Dusk Maiden of Amnesia sits at the pinnacle of romance anime about ghosts. It provides the exact kind of experience that you would be looking for in a romance between a human and ghost – one that weebles back and forth between quite wholesome and somewhat sinister.
The series follows a ghost who has haunted the school for 60 years. One day, she ends up finding that she can interact with some students and encourages them to start a paranormal investigation club to look into her death.
While her actual murder is solved surprisingly quickly, this leaves the rest of the series open for the blooming romance between the human main character and the female ghost who becomes increasingly more possessive of him.
Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs
As a harem anime, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs probably isn’t what you were looking for as a singular romance anime, but the ghost is the “main girl” of this harem.
Yunna and the Haunted Hot Springs follows a teenage psychic who, in return for cheap rent, hopes to quickly remove a ghost haunting the hot springs inn. However, he discovers that the ghost is a cute and somewhat ditzy girl that didn’t pass on because there was still so much she wanted to do.
In the end, he end up helping her and the other quirky weirdos that live there with their issues as he continues to grow closer to this ghost girl.
Invaders of the Rokujyoma!?
Similar to Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, Invaders of the Rokujyoma is another supernatural harem anime where romance with a ghost plays a part. This time, it condenses things down even tighter by following a harem who all live in the same room.
Invaders of the Rokujyoma follows a guy who moves into a rented room because it was cheap. However, he discovers it was cheap to due to a number of (conveniently female) ghosts, deities, and other supernatural beings that all want to haunt that specific room.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous
Unlike the other series that are about a human and a ghost falling in love, Natsuyuki Rendezvous follows a more realistic ghost story – not being able to move on after death.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous follows a young man who falls in love with a recently windowed flower shop manager. He even goes so far as to work there to get closer to her, only to discover that her dead husband is still haunting her. From there, comedy ensues as he frequently gets his attempts at romance shut down by a ghost, but the series does provide a poignant romance about moving forward.
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
Anohana is yet another tale of humans who can’t move on from someone they loved. This time, it focuses less on romance, but knows how to jerk tears out with the best of them.
Anohana follows a friend group who suffered the tragic accidental death of a friend when they were children. As teenagers, they have drifted apart, and each is riddled with trauma from the childhood event. One boy who became a shut-in is suddenly haunted by that dead friend whose ghost wants them to fulfill a wish for her.
As this series is more about a group of friends reuniting and working out their issues, there is not true satisfying romance plot. However, the main character dealing with his long lingering romantic feelings for his dead friend does play a large role in his story.
