code geass season 3

How to Watch Code Geass in Order

With a new season of Code Geass – or a new something, anyway – I feel it prudent to finally introduce a watch order for Code Geass. That and someone requested one. If you don’t care about the movies or OVAs of the series, and merely just care about the core story of the anime, the watch order is stupidly simple. However, with the advent of whatever Z of the Recapture is, it may make the series more difficult to get into for new fans. So I aim to arm them with proper knowledge.

Code Geass Watch Order

Code Geass TV Anime-Only Watch Order

You remember how I said if you only watch the anime, the watch order is simple? That’s because the anime series-only watch order for Code Geass is:

  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
  • Code Geass: Lelouch fo the Rebellion R2

Very simple, but if you are looking for something more complete…

Chronological Code Geass Watch Order

The chronological Code Geass watch order is the full and complete watch order if you want to watch everything as it takes place in the series. It is complete with spin-offs, OVAs, and movies.

  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Special – Black Rebellion
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 1 – The Wyvern Arrives
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 2 – The Wyvern Divided
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 3 – The Brightness Falls
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 4 – Memories of Hatred
  • Code Geass: Akito the Exiled 5 – To Beloved Ones

  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Movie 2 – Transgression
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Movie 3 – Glorification
  • Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection Movie

The specials above are definitely worth watch, the labeled OVAs on the other hand are less so. As for the movies and spin-offs, continue on below.

What is Akito the Exiled?

Akito the Exiled is a spin-off series of OVAs, though some label them movies. Essentially, it takes place in Europe in between Season 1 and Season 2 of the anime. It is fully optional to watch and doesn’t add anything to Lelouch’s story, though he does make a brief debut in it. Essentially, if you enjoy the world of Code Geass, it adds more flavor to that.

Do The Movies Add to the Story?

The first three movies are essentially just a recap of the entire main series. Of course, scenes have been changed and remixed. Some events are slightly different, but overall the series remains the same. I personally recommend watching them if you watched the series years ago and want a refresher as well as some new treats.

As for Re;surrection, this is more so related to the movies than the series. It takes all the small changes in the movies and culminates them in this movie. It doesn’t add much to the series, but it adds a lot for those who watched the previous movies. In fact, it is this movie that makes the others worth watching as it’s alternative chain of events becomes rather interesting because of it.
