code geass season 3

How to Watch Code Geass in Order

With a new season of Code Geass – or a new something, anyway – I feel it prudent to finally introduce a watch order for Code Geass. That and someone requested one. If you don’t care about the movies or OVAs of the series, and merely just care about the core story of the anime, the watch order is stupidly simple. However, with the advent of whatever Z of the Recapture is, it may make the series more difficult to get into for new fans. So I aim to arm them with proper knowledge.

Code Geass Watch Order

Chronological Code Geass Watch Order

The chronological Code Geass watch order is the full and complete watch order if you want to watch everything as it takes place in the series. It is complete with spin-offs, OVAs, and movies.

As Code Geass is an empire-crumbling and rebuild war story rebellion, it actually does merit watching in chronological order so you aren’t missing potentially important pieces of the overall story.

  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV Anime)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Special – Black Rebellion
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 1 – The Wyvern Arrives (OVA, Optional)
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 2 – The Wyvern Divided (OVA, Optional)
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 3 – The Brightness Falls (OVA, Optional)
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 4 – Memories of Hatred (OVA, Optional)
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 5 – To Beloved Ones (OVA, Optional)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV Anime)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 Special – Zero Requiem
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Kiseki no Birthday (TV Anime)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Nunnally in Wonderland (TV Anime)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Miraculous Anniversary (TV Anime)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Movie 1 – Initiation (Movie, Recap)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Movie 2 – Transgression (Movie, Recap)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Movie 3 – Glorification (Movie, Recap)
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection Movie (Movie)
  • Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture (TV Anime)

The specials above are definitely worth watch, the labeled OVAs on the other hand are less so. As for the movies and spin-offs, continue on below.

What is Akito the Exiled?

Akito the Exiled is a spin-off series of OVAs, though some sites label them as movies. Essentially, Akito the Exiled takes place in Europe in between Season 1 and Season 2 of the anime.

Akito the Exiled is fully optional to watch and doesn’t add anything to Lelouch’s story, though Akito does make a brief debut in it. Essentially, if you enjoy the world of Code Geass, it adds more flavor to that.

Do The Movies Add to the Story?

The Initiation, Transgression, and Glorification movies are mostly recap movies. However, over the course of those three movies, it makes small changes to the plot that all come to a head in the Re;surrection movie.

As such, Re;surrection is not truly a sequel movie to the TV anime series for Code Geass, but is a sequel movie to the events that are presented in the Code Geass movie trilogy.

In essence, they are done with the TV anime. It ended in R2 and both Re;surrection and Roze of the Recapture are working based on the events as they happened in the movies.

What is Roze the Recapture?

Roze the Recapture is spin-off TV anime that is a sequel to the events of the Re;surresction movie.

It takes place five years after the events of the Re;surrection movie and follows new characters in their own little rebellion story against a new-ish empire of invaders.

You definitely want to watch the movies prior to watching Roze of the Recapture since it works off those events. However, knowing the world of Code Geass from the TV anime alone is fine too.
