationships. While this fashion-oriented series explores the many worries that the main character on the cusp of adulthood possesses, it also develops a fairly interesting relationship.

She become physical with a young fashion designer who is bisexual and completely open with the fact that he could never just love her alone. Of course, his type of charm is a kind of web that is hard to crawl out of.

Much like Nana, you can’t expect relationships in Paradise Kiss to be wholesome or happy.

school days anime

School Days

School Days is an anime series that exists in infamy. However, it still remains a romance, even if it becomes an extreme spoof of romantic drama by the end. The series follows a boy who falls in love with a girl at first sight. He asks his female friend to help him get to know her, which works. Unfortunately, she also falls in love with him too.

Essentially what happens is that he gets a taste of sex from one of these girls, then decides he wants to do it all the time and develops many partners for it. This leads to a deserved and violent end for him, and that’s the part that makes this such an infamous series.

School Days isn’t the series for people who want satisfying romance, but it is a romance series that wields sex in an interesting way.

clannad anime

Clannad

While the first season of Clannad is drama, high school shenanigans, and courting, the second season does something most romance anime dares not to do – let’s the main couple graduate and get married.

You then explore their married life which eventually includes a child. However, the scene about making said child is sweet but isn’t explicit.

white album 2 anime

White Album 2

This series follows the complicated relationships that the main character develops in his final year of school through music. While White Album 2 is a pretty touching romance, it is one rife with relationship drama and a manageable love polygon. It means that you aren’t escaping this series without someone’s feelings being hurt.

Despite the name, watching the original White Album is not necessary to start this series. That series is widely unrelated to White Album 2 except through the music. It’s also a harem show whereas White Album 2 is not.

we were there anime

We Were There

If you happen to be a big fan of shoujo high school romance series that heap fistfuls of melodrama and angst in, as many shoujo romances used to be, We Were There is one in rare form.

If you are a big romance fan, you will be able to play spot the tropes in this one, and once they add in sex to the equation, the jealousy, possessiveness, and drama become even more intense.

ef a tale of memories anime

Ef – A Tale of Memories

If you are a fan of melodrama, Ef is a legend at it. It juggles the relationships of a handful of characters, all of them with some sort of problem that is interfering with their life or relationship with another character.

As you explore those relationships, they do start to manifest into a physical element by the end. It is sort of used as a culmination of certain relationships, however.

tsukihime anime

Lunar Legend Tsukihime

While any fan of the Type-Moon visual novel that this is adapted from will tell you that this anime is a poor imitation, the truth is it does a fine job – especially if you have never played the visual novel!

While Tsukihime has hints of the multi-route path that the visual novel has, like Fate/Stay, it only follows one romance at a time. Furthermore, in true visual novel form, it takes that romance all the way to bedroom in an interesting end to what is a pretty okay horror romance anime.

koi kaze anime

Koi Kaze

Why is it a disproportionate amount of incest anime is okay with sex scenes compared to regular romance? Well, if that didn’t give it away, Koi Kaze is a romance series about a man who happens to meet a girl, develop feelings, and then discover that she is his estranged biological sister.

While incest is an immediate “no” for some, and fair enough, Koi Kaze does handle the topic more maturely and realistically than any other anime series in the genre.

his and her circumstances anime

His and Her Circumstances

As the male main character has a bit of a dark streak underneath his perfect exterior, His and Her Circumstances does have a bit of drama to it, but it remains one of the more positive and happy romance anime series on this list.

Much like Horimiya, with whom it shares a similar set up of two people who act differently at school than they do privately getting together, His and Her Circumstances also uses sex as the “next step” in the character’s long-lasting relationship.

amagami ss anime

Amagami SS

Amagami SS is an omnibus-style romance anime which takes a different approach to some other visual novel / dating sim game adaptations. Instead of choosing a main girl out of the harem of date-able girls for the anime plot to follow, the omnibus anime adaptations are instead comprised of several mini-arcs, each girl’s relationship with the main character followed to the conclusion before resetting the story.

Not all of the arcs in Amagami SS end with sex. The ones that do all end in a vague a “they probably did, but maybe they didn’t” way, with situations like being naked together in a hot spring or alone with a towel-clad girl in a hotel room before smooching and fading to black before checking in with the couple ten years later.

Rit and Red from the Banished from the hero's party anime walking down the street

Banished From The Hero’s Party, I Decided To Live A Quiet Life In The Countryside

Usually, fantasy romance lives and dies in the realm of fairy tales where they kiss and they never acknowledge that people do lewder things beyond that. However, Banished From The Hero’s Party, I Decided To Live A Quiet Life In The Countryside breaks the mold by giving romance fans everything they wanted.

This series is a more slice of life romantic adventure where a guy gets kicked out of his sister, the hero’s, party by a jealous party member, so he goes to start an apothecary in the country. There, an old adventuring companion moves in with him and a romance develops soon after.

Their relationship deepens pretty quick, but it uses them in the bedroom as a nice ending for the first season. Although, it is done in a tasteful “take off clothes and fade into the next scene” sort of way.

rec anime

Rec

You would hope that romances between adults would be more casual with adding in sexual relationships. However, it seems having romances between adults that still act like high schoolers is more common.

Rec is the rare beast to tell a romance between an adult couple that meet by happenstance and form a relationship that gets physical. It is as refreshing a progression as Rec is a grounded romance.

  1. Ok quick question dang I might be stupid for asking this but I was curious about the anime pic above the title it might have nothing to do with the rest but I was wondering, do you know the name?

    1. The picture is from Future Diary.
Which is an anime with romance (where they do have sex), but not really a “romance anime” since it is about people killing each other to become god.
The picture captured the sort of allure I was going for though, you know?
